Ya better schedule some time off during Championship Week.

Happy Humpday

After seeing everyone else in this league play a couple of times

Is it just me - or do you see this conference, no matter how many teams end up in the NCAAT, as struggling in post season once again?

Whether SDSU or UNM are “the best”, or whoever else you want to put in that category … I don’t care what rating they may have achieved at some point of the season … they all look extremely beatable by mediocre squads. Not to say they can’t play well and win, but seeing how incomplete and non-semi dominant they are.

Distant past, you know SDSU was pretty damn good. Same with BYU with Jimmer back then. Recent past, UNR had a pretty tough team to beat with Muss, SDSU a little bit, too. Boise has fielded some “solid” teams …

But now … I don’t know, seems like it will most likely be another o-fer NCAAT. Of course matchups and seedings come into play but in general, the top third of the league isn’t strong. Not nationally. Doesn’t look that way to me.

I guess the good part of all of that is you have a chance in every game within league. The separation may be rather large in terms of games ahead/behind or rating within conference, but the bottom doesn’t seem quite as awful and the top doesn’t look amazingly difficult.

UNR

On to the only meaningful game left in the regular season to most fans. CKK won’t lose his job with a loss but losing will begin to significantly undercut his support among the faithful, especially if UNLV is soundly defeated. I haven’t paid too much attention to UNR but the appear to have a decent team based on NET rankings. How do we match up fellas? I’m not at all confident. Sure hope we at least roll into the game 100% healthy.

Big Point Guards

Not since Magic Johnson have we seen a big point guard. It seems that most coaches want a 6'2" quick slashing guard. the one mainstream coach to fight that consistently is Mark Few. He has 6 guards in the NBA at this time. They are all 6'4'" or better. Two of them in the last four years were in Final Fours. Shooting guards are tending to ^6'4" or better. This is probably due to the Power 5's swallowing up all the good big men. The Zags have landed 4 international players for next year. Two are guards over 6'4" or better. They are also recruiting 250 lb forward from Australia, 6'7" maybe a little bigger. Just mentioning this, because Kruger has gone to the bigger, agile, linebacker size SF in his offers also. Coaches tend to watch what the Mark Fews of the world do. Sampson at Houston has led the way in the linebacker size PF's and SF"s. Baylor and KSU also don't have anyone over 6'9". Probably a reaction, to the point and guards driving to the basket with impunity from the refs.

Biggest Team Failure

You could say rebounding or defense in general but IMO the main culprit is 3-Point Defense. We absolutely suck at defending the three. ( 269th in the Nation) Below are the team 3-point season percentage averages for each of our conference losses compared to the team percentage against us. You'll notice that the only team that failed to beat their team average was SJSU. Every other team beat the average. More than half by @ 15%. In our conference losses we allowed teams to shoot an astounding 44.5% from three. You almost couldn't roll the ball out and just let teams shoot without a defense and do worse. Amazing.

SJSU - 28.3 - 25
SDSU- 35.7 - 52
Boise - 37.2 - 53.8
C State - 37.2 - 43.8
FSU - 28.3 - 47.4
Utah State - 42.6 - 44.8

I don't expect this to get fixed. It's a team flaw that goes to the roots of the defensive scheme along with guard height and speed. I think he's catching on by pulling JJ ( way too short). But, IMO, it will plague KK wherever he coaches.
