Assuming Hawaii gets done..Then what?

There isnt a perfect solution and thats what the Pac 12 are finding out as well. They all chose to cripple themselves potentially vs conference opponents by the terms they signed on for, with unbalanced payouts for CFP and NCAA credits. Their banking on a trade off that the teams included in the deal will help drive up the media market price, but they failed to factor in that just about every team not named Boise they added are awful this year when they need to be out negotiating the TV deals. They had to give away the equal tournament credit distribution to attract Gonzaga and SDSU. Now they are finding out same as us, that there arent a lot of valuable dance partners across the G5 landscape and the ones who are, are locked into their current spots and arent willfully budging. Were lucky in that we only needed 2 new partners to legitimize our conference in the NCAA eyes and from a dollars and value perspective, it was easy to add UTEP and potentially make Hawaii a full sport partner. That doesn't necessarily cripple the MWC, while it wont be the standalone top tier as it currently really is across both football and basketball, its still a potentially top tier G5.
Meanwhile the Pac 12 needs to add 1 team, but theyve already compromised their original values to create the top tiered conference, the product they brought is woefully underwhelming this year, and they couldnt secure the bigger fishes they wanted and now that the contract terms are public, theyre probably going to have a harder time attracting filler tier programs. It sucks that instead of being the best conference far and above, they thought they could cut the dead weight, give themselves competitive advantages financially, and everyone would just play ball and join in...

I agree with a lot of that except SDSU/FRESNO are massive markets so their middling results really don't matter in terms of media packages. They've been good enough in the past. We are what? Three years removed from SDSU being if not top dog sharing that with Boise? CSU again middling results but big TV market. USU is the anomaly, but they've had steady results.

To get Memphis and it make any financial sense I have to imagine it would require paying majority if not all of their exit fee and a Media deal around 12 million per. That would be 3 million more than current AAC deal. Seems like a lot of that would get eaten up in travel costs.

They absolutely appear to have over played their hand.

One thing about the deal UNLV agreed to stay in MWC I'm not sure about is the lump sum and subsequent 1.5 million dollar payments. How I understood it was that 1.5 was to compensate UNLV for potential media rights shortfall.

What I don't know is let's say MWC somehow scrapes together a media deal equal to the 5 million the get now. Does UNLV still get that 1.5 million per year on top of the media deal? Or was that simply a safety net?

Assuming Hawaii gets done..Then what?

True. They have bolstered their standing by playing a garbage schedule. Well that isn't going to work for them this season or in the near future as is looks right now.

So it would make some competitive (and financial) sense for them to want to join the MW, but the travel would be brutal.
If that is what they want, come on over. Travel to the other side of the country and to get bludgeoned every week.

Assuming Hawaii gets done..Then what?

If the MWC can get out of these Friday night games, it wouldn't be too bad. Arent they a private university and most teams charter these days anyways. The Hawaii games would suck... Basketball you just do road, road, home, home, week off, road, road.. something that lets them balance travel. They would need an East coast partner that could help that kind of arrangement.
Yeah, honestly they may only want to be a Football only member.

I think they have a good amount of money, so the marginal bump in TV revenue they would get may not be much of a factor for them TBH.

Even so they would probably want an east coast partner like WKU.

Playing a Bball game in Hawaii is just brutal.

Do you really think Liberty wants to play a team like UNLV right now? Especially if the game is at Allegiant. UNLV would embarrass them.

You can get away with a 7 game conference slate in football. Adding one more noncon football game is pretty easy to do. Trying to add more basketball games in conference season will be tough. It will likely be quad 4 exclusively. Either that or make the non con very rough without much rest. We struggle enough to get decent games during the rodeo.

I get having to protect the conference for the future. But we are in a bit of a financial crises now. Add teams when it is required and not before. Unless you can get a school that is at least as good as the mean MW team. But even that, it needs to be as good as the mean CURRENT MW team. Which basically means Utah State.

Sure reach out to Liberty and WKU and see if they bite. But Liberty trying to travel to 4+ MW teams a year from Virginia is very rough, probably not worth it for them. Kentucky isn't that much better.

Defense

If the game ended with this score I would have been fine but we went into prevent and let the guy pass for almost 600 yards which is a very “bitter” pill to swallow!

My only question is why did the coaches decide to coast in the second half on D?
Key guys got hurt so don’t say it was to give our depth a chance, they did not play because the starters were in all game, hence the key injuries to Mani, Elad, Catalon etc..

I thought we were a better team defensively this year!
Game context matters. Playing aggressive defense is good, but it can lead to more big plays. Dinking and dunking takes time off the clock.

Keeping everything in front of you. Going to a bend but not break defense. We played that way too much last season all of the time, because our personnel dictated that. This year we have been able to be more aggressive. But when you get to a point where you have a huge cushion, the way you play will often change

If you have a multiple score cushion, the gameplan changes. This isn't a unique issue to UNLV. Winning the game matter more than giving up passing yards. This same team did similar things to Boise the week before.

I'm sure that the staff wasn't fully "happy" with how the second half went, but they knew what they were doing at the same time.

Press conference

Those OSU linebackers are a disgrace. Good lord they took themselves out of every play on that highlight reel.
OSU as a school pride themselves as an academic school. Their study body tell a different story. I know that CBO glorify their size and speed. They looks extremely malnourished to me. They fly all over the place but they looks confused against Reno. Hajj feet needs to be active in this game to keep our defense rested. Not going to happen though, our boys Catalon and Woodard want that TO.

Assuming Hawaii gets done..Then what?

Then why expand in basketball? Scheduling?

I do think Gloria has to look long term in football as well or potentially end up in a similar situation. I'm not sure UNLV to the BIG12 is realistic, but they gave themselves an out when they re-upped with the MWC. If UNLV were to leave in 3-5 years then she'd be back to scrounging again. Plus I imagine if UNLV were to leave AFA would consider bouncing to AAC.

I understand the idea of keeping it lean but good lord that conference looks rough on paper.

I mean think about it. Our lone addition is arguably the worst team from CUSA...

Please don’t bring this guy we saw enough of him here in Denver!
I hope that we don’t adopt this philosophy on D because I makes any and every QB look capable!

I mean our offense pretty good but it ain’t “the greatest show on turf” by any means so all this type of defense does is keep the door cracked for the other team to climb back into the game!
I'm an Eagles fan so I'm currently living it. It's Hell

UNLV v Boise State

BSU gets their week off at a good time for them. Their RB, WR, and OL rooms are pretty banged up. RB2 Sire Gaines may be done for the season, RB3 Breezy Dubar missed UH game. WR2 Latrell Caples left UH game early, WR4 Chris Marshall hasn't played since Oregon (ankle) but was suited up for UH. The OL lost their starting center three games ago and started two guys I never heard of against UH.

Broncos fans traveled well to HI, so I'd expect a good showing in LV.
unless they spent their entire sharecropper stipend to fly to Hawaii.

Joe makes a good point. If it's a closer game at half, we don't call off the dogs. Also, I don't think we call off the dags SOOOOO early if we don't answer the USU TD with such an easy drive. It put us up 48-14. Game is over with 9 mins in the 3rd Q.

Also, I don't see this as the same "drop off" we saw last season. Last year, the drop off came in 50+ yard TD plays...multiple times/game. Scheererererrerrreer is a lot like Nick Fangio. Give up everything underneath, bend not break, nothing long, and attack/jump passing lanes when available. We had 2 2H dropped Ints in that system. We did give up a lot of yards, but those two dropped Ints and this is a 30 point blow out. I knew USU would backdoor cover.

It is concerning, but nothing like what we saw last year.

Again 41-7. We were fine. Sure they moved a ball on us a little when the game was still a game. He is a good qb. I am actually more concerned with our run d in the first half tbh.
Syracuse a little different story. They played us completely different than they had all year. It took us a while to adjust. Arguably too long. But still. We may have been a bit too cute on defense with the gameplan.
No question about it, we have had some issues in the pass defense. Good news that is not a concern for the next 2 weeks. But we have also been very good in pass defense this year too.

Petras was the starting QB at Iowa for 3 years and has thrown for over 4000 yards in his career despite playing at Iowa... He might not be McCord, but hes a really good passer and he also has Royal, who is likely to be one of 3 or 4 MWC WRs drafted this year... We looked bad becuase we flat gave up trying for the most part in the second half on both sides of the ball.
Iowa has been dreadful the last several years.
I believe someone even went to an Iowa game last year and said as much.

No he is not good but with our DB’s giving 7 yards cushion the guy looked like Montano!

4000 yards is like only 1300 yards a season, nothing about that says passer to me?
I believe some of our poorer QB’s at UNLV threw for that number.

I agree with the last thing you said, we looked bad in pass coverage!
