Marion versus Petrino

We are ranked about 21 spots higher in yards per game versus TAMU and about 22 spots higher in points per game. I would never have thought that we would have upgraded once Petrino bailed.

SEEMS STRANGE TO SAY

Seems crazy or strange to say considering our history...

But anything less than 8 wins would feel like disappointment at this point.

Start of the year I thought 5-7 maybe 6-6. I thought team would be better coached but still lack enough horses to get significantly better in the W/L column.

Well six wins are here already and I'm definitely happy about that. But it really feels like 8 is a realistic possibility.

alright serious question, I went to check in on everyone’s favorite transfer…so he tore his chest muscle and is out for the season over at Michigan St.

I like him but we’re playing so good…I totally forgot about him.

I think he will be playing on Sundays. Hope my sorry Dallas Cowboys will pick him up.

Yeah he beat the crap outta that Michigan player but you kinda gotta like that same energy he would have for Reno.

Not much love, hoping we do breakthrough this season.

UNLV
We're waiting for that UNLV breakthrough; I think it'll need at least one more year. However, if Vegas is going to upset the apple cart in the Mountain West, it'll be on account of playing six guys with four or more years of college experience. Kevin Kruger went into the portal to stock up on experience. One young bright spot: Dedan Thomas Jr. is the Mountain West preseason freshman of the year. The four-star recruit was the top player in Nevada last season. Landing him was significant for Kruger and his staff.

This effin' guy

Congrats Rebels, after going 6-1 we have finally surpassed SJSU in the power rankings, but not Boise State.
Apparently he thinks he won't get another win for "another few weeks". So I guess we are losing to New Mexico. Hate to break it to you all.

Barry Odom and job openings

The more we win, the more rumors will swirl with Odom and potential job openings. Thankfully there shouldn’t be many openings that make geographical sense, but could see a few. Houston, Indiana, Michigan St and Cal could be potential openings. Also could see someone try to poach Leipold from Kansas and they could open. Really hope we can get at least another year, but seems likely that it will happen at some point. Though I could see him waiting until his son has graduated HS. Would be a nice change though to have a coaching search for that reason. Of course, we need to keep winning. We were talking about the same thing this time last year with Arroyo and he ended up getting fired, haha.

Regarding streams....please read.

As many here know, I relay a lot of streams, when they are on things like, say, CBS Sports for those that can't get it, but when they are MTN etc, please please PLEASE read the post below I also put in the Football forum....please only push links when directly requested because they can't get the MTN at all EVEN after trying a VPN. It adversely effects the revenue the free MTN run streams get for concurrent viewers.

Please view here IF you can, if you are geo blocked, install proton VPN (free). The more concurrent streams they get the more ad revenue they get the better the streams get, just like YouTube, Twitch etc. See how that works? For the love of god don't use bootleg Kodi type streams for free content. You are hurting the very broadcasts we watch for UNLV by doing so.

You don’t have to comment Mastiff ….

But I have always found it very strange how kickers - place kickers and punters … are essentially an afterthought for many coaches. Some are grabbed through walk on … some PFO, or whatever. It just seems like there’s little urgency and the goal is to get someone who is good enough that shows some interest.
I mean, I get it in a sense. Of course you want a strong linebacker, a speedster with hands, a runner who is cat quick but can get tough yards.

I’ve always been a special teams fan (there goes my invites to Knights games) - I really do consider it to be a third of the team, offense, defense and special teams. And I think they are important. No, not just because Pizano has been near perfect this year. I think they can turn a game just as much as anybody else. And certainly more than that 4th string DB.

We’ve had some really good kickers at UNLV. Garritano won some big games for UNLV. I remember, Brad Faunce I think it was … completely flipping the field late in the game to give UNLV a rare win vs UNR back in the day.

I’d always place a premium on overall special teams play … I think the last 4 coaches essentially ignored it, it seemed like let’s pay attention to it in this last 5 minutes of practice. And I think you are taking away a chunk of what you can do on the field.

Just some random thoughts. Suffice it to say, Pizano has been huge for UNLV. And so has Jacob, both on ST and in the field of play.

Let’s check ourselves- share stats…

Call it years… decade + of being leathered/scarred from being optimistic about a new coach or wins in a row. I really do love this hire, being defensive minded!!… and the staff he put together I’m really happy with.

I have a sick feeling that we have been wining games that we should win and adding more value to them than I think is warranted. (I don’t think Coach is doing this, which I’m happy with) This was literally a back of the chipotle napkin numbers of Ws Ls of opponents records for us and our next game. While we should win the most important game of the year - I really think this is a game that is not really represented by the teams Ws & Ls. It’s still ‘early-ish’ in the season, but I think it shows a little more light on who you beat and lost to.

I see this team progressing and growing (maybe it’s the optimist in me), but I really feel the extra week with the new staff will help bring it to another level. Well,… I guess reno could say the same.
