Available candidates (non UNLV staff)

I watched a lot of games that Anthony Lynn coached for the Chargers. I have no doubt that he is a good running back coach. He is not a good head coach. He made a ton of head scratching decisions during games.

You did not. Just a few bleach drinkers speculating.

I don't love it I don't hate it. There are some things I do like.

It just really feel like when you say the phone was ringing off the hook and 48 hours later you name Nick Rolivich as coach, those calls were from your mom, not interested candidates.

He does have ties to current OL coach so player retention recruiting would benefit there. Offense will be fun (I hate it but others love it), could attract decent QBs.

Rolo would be the easy hire. He'd probably be able to have good seasons here.. easy hire, not alot of work, cheap, screams UNLV..
Swinging for the fences there's just so many better names out there we could and should try to bring in.
And anyone that thinks our local media knows anything about candidates, they don't. They're just listing easy names as well.

Could do a lot worse than Rolovich if he is indeed the hire. Don’t think it excites anyone though.
UNLV needs to keep all the new boosters on board and be able to excite this town if they want any chance to continue to develop fan support and have any chance for the Big12. Swing for the fences! Just like in the film Signs

Yeah I remember some of those being a Pats fan. He did have one really good season where the Pats were only favored by 3 at home in the second round of the playoffs because they didn't have a good regular season and the Chargers had won like 12 or 13. Instead of passing they ran the ball all over their defense and they never adjusted gave up 42 points. 42-17 or something like that. A sub .500 season followed and that was that.

Harsin still hasn't been announced as the CAL OC. Taking too long. He could be looking at HC jobs. Maybe us? His OC job with Cal would pay under a million. We should be able to offer $ 2 mil.

At Boise

I made a similar comment earlier. I wonder if he has reached out to Harper.

If Rolovich can bring Stutzmann with him, I'm down

SJSU OC? I hate the offense but he's good.

I can already feel my blood pressure rising as we lineup in the pistol at the one yard line and throw the ball three times. Or after the 10th bubble screen.

I'm actually fine with Rolovich if thats the hire. Don't love it don't hate it.

I think if it was Rolovich I'd be most interested in who he brought in at DC.

Had a dream last night that UNLV couldn't secure anyone with HC background and had to go the coordinator route. 😬

Wait until I tell you what our red zone TD percentage with our run first offense was this year haha.

I'm not locked into any offense or defense, but in my heart power running game with vertical play action is the ideal offense.

I think Rolovich is a below average hire personally. He's a .500 career coach across the MWC and 2 bizarro seasons at Wazzu with a career SRS of -5.74 against a SOS of -2.51. If you compare him to Barry who was .500 at Mizzou but had a SRS of +4.45 against a SOS of of +2.56 I don't know how anyone can act like those are similar resumes. Rolo performed more poorly against a weaker schedule for his .500. And yes, being in the MWC vs the SEC does make a difference, but if you compare apples to apples Rolo had an SRS of -6.53 at Hawai'i against a SOS of -3.73 while BO had a +5.26 SRS against a SOS of -2.31 at UNLV. Much better results against much better competition than Rolo.

You'll also have to completely remake the offense. It's a recipe for even a larger player diaspora and at least one 'transition' season where we significantly drop off in quality.

I think Harper is smart enough to stay away from that guy.

Not sure who we get, but Odom was not on any list I read last time. I have a feeling this hire will be the same.
That's because he fell into Harper's lap by happen chance... him touring the facility the year before getting hired made him call.. I doubt there was as much interest last time as there is now. Harper probably didn't get as many truly interested candidates last go round. Becoming a top tier G5 program changes alot of things.

Most of the 12 coaches in the CFB Playoff went from assistant to HC at schools better than UNLV. I get UNLV isnt getting the best coordinators like some of these names were and I get that hiring a seasoned pro makes a lot of sense at UNLV, but coordinators have worked well at places much bigger than UNLV.

Assistant to current HC position:
Lanning-Oregon
Smart-UGA
Swinney-Clemson
Day-OSU
Dillingham-ASU
ND's coach
BSUs coach
SMU's coach

Those that did have HC experience before there current position, but with the exception of IU's coach the first 3 went from assistant to HC at better schools than UNLV.

Huepel-Tenn (UCF)
Sark-UT (UW,SC)
Franklin-PSU (Vandy)
Indiana's coach ( a few smaller schools, last was JMU)

I prefer offenses similiar to you. And yeah our redzone offense was putrid this year. And it really shouldn't have been.

I don't think Rolovich would be a disaster of a hire. But my expectations going forward would be reduced.

As the kids say it would be just meh.

I think our HC vacancy will be well sought after. They are sure to have seen how Odom set himself up for life after UNLV. We have great facilities and now a good program. If a HC has the confidence and can keep this train running at full speed they too will be in a position in a few years to seek that better paying job. Outside of BSU we are a better job than any other MWC school. SDSU can shove their metrics up their ass. Just saying.
