Kevin

I get it.
That Boise game was tough to get fired up about since we don’t have the talent or desire to compete with them (and I don’t think they are a top 50 team per my eye test). Sure, they looked like a FF playing us, but so do worse teams.

Dedan would be better in a better system. Pape could develop. I agree with the rest not standing out (I’m not a big Hicks guy but won’t squabble over that).
Agree!

Hicks is an “out of control” type that is typical for UNLV recruits!

By the time he learns how to play, he will be a freaking senior, we would be lucky to get 1 decent season out of him!

I'm going to be honest, this is the season that broke me as Runnin' Rebel fan. I'm not a glass half full guy on the best of days, but I just don't see how anyone can get any optimism from this current regime. I think this offense is actually worse than Marv's offense. I think we are laden with tweeners and incomplete players and don't have any 'system' that we seem to be building a roster for. Kev's got his dad's stubborn propensity to play favorites despite having players who easily are better eye-test guys. Thomas is a really nice piece, I think that Pape and Hicks have some nice upside with development and other than that I can't see anyone else who really deserves a roster spot. Hill is a tweener who doesn't do anything terribly or very well, Henley at least plays a little defense and can slash a bit. Bedford was brought in to be a scoring wing and he simply isn't and a poor defender. Whaley is a tweener and is always hurt. Rishwain would be fine in a Travis Bice 12-15 minute role as a shooter but he's definitely not a starter on a top 50 team. Bear Cherry can't stay out of foul trouble and can't handle a big with a pulse on either end of the post. Bannarbie might have some upside, but he's got that super fast hook and he's definitely got some freshmen tendencies. I would have thought that Evans could have provided some bench offense to this team especially after the wing injuries we've been through but you leave the RS on him like your job is on the line. Jace Whiting is too small to be a wing, too slow to be a point, and has been hurt.

Roster construction, offensive and defensive cohesive philosophies, set plays, clock management, recruiting, development, understanding the feel of the game--someone tell me what Kevin does well? I can't see any real growth in any of these areas. This is the modern era of college hoops. It doesn't take more than 4 years to get performance out of a team. Kevin has been screaming what he is for 3.5 years and I just wonder if the front office is finally going to listen and move on. Honestly, this kills me to say--but my worst nightmare is that Kevin goes on a run and somehow saves his job and gets an extension. I never even reached that point with Marv, and while I think Marv was actually worse than Kevin because he had a TON of high level assistant and some lower level head coaching success, Kevin never did anything to heal the wounds that Marv inflicted.

I'm not even watching the games that get recorded to my DVR right now.

100% right. No matter the scheme or coach, name of the game is to score more points than you give up. If they score nothing, you just need to win by a field goal, or a safety.
2000 Ravens and 2015 Broncos, Those were defenses that won championships!

If we are concentrating on defense, I think this was in fact the “home run” hire!

Easiest way to win the MWC & compete in the playoffs is with a defense that can hang with P-4 teams. No doubt he can put together an offense easy enough that can score 28+ per game.

Agree. He also spent the last few years watching the recipe for success of P4 teams playing the the CFP and having a dominating defense and an offense that scores and takes advantage from that defense.

Lady Rebs

Me too, should be a great game this Sunday.
On, the New Mexico Lobos board. Half of the poster's there, think they will beat UNLV Lady Rebels.
They, say we don't have a dominate post anymore.
What, they don't realize is. UNLV, is pretty athletic and play great defense.
And, the Lady Rebels non-conference schedule, has prepared us for the Mountain West games.
These, MW games are relatively easy, compared to playing Oklahoma and @ Baylor.

The games I've seen UNM play they aren't as athletic as in seasons past. And, as you said, this Lady Reb team is pretty athletic, especially by comparison. I would argue that conference games are typically as tough as the higher level non-con teams due to familiarity. Conference teams know the roster, the tendencies and throw all kinds of wrenches into what a team wants to do. Also, UNM is the most recent team to beat the Lady Rebs in conference IIRC and that was in the Cox.

All that to say, I like the Lady Rebels chances in the Pit game.

Lady Rebs

The previous game at Boyzee was also a hell of a good game. I see these lady's turning it up a notch and are way more focused playing these challenging games. Alexander with 21 points and Jackson with 19. That's 40 points of the 70 total points scored tonight.

Next game at NM is going to be another great game. Sunday 1pm PT on CBS Sports Network. Both undefeated in conference play. I'm looking forward to watching.
Add to that much of the team was sick for that BSU game.
This team isn't playing as well as any of the last 3 teams but key players are getting back to their "norm" of how they have played in the past. Add that Alexander is looking more comfortable in the offense.
Positive signs.

He said in one of his opening talks to media that although he was an offensive minded coach, defense was going to be his top priority. Looks like he wasn't just blowing smoke.

I think it’s closer to home, imo. He’s an hour away from his hometown plus a good $$$ nil deal.

We couldn’t beat it. Good for him though!
Agree. Happy for JDJ. He gave his all here and helped elevate the program a bunch. Hope he continues to grow and takes his shot at the NFL.

Players and coaches officially signed

Does Coach Mullen own a motorcycle? Bobby Petrino and I want to know.......

That said, I scoff at all these recruits, coaches and staff UNLV is trumpeting. WSU is waxing your ass. Our six (and counting) new coaches, plus our new HC, bring a wealth of FBS experience with them. Let me see - the total years of FBS experience among our new coaches is, let me get Excel out to calculate, ummm, ZERO. Beyond the wealth of experience (2-3 years for most of them) for those coming from SDSU, we snagged a coach (and transfer player) from Cal Poly, stealing them from former WSU HC and now Cal Poly HC Paul Wulff. Who went 9-40 in his 4 years at WSU. Foolishly let go and replaced by some bum named Mike Leach. Not to fear as we also got a coach from household name College of Idaho (NAIA school).

But our recruits are even better. Our 4 incoming 2025 freshmen transfers hail from such FBS powers as.........SDSU, SDSU, SDSU, and SDSU. And I don't mean San Diego State U. And typo, I meant FCS power. Our 15 and counting portal transfers so far are equally prominent. Their list of former FBS schools is a loooong one. Let's see. 15 from SDSU, oops they are FCS, but a bunch are from bigtime schools. Oh wait, they are all from SDSU.

Estimate for MWC media deal

Back to the main point, I agree that UNLV probably made the best move, but I don't think it was the more prudent. I think long term it is riskier. Just to the fact that if the plan doesn't work out (being a B12 invite) we will be potentiall stuck in a lesser conference making less revenue per year once.

But shooting for the B12 should be the goal, and anything to make that more likely the better.

First time me seeing the signed MOA, thanks for sharing. Interesting that the first payment won't get distributed until the 61 mil is collected. That doesn't make sense to me. They said that would be distributed initially in 2025, but that is impossible. The first chunk of money are the poaching fees at that will be 55 mil max. We won't get the exit fees likely until the teams officially leave at the end of the 25-26 season. I guess so much for a chunk of money next year.

I would hope that they will do the first distribution as soon as the poaching fees are collected, whether it is the full 55 mil or a reduced amount.

I mean it is possible that the conference gets less than 61 mil total. If the poaching fees are thrown out and the exit fees get settle for about 11 mil a piece, then that is < 61 mil.

Legally could UNLV get screwed based off of the agreement language? Meaning we get zero extra dollars?!? Technically we would not have reached the agreed upon money threshold. if that we the case.
The exit fees (based on MW charter) are being withheld from conference distributions to the schools that are “exiting”. Those payments would normally be made somewhere between June 1 and July 1 (can’t remember the exact date) of every year. So those funds would be what is used to at least begin to pay the “bonuses”.

So the withholding is at least part of the collection method for those, and probably why, when things get added up it LOOKS like the exit fee would end up being $11 million vs $18 million. The other $7 million would probably have to get sued for and the MW may just figure that to be a lost cause, since they would have to sue each school individually.

If any “poaching fees” are collected prior to that then those would get added in when they’re collected obviously. The only collection method for those though is the lawsuits we’ve already seen filed. So who know how long that could take.

Could UNLV get screwed if it’s less than $61 million based on not reaching the threshold and get zero? I’m not a lawyer, but I’d say no… other than getting way less money than they were expecting.

AN amount of money WILL come in and everyone in conference agreed to the %’s, including their own… even though they’d “have the votes” to change it to an equal distribution there’s no chance it would hold up in court.

As far as “long term” is concerned… if at the end of 4 years of the new media deals (2030?) for both conferences it’s “not working out”, do you not think the PAC or potentially another league want UNLV in 2032?

If we essentially break even with the PAC over the course of their media deals and then join them in 2032 wouldn’t we have played our cards perfectly?
