Other than still

Having difficulty finishing games, have to be happy with where they are. An easy one vs SJSU, then up against two teams just above you. Given where we were a month ago, actually having something to play for this late in the year is a very welcome change, win or lose down the stretch. It‘s been a long time since we could watch with some sort of hopes in March.

Certain players have awful games, but somebody else who you don’t expect seems to step it up and contribute and have a positive impact. That’s been for a few games during this winning stretch.

But it does seem we play a certain way and then get incredibly conservative to the point of blowing it. Almost how a prevent defense blows it. We have blown a few this year with that mindset but we’ve squeaked out a few lately.

This league is absolutely insane in the top 6 or 7 spots. There’s no greatness in the grouping but they’re all extremely tight and it’s going to make for a wild ass finish. I really think we are going to get SDSU at home this year.

I think the best thing is - hard to say this with as wild as it is - but UNLV certainly looks like they’ll finish top 5. Even if they drop SDSU and UNR … tiebreakers and such. And I think that is incredibly important, much moreso than an actual matchup if the goal is to actually win the MWCT as opposed to grabbing a freebie extra win in the first night‘s set of games.

Attendance and Winning

We regularly have a recurrent discussion after a poorly attended game about why people don't show like they used to.

Wyoming is a good example of winning affecting attendance. Laramie doesn't have NHL, NFL or any other big time sport to compete with their college teams. I a reason often mentioned when we discuss attendance) But their attendance does move greatly with their ability to win. Last night they had 3200 people in a 12,000 seat arena. On TV it looked more like 1500. Before it was renovated, their arena used to hold 15000. They regularly put 12,000 to 15,000 in it IF THEY WERE WINNING. On a down year they drew 1/4 of that.

Winning is what matters to attendance.

DJ

The kid has been far more than we could expect from a high school senior/college freshman. He’s carried a heavy load for the team and continues to get better it seems. Yesterday he led the team in scoring again and led the team in rebounds for most of the game, ending up tied for the most rebounds. He also leads the team in minutes per game and that has begun to worry me. Yesterday he was hobbling around a bit in the first half. He seemed ok in the second but I’m concerned about his stamina thru the end of the regular season and into the MWCT. Without DJ this team is bottom third in the conf and has no shot in the MWCT. With Wyoming and especially SJSU coming up next Sat at home perhaps CKK should give DJ some rest in those games and play him sparingly (unless needed). After those games come SDSU and then at UNR, then the MWCT. The next two games will be the last chance to get him some rest and fully healthy for the final push.

ESPN Transfer QB article

Bill Connelly from ESPN recently wrote an article, "10 most interesting quarterbacks for the 2024 college football season" with the 2 UNLV additions coming in at #9.

"

9. Matthew Sluka and/or Hajj-Malik Williams, UNLV Rebels

i

At the FCS level in 2023, six quarterbacks (a) threw for at least 1,700 yards with a passer rating of at least 150 and (b) rushed for at least 250 net yards. Two of those six will don UNLV jerseys in 2024. Coach Barry Odom couldn't hold onto quarterback Jayden Maiava after his 2023 breakout season, as the sophomore-to-be transferred to USC. But Odom turned the loss into an opportunity, bringing offensive coordinator Brennan Marion two of the most exciting and versatile QBs from the next level down.

Over the past two seasons at Holy Cross, Sluka threw for a combined 4,217 yards and 46 touchdowns while rushing for 2,481 yards and 20 more scores. He led the non-scholarship Crusaders to their first two FCS playoff wins ever, not to mention two wins over FBS teams (UConn and Buffalo) and a near-upset of Boston College last season. Williams, meanwhile, comes to Vegas from Campbell, where he completed 71%, threw for at least 300 yards three times and rushed for at least 40 yards three times.

It's hard to accurately project which FCS-to-FBS transfers will translate properly at the next level. Some don't. But the hits -- quarterback Bailey Zappe (Houston Christian to Western Kentucky), defensive end Jared Verse (Albany to Florida State), quarterback Vernon Adams (EWU to Oregon), etc. -- have been pretty spectacular. And grabbing two FCS transfers obviously increases the odds of landing one gem."

The other QBs to make the list:

1. Drew Allar, Penn State Nittany Lions
2. Kyron Drones, Virginia Tech Hokies
3. Jalon Daniels, Kansas
4. Avery Johnson, Kansas State Wildcats
5. Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee Volunteers
6. KJ Jefferson, UCF Knights
7. Josh Hoover, TCU Horned Frogs
8. Miller Moss, USC
10. Preston Stone, SMU

Walk the ball up

Dribble at half court and pass right to center to left all beyond the 3, throw in back out drive pass to baseline back to 3 and 30 seconds violation. If your going to walk it up and start your offense at 16 seconds and pass it around this is what you get, Wyoming is horrible. Not having backup PG and guys who can create on dribble, that's UNLV.
