Constant pressure, getting layups and shooting 3's. I could get behind that!

Weekday FB games?

So does the MW move games to Th/Fri for TV? Discussion starting on my Board about this. I guess you control our away games (where Th/Fri would be ok with us), and I would assume the Pac-2 controls our home games - or do your teams have a say?).

WSU in general hates Th/Fr games. A significant portion of our fan base resides 280 miles away (Seattle area) and 75 miles away (Spokane, with a 2-lane highway connecting us, going through the biggest speedtrap 25MPH small town on the planet). Plus our quite popular RV lot takes up large student/staff parking lots right by the stadium. In the past the TV lords and Pac-12 office have controlled game times and dates. Will be interesting to see this develop. My opinion is that we will be getting a shit TV deal for home games anyway. I say F-that in favor of trying to cater to our battered actual fan base.

How about a shoutout to our UNLV hockey team?

They will be playing for an ACHA National Championship tomorrow at 6pm against Adrian College. They beat Missouri State, Pittsburgh, and tonight vs. University of Central Oklahoma to get there.

There'a a stream behind a pay wall on something called FloSports, but regardless, the boys play tough, smart, quick team-oriented hockey and I think that deserves a shoutout.

Pushing the ball

I was at the Gonzaga game last night. They push the ball after most defensive rebounds. Positives - 1. they got several uncontested layups due to confusion on the defensive end. 2. They got a number of 8 foot jumpers as they were slowed near the basket. 3. They got several totally uncontested three's as the defense was not organized. 4. They picked up a few fouls due to the defensive player put in a bad defensive position. Negatives - two turnovers.

IMO, with DTJ there is no reason for CKK not to get two/three players who can benefit from running. There are probably 10 assists just waiting there if we can pick up the pace at appropriate times.

At Reno last night

I really thought this would be the toughest game of the last 10, even moreso than SDSU. I hate picking UNLV to lose, unless it’s a UNLV at Michigan type of game (football). I typically pick the Rebs to win otherwise. Yesterday, I picked UNR.

My superstitions through the last month - don’t drink beer, stay off the net, hit a non-routine convenience store for little stuff I need. Check, check, check. Didn’t matter. Glad I didn’t drink, had a bad bleeder at work, all hands on deck, so I missed the game live and recorded it. So I’m glad I didn’t pop on the Net. Watched it really late (early) and slept a couple hours and here I am.

Was disappointed in the early focus/effort. Some guys looked like they were on a mental vacation. It’s tough to depend on a “big” that can go for 24 points and look dominant or he can be a no show with 4 points. But in all, just awful production from the bench and a couple of starters. You aren’t going to win on the road with two guys doing everything and nobody else chipping in. The recognition from post guys is still poor. They really do look like they’re trying to solve a quantum physics problem at times.

In the end, I don’t think the loss is the biggest of deals. Once we lost to Southern, LMU, and the disaster in Florida, at least for me, realizing we once again blew a shot at any at large chances - the new adjusted goal was finish in the top 5 of conference to avoid that dreadful first day. Yeah, that’s moving goalposts a ton, making it an 80 yard field instead of a 120 yard field, but I guess you have to adjust expectations as things are exposed, for the better or the worst. But they showed some fight, against UNR last night and when they were on the outside looking in for a top 5 MWCT seed. No, I’m not celebrating it as some great achievement, but it’s better than season over before the Super Bowl.

I do think we will rock the hell out of SDSU …

3 team tiebreaker

What happens if there is a 3 team tiebreaker between

UNLV
Boise State
San Diego State

I know the tie break is head record between everyone but there is an uneven schedule with UNLV not playing Boise State twice. Does that matter?

If it doesn’t, it looks like UNLV is locked into that 3 seed for the most part in the MWC.

UNLV men picked to finish in the middle of Mountain West pack

I am expecting a top 4 finish or am I way off base?

UNLV’s men’s basketball team was picked to finish sixth in the annual preseason Mountain West poll released Thursday, a standing that would be unlikely to result in selection into the NCAA Tournament.

Finishing first per the conference’s coaches and media members is 2022-23 national runner-up San Diego State. The Aztecs received 25 of a possible 31 first-place votes to top Boise State (four first-place votes), New Mexico (one) and UNR (one). Colorado State is wedged between the Wolfpack and the Rebels, who finished 19-13 last season and seventh in the Mountain West with a 7-11 mark.

UNLV freshman point guard Dedan Thomas Jr. was honored as the preseason Freshman of the Year. The Las Vegas native and Liberty alum is expected to start for the Rebels this season.
