This weekend and beyond

There are a lot of visits planned, some official, some unofficial but the new unofficial is much more serious than the old unofficial. Before it was just early interests, now they are business.

Last season, UNLV “lost” that big to UNM because of NLI deal. UNLV couldn’t budge much more, there just wasn’t enough. And it’s not like UNM pulverized UNLV’s deal. It was very doable but UNLV’s funding was on fumes.

It appears that is changing, a lot, in large part because of Lon. He’s working behind the scenes with his connections to get more and it can make a pretty big difference. Which is good, you take it wherever you can get it. Kevin helped cool Lon’s seat 15 years ago, now it’s time for Lon to do what he can to help cool Kevin’s seat.

We are, so far, in good positioning with players that would make a difference. However, it’s not over yet. There is concern that once UNLV puts their package together, you now have a going rate and schools in better position can come up with something higher. And UNLV, as of now, doesn’t have a ton of wiggle room though they feel what they’ve put together will be sufficient. But still, nothing is solid, people think it will happen but they realize it’s still potentially open.

There was a player several years ago that was offered x from a power school, very prominent school. UNLV offered the same, a significant amount, higher than any of these UNLV’s NLI’s right now. The family was shopping him around, they were going with the highest bidder. That same school that UNLV didn’t counter, they could have very easily offered more and secured the kid. They didn’t counter because although he was good and would be an addition for them, he wasn’t necessary, they were already loaded. UNLV had 40 minutes and a green light for him to do what he wanted on the court. So he chose UNLV for the same amount of money.

We might get lucky in the same regard with some players. But others may put together a better package and “steal” them late because UNLV won’t have alot left in the tank (as of now, it’s a fluid situation, trying to get more).

But it’s the best thing I’ve heard in a while. Regardless of who we get though, I’m still pretty convinced that whether they are great or mediocre, it’s going to come down to chemistry/unity.

OT: New Movie "Air"

Excellent movie. It is actually very funny. Great cast and acting too, directed and stars Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Tucker and Jason Bateman. Basically about Nike getting Michael Jordan to sign with them, but lots of cool 80s stuff in it. But the movie opens at Bishop Gorman which was funny. Matt Damon plays Sonny Vaccaro, I remember seeing him at a lot of the UNLV games back in the day. If memory serves he was a strong defender of Tark as well and all the stuff the NCAA did to him. Were we a Nike school at the time or was he at the games just trying to get some of our players once they entered the NBA?

Great start to 2024

Kahekili Paaoao is staying home! Great early pickup and he will be the defensive leader of this class. Was a silent commit for almost two weeks but took a trip to Arizona, silently committed there, and then flipped back today. Crazy turn of events.

Kela Moore from Hawaii also committed earlier in the week and he is already working on bringing some of his friends with him.

NIL ideas

Just saw this on Twitter, and it's a pretty good way to generate money for NIL payments. This particular one is a high end bourbon raffle. They're selling 3000 tickets at $50 a piece, which give you a chance to win some allocated bourbons. If they sell all of the tickets, they'll bring in $150,000 for NIL money. Obviously, the prizes aren't worth anywhere close to 150k, maybe 10-20k or so, so there's a lot of upside to doing this. Plus, the price is low enough for most people to get involved in, with a chance to win some good stuff.

What do you guys think? Is there anyone doing this sort of stuff at UNLV? Seems like a much better option that just selling shirts and sweatshirts with a players image on them.

Recruiting …

It’s taking some time getting used to the way all this works. We knew it was coming and we are in our second year of it … but wow, it really changed what a college coach is.

I can think back a couple dozen years …. Listening to a couple of assistants on the same staff talking about a kid they were watching live, discussing whether they should recruit him or not, how heavily, etc. He does this well, that well, can’t do this, won’t be able to do that …. He’s not that good now but he has a chance to be a starter in a couple years, he has the right mind and work ethic and has some tools ….

Evaluation isn’t something anymore. Diamonds in the rough have lessened with immediate info and tech.

The more I think about it, the more I wouldn’t recruit a high school kid. Or at least it should be a minority of recruiting, perhaps. Why waste your time on a decent high school kid (the best kids are going into an NLI we can’t afford) and work him a year or two, into your system, developing him … only to have Texas or Michigan lowball offer the kid 5x more than you can even afford?

I think many of the bigger schools will just flat out poach. Illegally, but it won’t matter, too hard to track communications, too many ways to communicate. The NCAA isn’t going to run sting operations to try and uncover these things, so they’ll happen. So if big schools focus on the top 100 HS guys with high NLI’s, that leaves mid tier guys for you … which they’ll end up pulling from you after you invest your time.

The new premium player is a freshman entering the portal, followed by a sophomore entering the portal. We need players with the penalty of having to sit out a full year if they choose transfer again. And there’s value in that, a year or two of D1 under the belts makes them game ready when you get them.

I keep playing over potential conversations and options and when you think about it, it’s mind boggling how these things can go. I know I don’t like it but that’s not going to change it.

The rich are going to get more rich. The middle class can get rich only through success. There won’t be many of those. SDSU is on the brink of that, imo, their options will open up. Those that don’t find success, I feel they are going to fall further behind and create a huge chasm between good teams and bad teams (I know there’s a lot of parity in college hoops but I think it’ll settle and separate).

With recruiting, I don’t recognize the game anymore. It’s so far from it was even 10 years ago.

I’ll maintain that regardless of who we sign, the number of stars, the previous season stats … they won’t be a good indicator of whether we will have a good team. That “on paper” will be flimsier than ever. It really is going to come down to how well the pieces fit together. I think the most successful teams in the game have a “same page”, single vision about them, they click on the court, little ball hogginess, smaller ego ….

And we won’t know that by looking at the stats or trying to size up the roster. We probably won’t know what we are dealing with until early December.

Jalen Hill has been contacted

Can finally comment on this because its public. Hill has been in the portal since 3/29 and was contacted right before the dead period. He will be on campus either this or next weekend. I'm not sure why it takes several days for names to appear publicly but all coaches are able to access the portal and see the names 24 hours after the paperwork is submitted and approved.
