Stadium article 3/24/16

Would be a reach regardless of the situation. But i hear that the boosters are mostly in agreement of the need and for it to be a domed stadium. Where the arguments are starting is on how big this thing needs to be.

If that's the argument, it seems like you could design it in such a way that it accomodates 65000 now, but could be expanded to get to 80000 in the future as needed.

So Mark Davis was in town today to check out Sam Boyd for a possible place to hold Raiders games while the on campus stadium gets built. He was there along with TS and the UNLV Pres.

80 K seats may be way more than UNLV needs, but how likely would it be to cause a bidding ware between the Big12 and Pac12. UNLV would likely have the nicest stadium in either conference and definitely one of the biggest.
80K is just too much IMHO. Yes it would make us 3rd or 4th in size in the PAC 12 and Big 12 but 65K would also make us 4th in the PAC 12 just ahead of ASU who reduced their capacity down from 71K to 64K and 3rd in the Big 12 behind the whorns [100K] & Sooners [82K].

A state of the art, domed 65K stadium would be one of the best bowl stadiums too. Between the "Final Four" Bowls, it would be bigger than the Fiesta Bowl, but smaller than the Rose [92K], Orange [75K] & Sugar [73K]. I've been to bowl games in each of those stadiums and several of the 2nd tier Bowls like the Gator [76K], Peach [71K], Holiday [70K], Foster Farms [68.5K], Citrus [65K] & Outback [65K]. A state of the art 65K domed stadium in Las Vegas would put most of them to shame. Seriously, the Orange, Gator & Citrus are simply horrid stadiums.

65k and very nice > 80k and cheap. We're trying to make sure the Raiders leave the ghetto in Oakland.
Yup. The most important thing to the Raiders, and probably to the Casinos if they are smart, will be the number, size and quality of the luxury boxes.

IF the raiders come to LV and share a stadium with UNLV, I hope the stadium doesn't get branded with raiders logos all over. It will be on the UNLV campus and I would hope it has UNLV's name on it.

Give me 55K and pack em' in every game. I'd rather have fully sold out venue any day rather than chance lower occupancy numbers. Plus, sold out venues are less inexpensive (put the extra money into making it the most state of the art), noisier, and just more fun to be at.

I respectfully say > No thanks.

That would be penny wise and dollar foolish IMHO since 55K won't help us get into the PAC like 65K will. It would put us in the bottom half of the conference in stadium capacity with the conference already demanding that Stanfurd, Utah, WSU, etc expand their stadiums to over 60K.

It's not going to help move up the Bowl ladder like a 65K capacity stadium would. 55K would also put us in the lower tier of Bowl capacity.

It would never attract an NFL team.

The NFR would sell it out in a heartbeat.

It shouldn't be a problem. It's not at other multi-team stadiums now. Plus, all the way back to when the Raiders were in LA sharing USC's stadium, I don't recall any Raiders signs being up when USC was playing.

Interesting read. Some of the numbers I would peg as overly optimistic. However, the fact that UNLV uses the stadium for football for free is nice. I was surprised to see the numbers on hotel taxes. We are way below many major markets at 12% which means there is definitely room to grow. I guess that, aside from the missing funding model, the only real question is the makeup of the new CCSA.

Still didn't see who would actually own the stadium. Is the Sands corp. gonna own the stadium or will UNLV? Not sure where the ownership and distribution of profits was discussed. I saw the financial impact but not the net to UNLV. I'm not sure why since it is our land and only by UNLV being involved to they get that tax funding. Not sure we wouldn't being giving up too much.We should be profiting from it and use it to fund the university. I agree with CalVegas04's comment about it looking like we are playing in their stadium. I want it to be Rebel themed on the days we play their and for the world to know this is UNLV's stadium, atleast as much as it is the Raiders. They need us as much as we need them.

Interesting comment from Mark Davis, saying the Raiders aren't married to the UNLV site and other locations are being considered. Sounds like a power play comment.

With most signage in newer stadiums being digital it would be easy to change Raiders/UNLV logos all over and it would probably only occur a few times that both had home games the same weekend so there typically would be time to change any standard type signage for each team/fans.

You guys think they will be able to incorporate both the Raiders and UNLV color schemes, in a cool but classy way? It worries me that UNLV may not be represented well enough.

Also, who will own the stadium?

I asked about ownership in a different thread. I thought I read that the Sands would own the stadium which would make no sense since we own the land and putting up most the money. Haven't got a definite answer. As for switching between Rebels and Raiders, I would think a lot of programable LED boards could be used. Combine the theme is the concourse? Would want the world know it is UNLV's stadium (if it is)

David Beckham was at the meeting today showing support. Raiders/ Sands would put up 650 million and ask for 750 million in public money. The mayor was all for it but we know she has little to no power in this stuff. One preseason game would be held at Sam Boyd. They will meet next month to go over more details.

The CCSA will run the stadium. Who owns the CCSA? From page 81:
The receipts of all incremental tax revenue generated by the project shall be remitted quarterly to the Clark County Stadium Authority (established by the legislation) for the term of the lease (65 years) with the stadium developer
and
The Clark County Stadium Authority will remit the receipts of such revenue collected to the stadium developer. Developer may among other things use such proceeds to secure project debt, repay equity, repay debt, pay any operating costs, pay marketing costs and pay for maintenance and capital expenses related to the project.
and
The CCSA would be provided the necessary powers and authorities to enter into a long term lease and other agreements with Sands-Majestic (“Stadium Developer-Operator”)for the development and management of the proposed stadium project.
Does that answer your question?

Yup, Thanks Moses. The Sands Corp. & Davis, just as I suspected. UNLV gets to plays their games in the stadium for free and won't sharein any of the revenue generated outside of the UNLV football games. This is stupid. Why would we ever accept this deal. Kick Adelson to the curb and work the deal with Davis and keep control of the stadium. The Revenue generated could repay any extra notes needed and could fund UNLV for years to come.

One other thing- I believe Davis is sincere about bringing the Raiders here. Beckham, on the other hand, I think is a carpetbagger- he was only there to cynically use this meeting as leverage against Miami regarding his MLS franchise. MLS has already rejected LV as an expansion destination.

The Raiders asked Beckham to be at the meeting. I don't even think Beckham brought up MLS, he did bring up international soccer being played here tho.

Because we can't afford to build a stadium on our own. No money. Zero.

They have struggled procuring funds for a 30 million dollar practice facility.

Cliche warning......

Beggars can't be choosers.

Revenue from UNLV football games will belong to the school, I 'm sure I heard that question asked and answered, correct me if I'm wrong

Black goes very well with Scarlet and Grey. I think that poker table look will go well with the Raider and UNLV logos.

Of the site's on the map the land between Koval and Paradise is the only one that makes sense. Traffic can be mitigated (if the issue is serious enough) by a monorail extension to the airport, yes the cab companies would fight it, but traffics an issue now( one of the many reasons I moved to N. AZ), and they have to start working on the solutions. I certainly would not be happy with Cashman Field. 3 hours driving to see a game, Cashman site is a deal breaker for me, West on 215 maybe, but IKEA paid a ton for that Durango site and that was a couple of years ago.

I would not be the biggest fan of the stadium going up anywhere other than on UNLV's campus... I would still support building the stadium if put some where else but I wouldn't as happy about it. The cashman area is a dump. The area on sahara and the strip is okay but they would be next to the dump circus circus. Behind the Bally's and Paris hotels would be okay because they could connect it to the Linq... But UNLV's campus is still the best choice.
