LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV football head coach Barry Odom has a new contact that runs through 2028, Director of Athletics Erick Harper announced Friday. The updated terms include an additional year and future retention bonuses.

Odom, 47, became the 13th head coach in UNLV football history in December 2022. In his first season in Las Vegas he led the program to its most wins (9-5) since 1984, a first-place regular-season conference finish and the right to host the Rebels' first appearance in a Mountain West Championship game. UNLV then made its first bowl trip in a decade where it faced Kansas in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix.

"We are obviously thrilled about what Barry Odom and his staff did in year one leading Rebel football," said Harper. "The program is on an upward trajectory and we could not be more excited about him leading the way. Barry continues to be a man of his word, focusing on growing all phases of the program the right way. He is committed to his players, coaches and staff and with the newly expanded CFP he is laying a foundation that gives Rebel Football a chance to compete at the highest level. I look forward to working with Coach Odom for years to come."

"When I first met Coach Odom a little over a year ago, I shared our expectations for UNLV Football – including that we want our team to compete and win at a high level and be embedded in the incredible culture of our community," said UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield. "He's met many of those expectations after just one year. Coach Odom's exceptional work ethic, strong character, and commitment to success have been evident since day one, and I'm proud of the program he is building and the direction of Rebel Football under his leadership."

Last season, Odom became UNLV's first Mountain West Coach of the Year since 2000 and the program's first-ever finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award along with various other national coach of the year honors. The team also shattered records in the classroom, including the highest cumulative grade point average at 3.22 and boasting the first First Team Academic All-America honoree in program history.

"On behalf of our coaching staff and our football program I'd like to thank President Whitfield, the Board of Regents, and obviously Erick Harper for their sustained commitment not only to myself and our staff, but also to our entire football organization as we continue to grow and elevate our program to a national level," said Odom.

"I'm excited about the foundation we have built in the past 16 months and I certainly look forward to our strong future. I'm thankful for our staff and our student-athletes -- they are on a mission to win a championship. I'm also thankful for the tremendous support we receive from the UNLV community, its fans and business partners and the extraordinary city of Las Vegas as we build a program in which we can all be proud. Together, I'm confident that we will continue to move the program forward and have success."

Interesting that they haven't disclosed the terms. Isn't that info public as a a government employee?

Couple big time donors stepped up and donated so UNLV could extend him an additional 10 Years at $10mil a year with a $125mil buy out

Of course this is BS, but if it did happen we wouldn't have to worry about him getting poached
That would be the equivalent of getting your first real job and a decent paycheck. Say 60-70k, then going out and buying a Bugatti,

People have probably already seen it, saw it the other day but forgot to post it. Is this the new one?

The 47-year-old Odom receives a base salary of $400,000 each year. He will earn a total package of at last $1.75 million next season, matching his salary from last season and reportedly making him the highest-paid coach in the Mountain West. His total compensation rises to at least $2.4 million by 2028.

Yes, they increased the rate of $ it increases each year, the buyout, and the bonuses I think... the buyout is the biggest win, 5 million dollars next year

When have we had a football coach who immediately moved onto better things after leaving UNLV? Meyer to SMU to NFL in the mid 70’s?

If Odom gets poached, it’s going to be a big jump, imo, not going from UNLV to Boise or UNLV to Arkansas State. It’d be a jump to P5 and they ain’t gonna have trouble with a buyout.

He’s actually in a really good position right now. Even if UNLV is his safety net, it’s among the best in the conference. It’s like he’s playing with house money right now.

The buyout means zero if a major program wants him. The only way UNLV will be able to keep coach Odom, if he keeps improving the team, is if he truly wants to stay at UNLV and turn us into the next Boise State replacement!

A coach like Odom can bring thousands of extra visitors to Vegas. If these hotels and casinos see values in that then they should/need to invest. The golden goose is right here. Bald and bull riding crazy ass.

I think that’s the goal for all the non-power schools. Need to elevate, stabilize and then pick right.

It’s why a coaching staff, entire staff, can be critical. If you find success, can you stick with the same formula and keep that success? Most likely would happen with staff remaining and leading after a head departs. Pass it on.

Had UNLV done that with Tark instead of crucifying him … UNLV hoops would have been in a far different place right now. Tark until 2000, Grg (with a clear conscience) until 2015, Rice/Theus/Welch/insert whomever … right now.

You’ll skip beats because Tark was a legend, but I’d rather have a baseline philosophy that yielded success propagated with some tweaks here and there than start fresh and new.

The extension was entirely about an increased buyout. I understand that P5s can pay it, that's not the point I'm making. It's a Win for UNLV because 4 or 5 million dollars is alot of money to use for a new coach.
And yes, he's got a good thing here, one of the premier G5 setups in the Country, so he can and should be selective in the future about what that next move would be...

That's not the point of a buyout. Unless he really liked UNLV and gave us some crazy high number as the buyout to keep programs from sniffing around, 5 million is a solid chunk of change that will help us pay for another good coach and staff. That's like another million a year you can add to the pot you were already paying,

The Boyd's and the Ferittas group seems to be the most prominent groups that have supported UNLV the most, I could be wrong? Maybe UNLV can actively promotes their businesses when the visiting fans come to Vegas. Just an idea.

If UNLV offers a link to stay at these casinos when buying tickets online for out of state fans (ours and the opponents), that may be a win-win rules allowing it, of course. If they already do this then ignore my suggestion.

That may be how a relationship continues to develop.

Except there's so many hotels and rooms that it probably just doesn't matter to them. At best it's 5-10k fans in rooms, maybe 60% pick the hotel UNLV advertises, and a large portion of that was already going to choose their properties... considering what we want them to give in return to UNLV there's not a good return on investment. It's not like the choice was Holiday Inn or Marriott like in other cities, they're already coming and already likely staying at one of those properties

Not right away but it will eventually matters. As UNLV become more and more relevant, it will matters...a lot.

I agree, obviously we all hope he stays, but if he leaves, it’s because we have another good year. If we have back to back good years and have good players coming in and now we have a chunk of cash to pay replacement Coach, we should be able to get somebody pretty decent instead of having to start over.

It feels like this was an extension to set up the next one. It pretty much just refreshed the current contract and terms. An act of good faith to reward Odom for a great first year. It also protects us from poaching, at least to a G5, and again gives us a niece chunk of change if he does get poached for the next coach.

But I think if he has a good year this year too we see a more substantial contract extension.

I think they want to wait until hopefully get a full year with even better support/attendance to help finance a bigger pay bump.
