The Paint Hasn't Dried Coaching Speculation Thread.

I'm not advocating for him. Just saying he might get consideration.

And I agree.

Herman or Patterson would top my list.
When you say Herman, I'm assuming you're talking about Herman Edwards, right?

I will admit if he was hired we would likely see over 40K per game immediately! The bigger questions are would he want the job, and could they pay him enough if he was interested?
His name came up over Thanksgiving dinner and our friends looked up his salary. His base is only $300,000 plus other stuff. I think that three other schools, including Colorado. BTW,I'm talking about Deon.

Personally, I can't believe we can pay CMA 2.3 million over the next 2 years and still afford a staff that can get better results immediately.

So much of the UNLV football history at this point is impatience coupled with getting it wrong and rinse and repeat I'm not even sure how to feel right now. I don't know if I was convinced CMA was the guy, but I'm less convinced we'll somehow get this right.

It has to be someone with HC experience, and preferably someone who has built a program. I wonder if we'll hear Rocky Long's or Dennis Franchione's name pop up...they seem to be in the mix every time.

I think Long is on his final tour as DC in Nrw Mexico doing his former player Danny Gonzales a solid.

Franchione's phone hasn't exactly been ringing off the hook for jobs. Probably a no..

I'll keep beating this drum.

Tom Herman has to be a top candidate.

Tom Herman would be a slam dunk. I'd love that choice!

I'm sure he's likely on a few schools short list. I think that's why you go after him as quickly as possible.

He awas also in the booth for a few UNLV games this year. Not sure that matters, but figured I'd point it out.

What about Steichen?

I was thinking Long, as well. But isn’t he like 94 years old? If he has a couple of good years left in him, could be a decent short term measure.

How many boxes does that one check????

There are primary boxes and secondary boxes. We like filling in the secondary boxes first.

Yeah he's closer to being done than rebuilding a program.

I think he'll ride it out as DC at UNM with Danny Gonzales and call it a career.

What about Scalley?

He was (allegedly) almost a done deal last time.

Or has that shipped sailed with the text controversy?

If I'm Herman, I know that UNLV football is a career killer. I would wait, there will be better jobs available.

Long is 72, Frachione is 71.

Hey pal, why don't you keep your Tom Herman negativity to yourself!

Also....

Alex Grinch DC for USC, interesting name.

Scalley ain't happening. He'll be Utah's HC in 2025 or 2026. Plus he's making like $1.5M as a coordinator. You know I wanted him in 2019. It was almost a done deal. He just couldn't put pen to paper.

An extra million a year could certainly make it worth his time. Put in a buyout for when Utah comes for him in the future and everyone wins.

i did hear earlier today that Gary Patterson is interested. I don't know what direction Eric Harper is leaning.
This hire, and how this hire's team performs, will determine how good of an AD Harper is. I liked the fact that we promoted from within when Harper got the job. Over the years he has represented UNLV great.
I hope he gets this right in which case he will be regarded as one of UNLV's better AD's

Patterson
Herman
Alex Grinch USC DC
Rich Rodriguez
Kevin Sumlin (doubt it but a name)

I love the fact that Eric Harper is looking at the big picture. IMO when rumors came out earlier this year that SDSU was going to get an invite to the PAC 12 and UNLV was not mentioned it was a wakeup call to UNLV. UNLV has the best stadium in all of college football to play in and practice facilities that are among the best in the country. The team is getting better but not nearly good enough to be considered for a P5 invite. They need a better coach to get the program to the next level.

I could be wrong on this, but his mother said he’s super happy where he’s at as of last year. She used to live at my work. Didn’t sound like he was ready for another HC position.

Facility I'd agree.

College stadiums, I think atmosphere, traditions game day experience matter a more than bells and whistles. Improved play, more fans would help improve atmosphere.

Allegiant is state of the art, but that's about all it has going for it.

Product on the field obviously matters, but Medical school, potential tv advertising revenue probably matter more.

Give Bob Stoops a call. He took an XFL HC job this year so obviously he still has the desire to coach. I don’t know what the XFL pays but it can’t be too much. Yeah he’s been retired for a while but he’s only 62.

I bet Lon Kruger has or can get his number.

Late to the party today. Surprised Harper was given the green light given the price, but since he was, I am understand the move. A few thoughts…

1-I love that Harper is making the decision and there is not waste of time and money firm being hired. Doesn’t mean he will get it right, but at least he’s willing to put it all on him.

2-I am not surprised whatsoever that the players are upset. Arroyo is a very likeable guy. I’m sure most players liked playing for him. At the end of the day, though, the job didn’t get done. Can’t start 4-1 and lose 6 in a row (especially being uncompetitive in a lot of those).

3-Coaching candidates I don’t see happening
-Deion Sanders - has been offered Colorado and may get other P5 looks.
-Morgan Scalley. - HC in waiting and has some baggage (racial slurs, stereotypes).
-Gary Patterson - has resisted other opportunities to stay in Texas. I don’t see that changing any time soon. IF he wants to be a HC again, I could see Texas St maybe
-Rich Rodriguez. He let Harper go when he took over at Arizona so there was no overlap. His own baggage and age are working against him.

4-Realistic coaching candidates I could see
-Mike Stoops. Had some success at Arizona (which is a tough job). Harper was his director of football operations. He is 60 though, so age is working against him a little bit.

-Joe Klanderman - Kansas St DC. Harper‘s alma mater. He’s young, led the 14th ranked defense in the nation and playing in a championship game this weekend.

-Collin Klein - K St OC - pretty much see above though not as experienced and offense wasn’t as dynamic as the defense. Still put up 33pts a game though.

-Bryan Harsin -for reasons already mentioned.

-Alex Grinch - USC DC

- Garrett Riley - TCU OC

Will be interesting to see who’s targeted. Should give some insight as to what the budget is. Hopefully it’s similar, if not more, than the budget when Arroyo was hired.

Great post. Can confirm 2 of those names have been contacted multiple times. Oddly enough, neither of them are of the “needs D1 experience” group.

Bob Stoops could take any open P5 position that he wanted, one call and he’d have an offer. He’s not taking a call from UNLV.
