Official Game Thread UNLV at Houston

Here are the stats. Nothing really stood out apart except the rushing yards. I dont remember how many punts UNLV have but it was low.

6 sacks... I don't remember the last time we had 6 real sacks in a game and that diesnt count to 2 intentional groundings... felt like we were in their backfield all night.

Good game for the D and running game but we will need more than 71 yards passing? That is the one negative stat that stood out to me. There are too many options on offense to throw the ball to. That is a Brumfield like stat that will not be a winning formula going forward!
That's what happens when you choose to not throw the ball in 2nd half... a 12/21 for 150 yards and 4 TDs stat line would've looked nice, but we decided to just run out the clock I guess

He had two big completions wiped out on back to back plays by holding calls.

Up three scores there was no reason to throw the ball. Rebs were churning up yards on the ground and chewing up clock.

Was it a great performance by the offense, no, but it was steady and they pushed Houston around in the trenches.

Also left 6-10 points off the board. Missed FG and not converting on 4th down inside the ten.

I was at the game and Rebels absolutely bullied Houston all night. Houston TV call was playing in stadium. Announcers were shocked at how physical UNLV was.

I don't know if the passing game will be dynamic this year, but I think it will be good enough.
Me too…man it was humid. The offense wasn’t great but also not as bad as the stats show as pointed out a missed fg, a 4th and 1 in their red zone, two big passes off holding calls. It could have looked different it needed to I don’t think their secondary was that great plus clean some things up let’s see how it goes.

That 2nd holding call on St. John was some grade A bullsheet. The one on Shanks...maybe.

The best thing about the offense was the offensive line, they really controlled the line of scrimmage and that’s impressive vs a power school. As mentioned before, there were a couple of holds and couldn’t convert a 4th down near the goal line. I think there was another 4th down that was not converted.

This game could’ve been 42 or 50 something to 7. Easily.

TO WIN ON THE ROAD to start the season vs a name opponent/p5 school is impressive. This was a great outcome.
I laugh when I read articles and podcast writing or talking about how the second QB came in late for Houston as was dominate because he went 7 of 8 on passing. Maybe they should look at the fact that the bench was in the game and their was no more pressure to run up the score!

Yeah, that last drive our starting defense was over laughing on the bench. Kind of was upset we didn't keep everyone in to preserve the shut out but I also understand why risk injury for pride

I was wondering about that. Two huge pass plays wiped away from holding calls felt fishy but really hard to tell from the seats when you are following the ball.

1st one yeah. 2nd one no.

I mean in that scenario, to call back to back holds the 2nd one better be absolutely blatant. And it was anything but.

The coach was going to make sure all the players had a chance to get into the game! Long term give everybody meaningful reaps and have them ready for injuries.

Yeah I thought we just decided to work on the run game in the 2nd half because it wasn't working that great overall and the D was dominating. I am thinking Burrell is going to end up starting.

Burrell and Allen may take over the lions share of the carries. Allen was close to busting a couple big runs.

I like Burrell's feet and pad level. Decisive and seemed to fall forward on every run getting that extra yard or two.

Last year univ of Houston should have beaten Texas. It took a BS call for Texas to win that game. Houston has talent.

They had some but they lost a ton of dudes in the portal as well. They may be in for a rough year. Not trying to rain on the win. It was impressive but Houston is going to struggle this year.

Didn't Coach Odom say that after we got a decent lead he decided to use the ground game instead of passing?

Interesting, I didn't take it as a bait but instead came in to blitz, recognized what was happening and make an amazing adjustment. Regardless, it was fantastic.

Bait maybe the wrong word. He showed blitz..I'm not sure if he was going to continue to bring pressure or not. Maybe dependent on reading the receivers and backs?

If back stays in to block continue blitz if back leaks out drop?

QB read blitz all the way...Catalon dropped and we know the rest.

Great play..

I thought that would be top10 sportscenter. Then I saw that DB from Robert Morris pull that INT straight out of the matrix.

I'm not sure why you would put the ball in the air when you're up 3 or 4 scores.

Two long passes got called back.

This offense will be much more run heavy this year with Sluka.

No doubt the passing game will need to get better because there will be games when opponents make it harder to run the ball.

But I'm ultimately more concerned about the result than final stat lines.

I think you'll see them take more shots downfield in the future.

No reason at all to do it in this game.

Not sure if this was evident on TV but it was live at the stadium.

It was pretty humid in Houston around game time.

Yeah Vegas is hot but that humidity is stifling.

I'm not sure if it was conditioning, some type of special hydration regiment or UNLV dominating time of possession, but by midway through 2nd quarter UH dudes looked gas. A number of their guys cramped up. Rebels looked really fresh throughout.

I was surprised at the cramping that the Houston players had.

I also thought the first pass each quarterback threw in the 2nd half seemed as if the ball slipped out of their hands and wondered if sweaty hands had anything to do with that... or I'm just old and didn't see what I thought I saw. Probably the latter.

Yeah it was noticeable. I was on UNLV sideline but up high so you could see across.

Rebs bench was animated throughout. There was not a lot of energy on that other sideline at all.

I really do not think they expected the level of physicality UNLV brought. And I think the defense was much faster than they expected. UNLV really stretched a lot of Houston runs east/west and held them to minimal gains.

I think our first scoring drives was like 7 plays, 75 yards in like 2 minutes... that'd gas you real quick especially when you're getting trucked by our QB and then smashed by a RB...and then you're offense goes 3 and out, 3 and out...

Rebs were passing around jars of pickle juice.

Ya sure how did putting in the back up in last year work out? Win far more games with the back up then if Unlv stayed with the same starter. I never said to put him in I answered a question to what is seen to out him in. I have no idea who the problem is. Is it time is the coach was it the qb. I don't know but finish drives was an issue and that will lose games.
I hear you and agree. They’ll definitely get better on offense. For what it’s worth, Coach Odom said he took the air out of the ball (play call wise) after the pick six. They just wanted to run it so made it more predictable to stop.

We did have 2 big pass plays taken off from holding calls. One was 58 to white and the other was like 35 the play before. And another one early on that bradley(?) Should have caught.

There was another shot middle 2nd half to RW3 that didn't connect.

I think it gets better as Sluka gets more reps with the 1s, even if Odom is saying nobody will get "all" the reps (I think that's for the best, but maybe like a 65-35 or 70-30 split with HMW is good)...

I don't think they'll be saying that anymore. Sluka needs to get as much time with first team as possible. That was a strategy to keep Houston guessing on game plan, but moving forward, Sluka needs the time with the 1s to run the offense and get things like cadence and timing right... a couple of times that was off- the run where he gets 11 on a scramble but almost dropped the ball- was a very late RPO, and the bounce pass are good examples. It'll get better. Just needs to get the time together

Based on Sluka's running, and seeming willingness to take hits, they have to give HMW some reps with the 1s. It would be a disaster to have sluka get hurt in 6 weeks and HMW hasn't thrown to his top targets outside of pat n go and 1 on 1s or worked with his OL. Maybe it's like 20%, I don't know. But if every 5th series with the 1s was HMW, that doesn't sound like enough to, tbh.

I agree with this if we are up big next week let Hajj play the second half. Sluka is hard to bring down and not afraid to take the hits he took a big one last night but that means him going an entire season and not missing a game would be a surprise and we need someone who is ready.

The way Sluka runs, we will need someone to be ready, agreed that Williams needs game time and reps to be prepared. He is clearly capable or the decision on who to start would have been made weeks ago!
