Bucky is probably the most feasible and most likely, fits our brand to a T. Young and provides an exciting style of ball. Only issue is how much experience does he have with corralling boosters and getting funding for NIL. The other issue is that unlv is a different job, it’s not Samford where there’s security. There’s actual expectations and a lot of pressure. I suppose a lot of these things can be mitigated with his charisma, something that can be noticed in the interviews with Harper etc.

Tom Crean, not much needs to be said, though he’s not getting talked about enough on rebelnet. A seasoned coach and has been through it all. He’s recently indicated that he’s eager to coach again. Tons of connections (Tim Buckley could return as assistant as well as Stacey Augmon) and there wouldn’t be any doubt Crean can put together a quality staff. No BS hire and understands the brand/expectations.

Will Wade - Experience- Check, style- check, coaching connections - check, can handle donors, expectations at unlv - check. Staffing - check. Would be a grand slam hire, BUT there’s a lot of other schools interested and we’ll see what happens. There’s no question Wade is number one on everyone’s list.

Eric Olen - Has a good resume, he just wins at any level. It was only recently that UC SD was a D1 school, and they have almost 30 wins this season. Similar to Bucky, it is unknown how he would handle a school with big expectations from donors etc.


Any of these four would be great hires and would definitely be an improvement over Kruger.

Yes there were positives, not denying that. More over the next weeks after we digested that he would be here. I know I personally try to see the positive in hires on why something could work.

There were also a good amount of positives with Kevin when we thought that he would be bringing in a bunch of B12 dudes. And that Lon could be pulling some of the strings.

But back to TJ, my point was that it was mixed at best. And that the negative comments had nothing to do with the fact we was going to leave us prematurely. It was basically because he was a no name and not good enough.

yeah they announced it last week. Good job to land at for him. Hes probably going to be one of those NCAA tournament darlings in a few seasons.

If the only coach that could bring UNLV fans happiness this cycle is hiring Jay Wright, then we are setting ourselves up for huge disappointment.
This also applies to Will Wade as despite rumors out there, hes not coming to UNLV and it wont be because we didnt try or that Harper failed

Today's LVSun article by Grimaldi did a good job of summarizing everything that has already been posted on this forum. We do good work.

Good summary of our NIL outlook. A. Marshall's input is good and makes some solid points. Grimala's points on getting a coach to sell the program to boosters is good. If you get a chance it's not a bad read.

IF Kevin did not go all in on coaching then he deserved to be fired. IT takes the right minded coach to win at any level. Should of eat sleep and 100% committed to BB.

Kevin was self imposed. It was convenient and safe from a fiscal perspective given the entire contract was covered by the buyout. But it was all potential and no real substance/track record to justify the hire.

I really wanted it to succeed, because I like Kevin. I liked bringing back the connection to the Krugers. I think if it was anyone else with the same resume we all would have flipped even moreso.

Marv was in the right place at the right time. We were totally effed, and someone had to take the job.

Fair points indeed. I think the conventional wisdom for Beard was he was only going to be here 1 season, just like his previous stops but that meant NCAA tournament. I liked the Otz hire. I thought it was out of left field because it wasn't the "big name" but when you looked at the record and the upward travel, he was one of that seasons coaching darlings with that we could actually get. The whole ISU situation just like the Texas Tech job opening made both hires look worse than they were on paper. However both stuck us with terrible options in Kevin and Marvin and that makes it look worse.
