Available candidates (non UNLV staff)

Somebody mentioned orgeron... I would like that. Players love him and he's from the SEC where they get down and dirty in recruiting.

Would you be willing to wait through Oregon's playoff run?

Feels like that's a lot of time in portal/recruiting/retaining you could miss out on. I don't think any coach coordinator or otherwise would leave with a shot at a national title.

Here's what's incredible about this LA Bowl opportunity against Cal. If Harper is thinking about upgrading a current Assistant Coach, here's their interview. Pick your choice and give them the keys. If we kill Cal or win in an unbelievable fashion, we have our replacement. If not, fresh new look it is.
I don’t think we can wait that long. We need a quick but quality hire to work the portal. That’s exactly why Odom is announced and signed now.

I would love Orgeron. I have always felt that a coach that can recruit well but maybe not as strong in the X's and O's can work in Vegas. Ideally they would be strong in both, but beggars can't be choosers.

Harper alluded to that.

When asked about why he couldn’t keep Barry it was “BigTen has deep pockets” and “People change”, “Barry kept me in the loop…just the last 24 hours.”

Harper seemed stunned but tried to keep it professional as possible.

I couldn’t believe Odom picked Purdue of all places to go for his next stop. The BigTen is loaded with money backing other programs and Purdue is at the very bottom. If he can’t win a bowl game or beat Boise state, he’s not going to last very long there.

Seems like Odom is a different person in front of the cameras and another in private. Cash grab instead of a legacy.
The fact anyone is “stunned” is laughable and tells me all we need to know.

Where is he coaching? I thought he was done.

I don’t know, Harper alluded to conversations and that they talked regularly. Then mentions that Odom was only transparent in the last 24 hours.

He also called him professional about it.
I didnt think he was stunned, just disappointed. They had what he called regular candidates talks. He never used "blindsided or surprised".

If he was blindsided or surprised, we’re in trouble.
I said this on X..
What if Harper just got lucky with the Odom hire falling unto his lap and he's actually not that good at his job...
Bungled the conference realignment stuff
Kept Kevin despite multiple opportunities to move on
Now had no clue that Odom was leaving...

He mentioned the last 24 hours Odom was transparent, so what about the previous year and the bogus extension? These things aren’t happenstance where Purdue just drops a 30-35 million dollar contract on Odom on a Saturday night just because.

I also think today was supposed to be a day where UNLV celebrates the la bowl invite but instead it is about this bullshit. Could’ve waited but I don’t think the phone calls between Odom and Harper were amicable.

Arroyo would not have been fired (which was a surprise after 3 years) unless Harper has his replacement lined up.

What is the value of speculating on that?

Right, but Odom walked into the facility and said "I want to coach here." Then Arroyo got fired and his agent called... you think Odom was just on top of his list and he called Barry and was like "you're my number 1 guy"...

There was a potential replacement lined up but it wasn't Odom.

You make it sound like Odom was a no brainer. It wasn’t like Gary Patterson or Ed Orgeron walked in and said I want the job. Odom had a career record of 21-24 at Mizzou.

Not saying this is realistic because I believe he has turned down P4 overtures and doesn’t sound like he wants to be a HC again, but Al Golden would be a great hire if he were open to being a HC again.

Bryan Harsin would be a very good hire but I would be surprised if it happened.

Would kicking the tires for Kellen Moore be akin to asking a Gucci supermodel out as your prom date?

He was a disaster at Miami. Hard no.

Can't hurt to ask but probably try to position himself for an NFL job.. (Moore)
Not interviewing or at least contacting Harsin would be AD malpractice.

Neal Brown
Tyson Helton
Jason Candle
Clay Helton
Nick Rolovich
Bryan Harsin

I think those are realistic names of guys that UNLV could possibly entice or lure away from their current job. None are making much over a million some under 1 million per. In the case of Rolovich, Harsin and Brown a chance to get back into coaching. Brown was rumored to be heading to Appalachian State but talks broke off? He came out yesterday saying he's not taking that job. Rolovich has some legal battle with WSU I think? Not sure if that's still going on. So don't know if that might impact him taking a job at college level.
