Petrino can coach but is a complete POS

Walked out on the Falcons leaving a note in the locker room for the team

Lying about the motorcycle incident with his staffer.
Odom can build his own coach reclamation program like Saban has done, only out West. If coaches can coach it up and keep their noses clean in Las Vegas, they're ready for the rest of the world. I mean, honestly, until we go P5 we'll always be a stepping stone anyway. May as well bring in talented, if not troubled, guys.

I thought similarly to that in 2020 when he got the Missouri State job. I am not an MSU fan being a Mizzou guy, but I am from the Springfield area so I followed them closely. I can't speak to his time at Louisville or Arkansas or even with the Falcons, but in Springfield he's been good with the media (which is a big change) and has not had any controversy whatsoever. Still not sure if I am a fan of Bobby Petrino as a man, but I think it is undeniable he is one of the best offensive minds in the nation.

Here is a Chris Low article from a few months ago prior to the Missouri State game at Arkansas:

Here is a recent article gives a nice rundown of Petrino and the shit he has pulled over the years.

I think Petrino has a ton of baggage and some really negative optics. But I think, as pointed out in your cited opinion piece, a lot of those issues will be exacerbated working with Jimbo Fisher who is his own piece of work.
It's a hire with some risk, but it's also a hire that says 'hey, I recruited and coached Lamar Jackson, I put together top 10 programs in the Big East, SEC, and ACC as a head coach. My offenses were consistently in the top 30 nationally. He's getting to the age where if he wants one more P5 job he needs to show he can keep his nose clean and work well within a staff.

Is he a scumbag? I think most likely. I find it amusing that we're the same fan base who will scream for Pitino despite his baggage and start clutching our pearls with Petrino.

Just heard this news on ESPN radio and couldn’t believe it, absolutely huge hire. I agree with BC Bobby woulda been a great hire for HC so to get him as OC at lil ol’ UNLV is mind blowing to me.

This has the potential to have us be good and be good immediately, I’m pumped about this move.

I will say if you're reading CFB subreddit or paying attention to twitter there's more than a few people that are blasting the hire...but there's still lots of Arkansas guys blasting the Odom hire. A&M and Arkansas fans praising the lord for not having them around anymore.

I don't really care what they say, I think this is a program that needs to gamble a bit to break decades long tradition of being terrible at football.

Not to mention we are not in the same stratosphere as SEC schools. We are not shopping in the same stores as those schools. If I were part of their fans bases I wouldn't want Petrino either and could afford to be very picky. But for UNLV this is hitting the jackpot.

For any UNLV fan to be out on Petrino because SEC schools are is delusional.

90% of Arkansans still believes he walks on water. He is one hell of a football coach. When he arrived here at Arkansas after the Atlanta Falcons fiasco, none of the baggage mattered anymore when we started winning and winning big. That was until the affair with the under qualified staffer Jessica Dorrell he had hired and the “motorcycle crash”. But that’s been over 11 years ago. FWIW, when he came back to Fayetteville this year he was very apologetic and showed a lot of emotion for how it all ended here. Things change and people change. Once he comes out the gate swinging with that wheel route for a touchdown and you guys start winning I bet/hope you all will feel the same way.

"Petrino's time in Springfield will be remembered for his first two seasons in which he led the Bears to a pair of postseason appearances. The Bears hadn't been to the postseason since 1990, and Petrino somehow took a 1-10 team in 2019 and turned it into a winner within one COVID-19-impacted offseason."

But I thought COVID year doesn't count?

I remember seeing Petrino on the sidelines at Arkansaw and his persona was dripping with intelligence. This past season he was the head coach that lost games to SDSU, USD, NDSU.and UND. He's lucky he still has his hair.

Petrino as OC and Shibest are excellent hires. Quite a coup to get coaches on that level to come here. Alexander is a bit of a mixed bag, but at a school at our level is a good hire. He coached Ervin Johnson during his first stint at UNLV who was pretty good. Will be interesting to see if he keeps any of the previous staff. He let several go, it appears, but not everyone.

I am sure that Petrino in particular will attract some notable players that wouldn’t otherwise consider UNLV. Impressive staff so far.

There is also another connection here. Del was at Notre Dame and Georgia Tech with Chip Long, who started out as a GA at Louisville and Arkansas under Bobby MF Petrino.
It's kind of funny. ALL these guys are connected in some way when you look deep enough. Like a West Virginia village - everybody is related in some way or another.

Can he coach though? About as good of an OC UNLV could even wish for? Baggage… yes, but if UNLV is going to get out of the depths of CFB they need to get in the mud. He’s not the HC so I am perfectly okay with him coming in as one of the best offensive minded coaches out there.

Sources tell FootballScoop the following coaches have been let go, as Barry Odom brings his new staff in: Jonathan Krause (WRs), TJ Woods (Co-OC / OL), Nick Holz (QB / Co-OC), Scott Baumgarther (RBs / STC), Bojay Filimoeatu (DL), Michael Bruno (ILBs), Keith Heyward (DC).

Love the staff he’s putting together so far. I trust Coach Odom with D but I really wanted to see a good OC. Petrino running the offense is a great hire. Hopefully some of the position coaches are going to be west coast guys. We got the Midwest/Southeast covered. Need a couple good CA recruiters.
