Washington State hires South Dakota State HC

I suppose you ghouls want to know what the Mighty Loyal One thinks of this hire. Here are my comments on my board. Met with a mix of crickets, one line crap and insults.

I don't hate this. BUT:
  • He has been at his alma mater, SDSU, almost his entire career. Spent one year as a grad asst. at FAU along the way
  • He is in his second year as a HC.
  • The Jackrabbits are perennial FCS playoff participants, runners up in 2020 and champs in 2022. So repeating in 2023 in his first year after being an asst. for 10 years isn't all that surprising
  • Of the Dakota/Montana schools, he is probably the least enticing. I'd rather have Bobby Hauck from Montana, who despite failing at UNLV (who didn't?) has been a HC for 19 years. And beat the mutts in 2021. Oh and he's making $265K. AND, since he is 60 and has stuck with Montana (and seen success) since 2018, he's a helluva lot more likely to stick around and probably close out his career here
So no, not a "great" hire. At best, a relatively unproven "OK" hire. I'm not even sure about the "OK" part.

Part 2 of my ranting:

Ok. I was saying that $2.0M was about right. Close enough.

But riddle me this, Batman. Per below, $1.8M is more than 52 FBS head coaches (all G5 BTW). 37 of those coaches make $1M or less. Some a lot less. And I can't find (yet) FCS HC Salaries, but the ones I have run across start with a 2. And not $2M.

So, is this second year HC from FCS worth more than 52 sitting FBS coaches? Or ALL other FCS coaches, many of whom would probably sell their kids for $1M+?

Oh and since I sort of latched onto Bobby Hauck as a more desirable pick, did you know that Missoula is 256 miles by car from Pullman? Much less by air. Brookings, SD? Another 1,020 miles past that by car, not all that much less by air.

WTF is the point? Familiarity with recruiting markets. How many payers does SDSU have from California, Or and Wa? 1. Montana? 29, plus 4 or 5 from Hawaii.

He was a highly touted pass catcher out of HS brought into Florida and recruited by Mullen there before staying for Napier... he's been hurt and transferred to South Carolina then got buried in depth chart behind pretty decent TE. He's was #14 ranked TE out of HS
It looks like he played in 4-5 games a season for three seasons you would think he would have a catch. Even just one, but who knows maybe Mullen gets it out of him again.

I have been watching the Sacramento State recruiting. They have signed some good offense players. Two decent TEs. Kindly of surprise because I thought Marion hated TE's or is it just Balungay?

New OC & QB Coach

Important note, it was a 2 year contract. He won't be wasting a bunch of time seeking other OC positions during the next 9 months.

QB hard to say TE is a big downgrade unless this guy comes out of nowhere. No catches in three seasons doesn’t elicit a lot of confidence. We have some good offers and visits on the defensive side hopefully we make up for it there. Signed some WR’s from big schools also, would think good shot at least one of them pans out.
Cain comes to my mind and to take things way back with a name from the past, how about Straiten!

11 wins with qbs that are probably in bottom 25% as far as throwing

The one difference is I would bet anything we score more than 7 points in the title game with Maiava as QB.

Not saying we would or wouldn't...

I think Maiava could have pulled out a game like Syracuse. I also think he was as capable of imploding and we lose to somebody like KU..

With Mullen as HC I'd rather have Maiava than Hajj. I think Mullen could get the best out of him and correct some things.
