NIT: Unlv vs Princeton discussion

I think UNLV beats Princeton. Hope Boone is back, he will be needed but I think either way we make it to a second game

This reeks like AF all over who we struggle terribly with more often than not. It will come down to who is healthy and who is playing. Princeton can shoot it lights out

UNLV and Princeton are the last two teams to have a 3pt in every game since 86-87 season introduction.

Game will be played with experimental rules for time outs and FIBA size lane.

Anyone who is comparing Princeton to AFA obviously is not thinking of the modern Princeton squad.

I have only seen them twice this year, but they are incredibly offensively efficient, and most of their offensive action is run off the high pick and roll. Xavian Lee is as good as anyone at creating his own shot in isolated one on one situations. Can finish with either hand, has super tight handles, and will pull up and shoot the three if you try to go under a screen or play off him. Their front court is small 6'6/6'7/6'4 but they all shoot above 35% from 3, and are comfortable with catch and shoot, pick and pop, or quick shots of the pick action. They are 311th in pace and 83rd in ppg. I honestly believe any of their top 4 starters would have probably started or got really substantial minutes for us, though Lee is the primary ball handler he could definitely coexist with a good point. They're also not a bad defensive squad, if undersized (ORTG of 15, DRTG of 96). They also have excellent basketball IQ across the board.

For us to win we're going to have to really attack the cup and get them into foul trouble. Princeton only goes 7 deep, and we're going to have to take good care of the ball and play really good on-ball defense. Our length should be a real advantage and we'll have to make sure we keep them off the glass--I don't think they've played anyone with our size--St. Joe's was probably the closest and they did take a road L there.

I really hate playing teams like Princeton. So easy to go in underestimating and then get your socks blown off. Not excited for this matchup.

The flip side to the argument is Princeton wanted a at large bid and don't show up the same way. We're excited to be in any tournament I guess and maybe they fall into the same first round struggles like UNM had last year when they thought they'd be a tournament team

i have seen a total of about 6 games sober watching our team play.

it will all come down to Malibu Boone showing up (f Apple and auto correct)..

this guy gets a DUI and misses the first game, misses the last game with a hurt ankle. The guy has single handedly f’d up the entire season.

he can do Kruger a solid and win the team a game. Gets Kruger an extension or not show up.

hope the team plays with heart.

That’s actually a good reliable car
Yes it and that is what $15K will get you, old reliable Betsy.

It makes them sound cheap they may have been better off with nothing. It's like saying if you take us to the NIT you and your family get a comp to the Circus Circus buffet.

KK gets no extension until he has UNLV in NCAA next year, if he cant do that, he gets CANNED!

Since UNLV is a veteran team, two ways on the NIT, they want to continue to play or they come out and get beat and fly home to Vegas, it's that simple. Princeton beat Rutgers and Hofstra, they can score, should be interesting game, but UNLV should dominate down low?

It's not exactly a performance based bonus that I'd want to encourage him shooting for imho, I'm surprised there's a non-NCAA post-season bonus at all.

The Princeton offense worries me especially with our young learning on the job coach. We have played well against AFA (one game) but I’m definitely not equating AFA to Princeton. We’ve shown we can defend the 3 very well and have a very stingy defense. Playing a slower game also is not a problem for UNLV. We should be strong on the inside and hold an advantage there. Pound the ball down low and play an inside-out game, bring out A-game defense and limit our 3-pt attempts and we have a fair shot. What worries me most is the last 10 min of the game assuming the game is still up for grabs. CKK and the players get tight and tend to get away from what got them thru the first 30 min. It sure would be nice to see this team win a couple in the NIT and show some promise for the future.

This is the exact same Princeton team that went to the sweet 16 last year. Theyre disappointed that they didnt get into the dance. TBD how that affects their mindsets.

With a healthy team, we might be able to compete. ESPN is probably right. We lose by 16 or so.

The Princeton offense worries me
As long as you mean their offensive acumen, and not that they're running the traditional Pete Carril Princeton offense, I agree. They're going to run a version of offense that looks a lot like ours but with more motion and better shooters based a lot out of high pick and rolls trying to get switches for their excellent PG, Driving off the roll and kicking wing, and some screen back concepts where the high screen setter shows pick and pop but actually flexes out to the wing to screen the wing defender and get the wing player a catch and shoot.

AFA actually runs a version of the 'Princeton Offense'. So comparing Princeton's offense to the Princeton Offense can be confusing.

I also think we'll have a hard time trading buckets with them if we try to run 20 seconds of clock because of how well they shoot the ball across the entire team (they shoot 36% from 3 as a team, we have a single guy that shot 36% or better--and they shoot a lot of 3s. 57th overall in attempted 3pfg. They also have the fewest Turnover per game in the country and commit almost the fewest fouls (3rd fewest over all). Getting into a slow down game with them isn't good for us at all.

Yeah, Im interested to see if going to the NIT and losing in first game ending on 3 game skid vs good teams leaves UNLV/Harper reconsidering what he plans to do. Im not sure that just getting one of the last few invites for the NIT after 6 teams declined is enough to say he definitely should stay. I guess NIT is progress, but its like celebrating losing money at the Casino but getting a free drink..

I am too. I guess it shows how bad we have been. "Please just get us into the NIT." And for the first time in a decade we are in the "postseason."

Lee, Pierce, and Alloco are the three guards that score. It will be like playing CSU or NM but with smaller Lee who is 6'3 but only 175 or so matched up on DJ. Pierce is 6'7 and avg double figures. If we are healthy, we should win but Hicks, Nowell, Cottrell will have to step up if Boone and Whaley's ankles are still banged up.

A bonus for getting to the NIT?

I’ll bet that hurts their chances more than it helps. Seems to happen often where a team that just missed out on the tournament no-shows for the NIT that they have no interest in.

Clemson cost me money last year because of that. I guess that’s what I deserve for using their ML in a parlay to creep up the odds.

Edit: RU also ran into that problem as a 1 seed last year. I think the teams that just missed out are more likely to not care than be pissed off.

it’s pretty sad, shows you the school’s actual standard.
Is it a bonus set by the school or by that thankfully gone blowhard Desiree Reed-Francis? Go on her web page at Missouri and she takes credit for everything at UNLV. According to her she is responsible for the new football facility, the stadium, $60 million donation drive, Allegiant stadium, etc. She even claims responsibility for the $8 million James Baumberger estate gift for UNLV basketball. I guess Tony Sanchez had nothing to do with the funds UNLV got for the new training facility? Now on she goes to Arizona where even the village idiot couldn't make things any worse!
