What kind of hire? With the kind of money we supposedly offered. Take it in that context.
That option... is called a double. Now if it was with 0 or 2 outs, then it's a grab-some-bench double.Where's the option for we hit one in the gap for a double but tried to stretch it to a triple and got thrown out?

To me, the question can only be based on the press conference.... how people react to the hire. If it’s asking if he will do ok, poor, or great, so tough to assess when there’s no HC experience.Where's the option for we hit one in the gap for a double but tried to stretch it to a triple and got thrown out?

I’m hoping he held out awhile to ensure above average pay for assistants. That’s where the meat is.
That’s a strike out. What about a weak ground out, pop up? It’s not like every play in baseball is a positive, in fact, about 70% of them aren’t. The examples you use say no matter what, it’s a positive.Whoever said a single it's completely delusional. Plus whoever said a double is extremely skeptical. A single is picking the DB coach at Texas St.
No reasonable person would give this hire as a single. I want them to tell me what a double would mean a triple a homerun and a grand slam with what I stated before with the money we offered what we could get. That’s a strike out. So you are saying there’s no way he will be anything but positive?
Have you even looked at the history of UNLV football?
I hate to break it to you, but there is a possibility he will he in the Hauck/Sanford zip code. I don’t think so but to dismiss it as a possibility given the entire history of UNLV football seems ...
U have to start somewhere and that's why u hire a staff. U cant do everything.I gave him a double because:
1. No head coaching exp.
2. All history is Offense. Not a defensive minded coach.

I voted single- as Joe said a single is still positive especially considering all the strikeouts we've had. I just thought we could do better with this hire given the new facilities. Maybe my expectations were unreasonable.
Does Arroyo's resume scream that he's so much better than the Mike Sanford hire? Yeah we upgraded from Sanchez but big whoop there.
Let's see who the other 3 MWC teams end up with? I thought we'd be one of the more attractive jobs in the conference going forward but this hire tells me UNLV isn't there. I guess I'm unreasonable and I need to accept that UNLV's still a FBS bottom feeder.
I guess my question would be what do you think the facility brings?
By that I mean, say Arroyo and Sanford are essentially equal.
If Sanford had competitive facilities back then would he have had better results?
He was really close year 4. That team lost three games in the final 5 minutes. Damn near won 8 games. He beat two P5 schools that year. He won five his final year as well.
Would the recruiting benefits of the facility got him over the hump? Speculative, I know.
I get the thought this is more of same. But by saying that, doesn't it discount the potential impact of the facility completely?
Either that 30 million dollar building matters or somebody flushed 30 million down a toilet.
Not saying Arroyo is a great hire. But he now has some advantages previous coaches didn't...
Yes, I liked the Sanford hire- probably more than most around here. I was excited when he came in and he was pretty close to having UNLV competitive in a MWC that was much better then vs now. I think if he had the new facilities and was coaching here after BYU, Utah, TCU, (and Kaepernick) all left he would have won.
I feel similar about Arroyo- I have some excitement and I do believe he can win here but I'm on the opposite side Rebelluv- I think anyone that considers this a homerun/grand slam is crazy. I think we could have made type of hire with SBS and Lied as our facilities. This looks like a typical UNLV hire to me. Arroyo wants to be a HC and this is probably the only FBS shot he's been offered so he takes it. Let's hope it works out.

Yeah, but don't you think if he puts in another season or two of high powered offense there at Oregon that a much better opportunity comes along? To just grab the first so-so program that comes calling doesn't say much for him, no?

Maybe, but considering Oregon fans were already calling for his head this year I don’t think another 2 years is guaranteed. They’re losing a lot on that line in addition to a first round QB. They take a step back and he’s probably the one getting axed. Then he’s out looking for an OC job and it won’t be high profile. Looking at his resume he knows when it’s time to move on. I don’t mean to knock him but it seems he’s done a good job at moving around.
The positives and negatives of both situations. He has moved a lot, but assistants work on 2 year contracts so its not uncommon to have a lot of stops before finally getting a HC gig. Matt Canada has been an OC at like 9 different stops. Graham Harrell is pretty young in his coaching career and he's rumored with Texas. That would already be his third stop I think.
There are also guys like Scalley, who might coach their entire career at one stop if he does in fact take over for Whittingham and keeps it rolling.
With Sanford there was always the question of whether Mike or Urban was pulling the strings on offense at Utah. Don't think there's a question here. But, yeah, staff is vital, discipline non-negotiable. And, please, bring in some speed!Walk. Echos of Sanford. I'll say more after he pulls his staff on board. I am not worried about recruiting. More talent is always good but we have had issues with bone head play from some our better players, lack of discipline and truly crappy game time coaching. IMHO
I will, however, remain optimistic.....
