Available candidates (non UNLV staff)

Here's what's incredible about this LA Bowl opportunity against Cal. If Harper is thinking about upgrading a current Assistant Coach, here's their interview. Pick your choice and give them the keys. If we kill Cal or win in an unbelievable fashion, we have our replacement. If not, fresh new look it is.

What about Silverfield...
Steal him from Memphis.
Again, that's a big boy move. You make him a huge offer he's only getting 2.2 million a year, or you force them into an untenable contract...
Could UNLV get the same money earmarked for Odom?

I like the idea.

Feels super unlikely though.

All right here's my let's be realistic list of candidates I'm sure will make everyone super happy.

Jason Candle - Toledo
Tyson Helton - WKU
Neal Brown - Troy & WVU was really good at Troy
Jim Mora Jr - Uconn & UCLA
Clay Helton - Georgia Southern & USC
Nick Rolovich - Working at a gas station I think.
Brian Harsin - Out of football currently.

Other possibilities.

Rich Rodriguez- Jax State was a candidate last time.
Gary Patterson - If he calls you answer but not sure if he would be interested. Getting into that John Robinson retirement tour stage of his career.

In House (I don't think either happen but never say never)

Brendan Marion
Micheal Scherer
Scherer is someone I would want to hire down the road if you don’t take him now. You only take him now to preserve the class he’s build, if he’s an option. I believe he follows Odom, but who knows.

I m not sure I could say the same with Marion. It isn’t due to lack of ability. I think he’d be alright as a coach. I have no evidence to back it; but I just feel like Marion’s career here would end up like Petrino’s. Great talent on the field, but a liability off the field.

It won't be either. I think that was decided today by who the interim coach is.

I think it was decided by Harper’s criteria. He’s looking for someone that’s won as a HC, and has the Rolodex to put a staff in place and get players.

I just don’t know if Marion has the same connections and vision to put things together quickly and it will have to be done quickly. He’s already removed UNLV from his twitter bio.

Pretty much what I was getting at but worded poorly.

And I agree.

Marion must have gotten his ass reamed over the NIL $100k issue so he isn't sticking around for an interview I guess.

Or maybe he wasnt going to be a candidate here so it doesn't matter... Harper had the same criteria last time around. We will see, but I'm fine not hiring assistants again.

This doesn't seems like a friendly departure. I could definitely be wrong. Until 24 hours ago, Harper didn't know about this decision? They were discussing extension after the season over. Report that CBO is taking most of his staff with him? No "good bye" to the Vegas fans? Shieet, we all love him very much. Why such hatred?

Perhaps Odom is just showing his true colors and wasn't quite the stand up guy that we thought he was? Hope that's not the case but you never know.

Harper alluded to that.

When asked about why he couldn’t keep Barry it was “BigTen has deep pockets” and “People change”, “Barry kept me in the loop…just the last 24 hours.”

Harper seemed stunned but tried to keep it professional as possible.

I couldn’t believe Odom picked Purdue of all places to go for his next stop. The BigTen is loaded with money backing other programs and Purdue is at the very bottom. If he can’t win a bowl game or beat Boise state, he’s not going to last very long there.

Seems like Odom is a different person in front of the cameras and another in private. Cash grab instead of a legacy.

Odom is a coach like any other. Good with the public and the media. Different person behind the scenes.

He turned the program around. For that, I'll always be thankful. He was offered generational wealth and took it. I would have done the same thing.

That being said I hope he's a spectacular failure at Purdue.

Like players that leave, I won’t even check on them unless our paths cross or I’m flipping channels and they’re on, I’ll give a quick look. It’s not out of spite … I just don’t care.

I don’t wish him poorly or well … he’s out of our area code, what happens, happens.

Neal Brown
Tyson Helton
Jason Candle

All realistic in that we can afford them. Brown in particular was really good at Troy, just over .500 at WVU. Helton wins consistently averaging around 8-9 wins a year at WKU. Candle has been solid at Toledo.

Would you take any of those guys?

He was offered good money here as well, he didn’t like the offer, oh well hope he flames out at Purdue and is just another college coach nobody will remember.

Does anyone at any of Odoms previous stops miss the guy? No. We just need to make the right hire here, someone that can beat top 50 programs and win some trophies. Winning a few games under Odom was nice, but it’s time to start winning games that actually matter.

I might wish him poorly if we went to a peer school in or near our conference. For example, if Odom was at New Mexico and left for Utah State; if I were a New Mexico fan I would wish him ultimate failure. I don’t care about the raise argument at that point, you burned your fanbase there. Never expect kindness from us again. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

With Barry its a little different. I don’t blame his assistants who he took a chance on originally for sticking with him either. Go earn that money. Good luck. If the report on his salary is accurate, he’s taking home $3.9m after taxes or more than double his pre tax salary here.

I think he’s one you’ll see on the list …

He's currently the OC for arena league football or some crap.

Not gonna lie..

2 years ago I'd be like cool!

Now...

Not so much.

Also games will be 7 hours long because we will be throwing the ball 70+ times a game..That's a lot of extra beers to consume before they shut off sales in the third quarter. I also need to think about my liver when considering a new HC.

You won’t have to. He’s going to Purdue. I know exactly where they’ll be.

At least I didn't say Urban Meyer. Or Rick Pitino.
