IF REMAINING MWC TEAMS WERE SMART

Couple things I haven’t seen mentioned or discussed…

Does the “two year notice” come into play at all? When the defections were announced we were already two games into the season and yet the new conference needs to be intact by July 1, 2026. If I’m the MW I’m probably firing shots that the early exit fee is actually double based on that… hell, it is t even a full two years by the start of the 2026 football season.

Secondly, what are the PAC 2 gonna do for schedules during next season? Might be a small problem but it’s basically going to make next season obsolete for both of them. They might be able to schedule with the defectors early in the season but after that it’s gonna be difficult to schedule games against anyone in the MW or AAC.

Just random thoughts.

IF REMAINING MWC TEAMS WERE SMART

The more I think about, if I were Harper I wouldn't pay ONE dime to join the PAC. If they want UNLV, make the offer. But don't expect UNLV to pay an exit fee to the MWC. Why? No matter how it is dressed up and what ever you want to call it the PAC is G5! No different from the MAC, Sun Belt, AAC or what ever.

What matters is winning and Boise State became a national program as a G5 by winning and it wasn't in the MWC. It was in the WAC playing many of the exact same teams that the PAC now wants to discard and leave behind in Hawaii, SJSU, Nevada, Idaho, Louisiana Tech and Utah State. Did conference affiliation as a member of the WAC stop Boise in 2007 when they went 13-0, went to a BCS Bowl game and defeated Oklahoma and ended up ranked 5th in the final AP poll. NO!

If I were Harper, I would gladly accept the $15-20 mill or what ever it is from WSU and OSU and give Barry Odom a $1,000,000 pay raise and extend his contract. Also, I would give raises to the assistants. Right now, retaining BO and staff is more important than any G5 conference affiliation, because IMO he is on the path to achieving something special at UNLV and he can do it in the MWC or the PAC. It doesn't matter! Just WIN!
1000%. Conference affiliation is passe. Why worry about getting into a conference that provides the same exact path to the big goal?

I guess it depends on whether one thinks the TV money from conference affiliation is more important than the success of the program.

AAC - ACC

I'm really starting to despise this PAC resurrection.

We really need to get that 1st G5 playoff spot and a BIG12 invite.

I'm done with the BSU's and SDSU's fans. BYU fans seem more bearable at this point. The regular season Arizona and ASU games would have more ticket sales than what we saw against BSU in the MW championship. BYU would probably put more asses in Allegiant than half the games in the big12. The Utes love Vegas! Cincinnati basketball games would feel nostalgic.

This needs to happen. Geographically, it makes too much sense. UNLV FB isn't some fluke success story. UNLV, as a whole, is FINALLY being ran properly.
Look at how well the Iowa St game was attended by ISU fans... that's an opportunity that's likely every home conference game. Big 12 fans travel and Vegas is a destination

Idk about that last sentence lol

I see you edited your original post. That was nice of you. All I did was quote your words after you denied saying them. Hey I'm in UNLV's camp here. But start dissing my beloved Wazzu and I get defensive.

College Gameday was in Vegas for the NFL draft? That's not the same thing. C'mon now.......
I edited out the flaming insult. It had nothing to do with my point. But carry on Mr. Important.

PS - nobody gives AF about Wazzu

No it would have gone the same!! Cause I talk to random strangers the same!!

I assure you. You approach anyone in yoga pants a plastic green cowboy hat a bath robe and a care bear t shirt that conversation is going in a different direction...

Probably involving security. 😀

I was at Target today getting my medications and I wore my UNLv fishing hat. Some guy was wearing Cornhusker gear. We instantly just started talking about the Huskers beating up Deion and Bud Crawford leading the stampede.

He said holy cow, I never seen UNLV this good in football. I said no, this is like 40 year draught that ended. You gotta watch us in football. Him and his wife agreed.

If you had been wearing the bath robe yoga pants and green cowboy hat that conversation would have gone much differently...

I don't disagree. But we've seen this dance before.

CU went from B12 to PAC back to BIG12 and they were not very good for a long stretch of time.

It's not always about results. Boise State has been pretty damn good for quite a long time and yet no offers in expansion.

In no way suggesting that results don't matter, they do, but there are other factors in play. Outside looking in UNLV seems to have done enough academically, upgraded facilities both basketball and football play in state of the art stadium.

Why they weren't considered over CSU is curious to say the least.

One argument I heard was Vegas has become a pro sports town. Sure that's true but Colorado us all about the Bronos, Avs and Nuggets and it took hiring D. Sanders for CU to get any attention.

So much of this doesn't make sense.

My board has no consensus. Some think we should try to get the AAC schools. Some think UNLV will be invited soon (if it hasn't already). Most are just stupid and have no informed opinions. Drunken Cougs. Oh wait, I am sort of getting tipsy at 11PM my time. No worries, I retired early! And I'm a Coug so it is to be expected. :)

It's a free board......

A quote from one regent was that UNLV AD and President have been in contact with PAC. Outside of that crickets.

To be fair AD Harper runs an extremely tight ship. The hiring of Odom was a complete surprise. There wasn't so much as a peep or mentiin of Odom as a candidate until the day he was announced.

#25 in the ratings carries some weight when up against programs in smaller markets! Ratings are based on what have you done for me now not the past, and currently UNLV is a hot commodity!

Wyoming I don't get.

This is absolutely no knock on Wyoming. Down this year but they are typically middle of the pack and really tough at home in football.

Basketball...Not so much...

They draw pretty well for football. Have a pretty dedicated fan base. Considering the small population size, they have solid booster support. They also have pretty damn good football facilities.

But in terms of being a prized media market..Not so much.

It's a really tough job there. Low population, meaning in state recruiting is tough (less overall talent) coupled with bigger schools probably swooping in on top end talent that does exist. Even in this world of the portal and NIL I think they have a ceiling.

SJSU is interesting. Really hard to pass up on a massive market like that. And I know media execs look at market potential as much as market penetration, but SJSU really doesn't draw well attendance wise or on TV.

I could see them as a final add type if PAC looks to get to 12 maybe but initial 8 or 10? Not so much.

Let me ask this, what's the consensus on your boards as to who is going to be added next?

I'm sharing a shortened version of a similar post I put on my home site. You guys can find it you know, just click on colleges. IMHO, this could be pretty big......

And edit - so to leave the AAC, it is a 27-month requirement and a $10M fee. If a school wants out earlier, the fee is "negotiated". Ended up being $18M for Cincinnati, Houston and UCF. AAC originally wanted $45M per the linked article.

Ok so - the Pac offers two of these schools. They need to be here by 7/1/26, well before the 27-month limit. The AAC sez hmmm, we can really hardball these traitors, and the Pac will have to come to their rescue. Think of that. It will be at least $18M based on last time. And they ain't that great. The Big-12 snagged 3 AAC teams a year ago, and it wasn't the teams we are now supposedly "looking at".

I've cooled on Air Force. UNLV and either Wyoming or SJSU. Done.

OT: Hypocrisy in politics

You should watch it, if possible, because you never know what might happen. Prime example is the Biden vs. Trump debate. How many people knew that Biden had degressed so much? I sure didn't and was glad that I had seen it.
Wut..his acumen was bad when he took office.

I just watched Trump with Gutfeld on Fox News today.Trump is cool as a cucumber. Much more relaxed compared when he is debating.

Fair point. But that interview is more than we are hearing about or from anyone at UNLV...
Not conplaining, UNLVs relative silence could be by design. I don't know.
