Available candidates (non UNLV staff)

32-25 is a disaster? Odom was only 25-25. It’s not like we can get an Urban Meyer to come. Going to have to take a chance on someone who has some flaws one way or another. To each their own, but I think he’d be great
He got ran out of Miami for a reason.

0-5 vs Florida State (you be ok with losing to Reno 5 years in a row?)

Bowl blowouts.

Oversaw the worst loss in the programs 90 year history and that led to his canning.

He’s a good DC, but not a HC or program leader.

Nick Rolovich weirds me out but I always wanted to see the RNS offense at UNLV so *shrug*

I hate the run and shoot but will gladly sit through 50+ pass attempts per game if we are winning.

As for Rolovich. I'd be OK with it but I said in another thread it feels like such a lazy hire for some reason. Like if Harper said 'No stone will be left unturned during our search' Goes outside turns over the first stone he sees. 'I think our works done here boys' .

Can't hurt to ask but probably try to position himself for an NFL job.. (Moore)
Not interviewing or at least contacting Harsin would be AD malpractice.

Neal Brown
Tyson Helton
Jason Candle
Clay Helton
Nick Rolovich
Bryant Harsin

I think those are realistic names of guys that UNLV could possibly entice or lure away from their current job. None are making much over a million some under 1 million per. In the case of Rolovich, Harsin and Brown a chance to get back into coaching. Brown was rumored to be heading to Appalachian State but talks broke off? He came out yesterday saying he's not taking that job. Rolovich has some legal battle with WSU I think? Not sure if that's still going on. So don't know if that might impact him taking a job at college level.
If these guys are making about $1m, seems like we can offer $1.5m then have a lot for staff to make sure they are quality.

I thought you said that, for the sake of your liver, you'd need a coach who runs the ball and coaches in a way that the good Lord intended. 🤣

I will say that, on the surface, I like your suggestion of Neal Brown. But would he come to the west coast? He's stayed west of the Mississippi his entire life it seems.

Rolovich is a career .500 coach who hasn't coached the last 3 years. That hire would make me nervous. Would rather someone a bit more established.

I think our administration will take a pass on that one. He still has court cases against WSU. I saw an article that said the court case is scheduled to start today.

One of my good friends is a Cane, and he despises Golden more than we despise Maxson or Massimino. I mean just off the charts hatred for that guy.
Probably wasn't the best idea for the Canes to hire a button up dude like Golden who wears a tie on the sidelines and runs a tight ship. Yeah, that was a disaster waiting to happen. Al Golden is a very good football coach.

He wouldn’t be at the top of my list, let’s just say. But if he’s hired and gets a decent OC, we could have something cooking. But why would he leave a cushy job for unlv?

So you went through the blow outs and going 0-5 vs Florida State? That’s like a cardinal sin at Florida or Miami.
I'm a UNLV fan. If I can still say that after 42 years I can take anything. I chose Miami in the 80s because my dad said "son, if UNLV is going to be your team of choice you might want to pick another team to also root for, just so you can cheer on a winner." Miami was the best team at the time and was reminiscent of UNLV basketball.

I'd be OK with it, but would hardly be excited about it. You're right the years away from game are a concern, could he put any kind of staff together?

One reason he hasn't coached is the legal stuff with WSU.

As for record I kind of look at jobs individually. Hawaii is a pretty tough gig. They have their bumps but it seems hard to sustain there. I thought he was solid at UH.

WSU was such a short stint kinda hard to gage.

Definitely some red flags though.

We could definitely do worse. He has improved ND's defense quite a bit.

okay, so Mullen.. take whatever they were prepared to offer Odom and go after him? Is that a terrible strategy?

I'd be all for it

I don't know if UNLV ever thinks that big.

Could they yeah and I'd be glad I was wrong.

I think you're more likely to see a Nick Rolovich on the low end with high end being Harsin (Which would be great. Might even be better fit than Mullen. But Mullen might get fans/boosters more excited.

I say pass on Rolo. Rolo was a somewhat realistic candidate last time (still had some things to work out with WAZZU).
But is seems like we should aim higher than many of the candidates we were talking ourselves into last time. It is a better job now, and we know we have more money to potentially spend.

I feel like Harsin would be fantastic here, Rolovich doesn’t excite me. But 2 years of Mullen would be a grand slam.

Nick Rolovich would be like buying a Toyota Corolla. Glad to have a new car. You know pretty much what you're going to get out if it. After five years it's still reliable never gave you any problems. But you kinda wish you had spent the extra cash for something a little more fun and exciting.

(No offense Corolla owners they are great cars. I guess I could have used vanilla ice cream as an example of steady if unspectacular)

We’ve got to offer more than Odom was making if for no other reason than to send a signal to the Big12 that UNLV remains serious about its program, but also to be in the game for a quality coach. In my mind that’s a min of $2M up to $3M with the ideal spot being $2.5M so there’s a little more room to pay for a d3cent staff.

You aint wrong.

I have a freezer full of elk meat if that sweetens the deal.

Call it years of being beaten down....

I just feel like UNLV will go the lazy cheaper option and it will be Rolovich.

Mr. Harper you have 27 phone calls on hold.

Ok patch through the 1st call.

'Hi Eric, Nick Rolovich here'

'You're hired'

More making fun of UNLV not Harper. I'm sure he's doing his due diligence.

If it's a guy like Rolovich after 2-3 day search it would just feel lazy. If it's Rolovich after 7 - 10 days I would figure UNLV struck out or got turned down and it was the best option left.

That’s pretty much where I’m at. I’m prepared for Rolovich and expecting to be at CSU level. Hoping for Mullen or Harsin at this point to further elevate the program.

Neal Brown would be a coach I would look at seriously.

Was excellent at Troy. Was middling at WVU but that's been a tough job for some time now. I think he'd be a really solid hire for us. Even middling at WVU he had a better record than Odom at Mizzou.

D’Anton Lynn was mentioned earlier but what about his dad Anthony Lynn. No college coaching experience, could bring his son in as associate HC (is that a step up from DC at USC? Maybe more job security based on how Riley is doing). Anthony is also a UNLV graduate.

I wouldn't be mad about it.
