Available candidates (non UNLV staff)

Yeah I don’t think I like where this is going. If not Harsin, then it’s sounding more like a Rolovich type hire.

You go all in on Mullen. Unlikely as it may be you kick the tires until he says he's going to call the cops.

After that. In no particular order.

Neal Brown (Really liked what he did at Troy. Recruited in Big12 may be familiar with a lot of portal guys that will pop up)

Jeff Monken

Rich Rodriguez

Tyson Helton (last resort type)

Nick Rolovich (last resort type)

Jason Candle (Last resort type not because of ability but questions about staff and only ever really being at Toledo)

Monken makes as much as silverfield and has run a triple option since 1997. Richrod is gonna be in blue and gold. Pretty much agree on everything else.

I wouldn't assume Monken is married to that offense completely. Ken N ran a similar offense at Navy for years and had no problem going polar opposite. I'm sure Monken might bring elements of it but I'm sure he would bring in an OC that would bring more of an RPO/Read option look. Monken ran that offense out of necessity. Academies just cant recruit the type of QBs or athletes that can run much else. Trust me I have concerns about Monken but it's more in the recruiting/portal/NIL areas vs any Xs and Os.

With Army's inability to recruit, they can't really dip into the portal Monken may feel he's hit the pinnacle of what he can achieve there

You're right UNLV would have to open the check book a bit.

Honestly i don’t even know if that’s true about the triple option, I read it on wvu board. Apparently he was their second choice after kotelnicky but couldn’t get a oc. I love the idea of a tough coach who’s disciplined so im not out on monken. And really I’d rather win with a triple option than be .500 with Rolovich

Thoughts on Pat Shurmur? Colorado OC. Was a former NFL head coach with Browns and Giants. Didn’t have a good record, but also didn’t have a good QB to work with either.

No.

There’s a video of him as the Denver Broncos OC saying they were practicing incompletions, and no it’s not a joke, it was a serious answer. Needless to say it didn’t work out very long.

If you hated Marion as OC you will absolutely detest Shurmur here!
We ain’t got a Sheduer Sanders here to hide his crappy play calling, trust me there was reason why he only had the CU OC job as an option.

You guys would not like Pat and his “Marion-like” play calling!

UNLV needs to keep all the new boosters on board and be able to excite this town if they want any chance to continue to develop fan support and have any chance for the Big12. Swing for the fences! Just like in the film Signs
Home Run Baseball GIF by Reconnecting Roots
"Swing Away"!
They have to get this search right if they want any chance to get into the big12

Cal officially announced Harsin as OC, that probably finalizes it. I don’t see a Petrino situation occurring since Harsin is BFFs with the Cal HC.
If he’s offered a HC job, I don’t see how that doesn’t change. But you’d figure he would have stalled a bit with Cal OC spot if he was in serious talks with UNLV

Being conpletely out of FB for a year or so he may want to get his feet again before jumping back in.

It's also quite possible he had zero interest in the UNLV job for any number of reasons.

Or maybe Harper had no interest in him. (You would think there would be, but you never know).

Harp doesn’t have a lot of time to get a coach in place. Two days (yesterday and today) is plenty of time to have enough discussions to determine if a deal can get done so it wouldn’t surprise me if there were talks and it didn’t work out for whatever reason. Gotta work down the list until you reach a deal. Hopefully Harp doesn’t have to get too far down his list.

If he is talking to UNLV, he would still go ahead just in the case a deal couldn't be made. If he leaves Cal for UNLV, then there would be no penalty since assistant coaches have no contract guarantee if a coach leaves.

From what Harper said, they can use the money that was offered to Odom to get a new coach, so they are offering funding that is similar to the Big 12 with the one big fact that there is no income tax in Nevada.

I think a decision will be made by Friday.

And we will all be relatively happy.

Or

Possibly at each other's throats arguing why it was a good or bad hire.

But probably happy.

But possibly at each other throats.

But probably happy.

Maybe.

🙂

As someone who knows absolutely nothing about most of the names being tossed around…

UNLV has started to gain traction with the casual fan… continuing that momentum is key… the names mentioned don’t necessarily mean anything to the casual fan. The only thing that matters to them is “what have they done, where have they been, and how much are we paying them?”

Those are the criteria that any hire will initially be judged on. The hire HAS to make the casual fan FEEL like we could still be good.

I’d argue that it might be as important as anything to retain Marion along with a new coach. Unless that coach brings a high powered offensive philosophy of his own, then you try to retain Scherer…?

There was obviously a good amount of buzz with the Go-Go, in spite of the red zone issues, and the D was pretty damn good.

My point would only be that MAYBE there’s value in maintaining some continuity, if that’s even possible.

For the love of GOD we can not take a step back in terms of quality HC. We hire a OC or DC or some DIV II HC and it going to be a gut punch. Get somone on quality not potential !

So you thinking Kevin Sumlin? Maybe Lovie Smith?

Given Harp’s comments about previous HC experience, has Al Golden’s name been mentioned? Previous HC at Miami etc. Now DC at Notre Dame.

Wow!
There are 2 names I would have never thought to mention!
What do you think about these two?
Sumlin maybe. We all thought maybe he'd get a call last time around. Had a DUI last year at Maryland, but not sure how that would affect anything. He was successful at Houston, but its been a while. Idk if that would necessarily inspire the fan base, but then again there are few names that would at this point.
Lovie was a terrible college coach so no, I dont think hed be a good candidate. I get the appeal of guys who are NFL coaches, but no not in todays college game.. Outside maybe Pete because hes still been very connected to college and lets be real, he was basically running an NIL program at USC, lol.

I still would go hard after a guy like Mullen. You have to play big boy football right now and that would be a huge signal you plan to.
