My apologies to Bull

But I want to give props to Chittenden. A huge question mark and thought to be a weakness on our team coning into the season, but he has been solid. The first miss at Houston was bad and he missed that long one bad last night, but he has been better than expected.
He was a top 10 K recruit and I think he has a good future. I don't feel as comfy in FG situations kicking as the last 2 seasons yet, but I feel confident that he will make most of his kicks.

Theres no rule or written legislation that ties UNLV to Reno.

There is no written agreement or contract or declaration or any other document or form that says UNLV and Reno are joined at the hip in any conference talks.

Why the sudden talking point that were a package deal? Where did that come from? The realignment discussion has been ongoing for a decade and none of this came up. What is going on with our administration?

Pac-12 Rebuild Update...

Without UNLV, at least how Ross Dellenger reports it.

Washington State
Oregon State
Boise State
San Diego State
Fresno State
Colorado State

Maybe if we were UNLV State... or Las Vegas State.

Man. I would expect to be included in the next "round" but it's a gutting feeling to be "that far" from even a MWC+ version of the Pac 12.,..

Where we are at.

Quite frankly none of us know really.

All kinds of machinations going on behind the scenes.

Hard to make sense of any of it.

Possible scenarios of what we know and what we can only speculate.

We obviously know UNLV is currently not in the revamped PAC.

What we don't know is the why?

Were they not even considered? Seems very unlikely. Possible but pretty unlikely.

Did UNLV turn down an invite. Also Possible but highly unlikely unless...UNLV knows it's moving to the BIG12..Possible who knows.

Was UNLV not included in original announcement for monetary reasons? Possibly. Is PAC waiting to announce further expansion in an attempt to lessen potential exit fees?

I cannot imagine anyone at UNLV thinks remaining in the MWC is a viable option at this point. Because it isn't. Conference just lost two of its top football schools. SDSU is struggling now but was arguably best team in conference for a 3-4 year stretch not so long ago. You also lost your top basketball program and two others that have been solid.

AFA has to be considering a move to the AAC to join ARMY/NAVY at this point.

There really isn't much of a path for the MWC to reload even with an influx of exit fee money. There simply aren't any viable candidates to keep the conference viable. NMSU? Texas State? Rice? None bring enough to the table to lift the profile of conference. Not sure a new look MWC could broker a TV deal beter than what they currently have.

Purely a guess here..

Either UNLV will be announced later after they work out whatever hurdles there are.

Or

UNLV is in talks with Big12.

Otherwise Rebs are in huge trouble.

Anybody else have any thoughts on why things have played out the way they have so far? Or where they think this is going?

Haven’t seen much posted about this … maybe somebody knows?

I’m not talking about an assumption here.

Is having Nicco Fertitta as an assistant paying divdends? I mean, are the Fertitta’s taking special interest, are they backing heavily?

I’d assume so … but you gotta be careful about assumptions. Does anyone know for certain? Whether it’s NIL help, help with salaries, etc????

If they want to be our football T Boone’s, I’m all for it.

I mean, they got Sanchez the job and some rope … what about kin?

Fans aren't the problem

I saw a post earlier stating that the fans get too much blame. Which may be true. But if you look close, our fans have been below average that is for sure.

Las Vegas is the second best media market in the conference. Third if you want to count San Jose State. But they have such little market penetration and they are not a candidate for power conference expansion, that we will not include them.

Last year football finished first in the conference, made the MW championship for the first time ever, and made it to a bowl game with their best record since the 80's.

Our home attendance ranked 6th in the league last season.

Well we have been bad, and it took fans time to buy in. Sure. Well, there was excitement coming into this season. We go on the road and blowout a big 12 team. We get a ton of publicity, some votes in the polls, and became the favorite for the playoff spot in one game.

How do we follow that up with our home opener? One where we gave away 7200 tickets to students, 3/4 of those being freebies to anyone who wanted them ( not just students)

Fresno is coming off a loss, where the score was more lopsided than than game to what could be a heavily flawed Michigan team. Playing a nobody school.
SDSU was bad last year, bringing a new coach. Has not looked good so far this year. But Oregon State is a good draw
Wyoming, a tiny market, got trounced by ASU, a middle to bottom PAC 12 team in recent years, though they may end up being pretty good this year. Playing a FCS team.

Then you look at basketball last season. we finished 4th in the conference standings, but 7th in attendance. Again one of the biggest markets in the conference.

Truth is our fans kinda suck. A lot of competition in Vegas, but it is a big market and UNLV offers sports at a huge discount compared to other schools.

The old fans are spoiled and will only show up for big games against name opponents in both sports. Or they are just apathetic and don't care enough to go. We think we deserve better than what we have shown because what Tark 30+ years ago. We are too good for our conference, yet haven't ever won it in major sports in 20 years now. Spoiled or apathetic, still both suck.

If Tark didn't have that success, we would likely have better fan support now because expectations would be more realistic. I know, I know. Tark built this university, and he did. Truth is, who knows where we would be today without him. But it is logical to believe that we would be in the MW at this point, just due to the fact that we are one of 2 state schools and are in a big market. Just the local population in itself would lend itself to having us in the conference by now. When the MW added SJSU, they sucked in both sports then.

This is important because the football team, the investment and the results, are getting us into expansion conversations. But regardless of our market size, we need more butts in seats and eyeballs on TV games for them to seriously consider us. As of now, we are not a good candidate, because all of the local college sports fans are watching different teams. Adding UNLV will not move the needle and is a poor investment.

We need money, but fans don't want to pay for tickets. We expect local businesses and hotels to sponsor the school or contribute to NIL, but why should they if they no there isn't much local interest. It doesn't make financial sense, and hotels are corporate owned now.

Bottom line, now is the time to try to get as many people as you know to go to games and watch on TV. Hopefully both. At least if you care at all about UNLV sports, which is the point of these boards.

More interest means more money for the school to pay to keep coaches, or gasp, buy the basketball coach that many want. It also may get local business attention which can also lead to more revenue and better coaches and players.

UNLV has made some terrible, terrible decisions. This is true. But fan support has been well below recent results.

Is UNLV Top 25 team ? Not in the AP or Coaches poll but, what about USA Today

Rebels are in the Top 25 according to the Newest USA Today Rankings, # 23.

Some Interesting things related to realignment and the MWC / Pac2

I found this article interesting. Gives some insight into what Gloria Nevarez is thinking and other stuff regarding realignment. I like the part about giving the boot to schools that won't commit in terms of budget.

Kool Aid

I wouldn’t say there’s a lot of Kool Aid drinking otherwise the stands would be more full.

But among the people that follow them closely year in and year out, I do think there’s a lot of Kool Aid drinking early on.

We beat/dominated a decent team on the road and smacked around a horrible school. A lot to see still, they really haven’t proven much though. Eye test is pretty good in the early going.

But talks of expanded playoff, undefeated/1 loss … I think that’s over the top. It’s like the “we’re back” posts in hoops when we win at the Pit or win the 76 classic with a mediocre field.

If I start thinking that, it probably wouldn’t be until the first week of October.

That said, we aren’t often 2-0, and we rarely “look” this good to start the season. So there is reason for optimism.
