The Paint Hasn't Dried Coaching Speculation Thread.

Gary Patterson would be a home run!
Late to the party today. Surprised Harper was given the green light given the price, but since he was, I am understand the move. A few thoughts…

1-I love that Harper is making the decision and there is not waste of time and money firm being hired. Doesn’t mean he will get it right, but at least he’s willing to put it all on him.

2-I am not surprised whatsoever that the players are upset. Arroyo is a very likeable guy. I’m sure most players liked playing for him. At the end of the day, though, the job didn’t get done. Can’t start 4-1 and lose 6 in a row (especially being uncompetitive in a lot of those).

3-Coaching candidates I don’t see happening
-Deion Sanders - has been offered Colorado and may get other P5 looks.
-Morgan Scalley. - HC in waiting and has some baggage (racial slurs, stereotypes).
-Gary Patterson - has resisted other opportunities to stay in Texas. I don’t see that changing any time soon. IF he wants to be a HC again, I could see Texas St maybe
-Rich Rodriguez. He let Harper go when he took over at Arizona so there was no overlap. His own baggage and age are working against him.

4-Realistic coaching candidates I could see
-Mike Stoops. Had some success at Arizona (which is a tough job). Harper was his director of football operations. He is 60 though, so age is working against him a little bit.

-Joe Klanderman - Kansas St DC. Harper‘s alma mater. He’s young, led the 14th ranked defense in the nation and playing in a championship game this weekend.

-Collin Klein - K St OC - pretty much see above though not as experienced and offense wasn’t as dynamic as the defense. Still put up 33pts a game though.

-Bryan Harsin -for reasons already mentioned.

-Alex Grinch - USC DC

- Garrett Riley - TCU OC

Will be interesting to see who’s targeted. Should give some insight as to what the budget is. Hopefully it’s similar, if not more, than the budget when Arroyo was hired.

Mentioned Grinch earlier. Coached at Wyoming I believe, so he knows the conference.

Good list/reasons.

Nah... Seems like they would wait for the new hire
Unless we had a player dominate like Windom last year, these guys aren't getting paoched, per se. I think that our PK and the LB are the only two good enough for P5 teams, and neither have any more eligibility.

@Bullmastiff 1 If you gripe about kickers I'll insta-ban you. I set the algorithm on RN to immediately act on kicker's and long snapper's behalf.

Just came across this article. Mostly speculation, but some names not included above.

Possible HC candidates

From that article Ed Orgeron is an interesting name. He can recruit as well as anyone, players run through brick walls for him, spent a lot of time at SC so knows SoCal well, and is tight with JRob. He had JRob on his staff at LSU as a special assistant. He has some baggage from LSU so P5 schools I don’t think are beating down his door.

Haven’t been on in years I might get rejected for this

Urban Meyer
Not that I makes a difference, but I would never support that considering how he treats players. We don't need it.

How many of those potential candidates have been head coaches?

I’m hoping we don’t go the FCS route again but the job Taylor has done at Sac State has been really impressive. I think he’ll be a good coach but I don’t know if UNLV is the right spot.

I saw McCardell’s name mentioned on Twitter. Seems like a little bit of stretch as HC for me.

I’m not sure about Frost. UCF Frost and Nebraska Frost looked liked 2 different coaches.

Happens sometimes.

Harsin at Boise vs Auburn
Herman Houston vs Texas

Is Patterson in play for UNLV? Herman and Harsin are great too but Patterson is my pick. Lane Kiffin my favourite but Coach Patterson is cool with me. If UNLV can land Deon Sander, world would change....

You can see Lane Kiffin and Deon Sanders can bring energy to this program. Matt Prattrica from NE would be awesome. Academics and football.

Great post. Can confirm 2 of those names have been contacted multiple times. Oddly enough, neither of them are of the “needs D1 experience” group.
Guessing at least one is Klanderman. The other is most likely Grinch or Riley imo.

Should have mentioned Herman in my original post as someone I could see as a realistic hire. Having called a few games on tv, he would have spent a bit of time preparing for the broadcast being around the program and would now be fairly familiar with the league

Seen the facilities first hand as well. (Herman)

Im told the money would be there if Neon wanted to come here.
Just posting my original post from the confidential board..

I think Deion knows he’ll be up for big time jobs soon, whether it’s alma mater FSU or an SEC job, he will get offers.. Being reported that Colorado offered, I think UNLV is more enticing.. Looks like he likes projects/turning cultures around.. I’d rather come to Vegas than CU, he’s a perfect fit for Vegas to bring all that energy here.. Even if it’s for 2 years, I don’t care, you know he’ll leave sooner than later.. But he would change the whole program around immediately & have Vegas jumping, I’ll take it.. I honestly don’t know how serious the reports are, but if Harper were to pull that off, would be monumental..

Likely a fake tweet.
Wasn’t sure on that.. People keep saying his name & I was shocked, he’s got bigger suitors.. But, not his dream job calling yet.. If the Rebs need to be a pit stop to get to FSU or somewhere else, I’m sure we are all for that.. I’m sure Vegas would intrigue him a little bit tho.. We’ll see tho, not expecting anything by any means, but if that tweet is true, very interesting..

I have a feeling Harper is moving quickly. I expect it in a week or sooner. Have to get the guys here hyped, recruit via transfer or high school , talk to our 3 recruits to see if they are on board.

I hope so, with regards to the quick timeframe. Don't want to get UNLV'ed (think Munsoned from Kingpin) on this one. Strung out then left behind

Legit Names.

Gary Patterson. Does he still want to coach or is he enjoying life in the studio.

Tom Herman. Younger guy. Great at Houston. Struggled at Texas. Good recruiter. I definitely make that call though.

Scott Turner. What's he make as an OC in the NFL?
Patterson is on staff at Texas I believe. I am good with Herman as he's was on Cofield a few weeks back when he did TV Commentating and met with Arroyo and took a tour of the Fertitta Center. Herman said UNLV is set up better than when he was the coach at Houston.

You're correct on Patterson. He was in studio last season then right?

I could really get behind a Herman hire.

Would be pretty ironic if he met with Arroyo then ended up replacing him

Personally, I can't believe we can pay CMA 2.3 million over the next 2 years and still afford a staff that can get better results immediately.

So much of the UNLV football history at this point is impatience coupled with getting it wrong and rinse and repeat I'm not even sure how to feel right now. I don't know if I was convinced CMA was the guy, but I'm less convinced we'll somehow get this right.

It has to be someone with HC experience, and preferably someone who has built a program. I wonder if we'll hear Rocky Long's or Dennis Franchione's name pop up...they seem to be in the mix every time.
His buyout is 75% of his pay over 2 years if he doesn't take another coaching job. When he accepts the job he will end his UNLV buyout.
