NIT: Unlv vs Princeton discussion

I remember when UNLV went to the NIT under Rollie and there was like 5 people in the Mack.
Going to the NIT in 1993 or whatever is one thing, but in 2024 when UNLV hasn't sniffed the postseason in almost 11 years, people should be at least a little happy we made a step or two.

I remember reading Tark's autobiography years ago and he had an anecdote where he talked about the UNLV fans chanting "NIT! NIT! NIT!" in one of his first few seasons here because people were so happy to make the postseason for once.

I believe the people who are bummed about the NIT are the ones who are convinced CKK will never be more than a mediocre coach. The NIT just extends the inevitable for one more year.

I'm bummed about the NIT because if we had just taken care of business against 3 bad teams we'd probably be where CSU is right now. We don't have late collapses against USU, UNR, and CSU then we're probably a 5-7 seed and win the conference outright, and that likely means more wins since we won't have to face SDSU in the first round. I don't think it's a great goal to set annually, but I'll take post-season basketball right now any way I can get it. If this is a stepping stone to better things--teaching the kids about the pace of a post-season tournament, getting used to travel, extra practices, etc then I'm fine. If it's the new metric people want to use to judge a successful season then I'm not fine with it. I feel like NIT should be a 'down' year where we have problems, but maybe I'm living too far in the past again.

I don't anyone thinks this should be the standard. Is the school trying to celebrate it? Sure, but it is their job to try to build hype for the program and keep up interest.

It is an objective indicator that this is the best season in a while. We haven't qualified for a NIT in 13 years. Is that sad? Yes. Should we still be bummed? Yes. But that doesn't mean that there hasn't been progress which is the silver lining. And we get more hoops this year, against Quad 2 level teams. So at least there is that.

Didn't mean to come across as a Debbie Downer, was just trying to illustrate that there was more than one reason that people might be disappointed in the NIT.

I'm with you. It does hammer home the fact that those head scratching losses hurt the cause. It would be a little different if we "overachieve" to make the NIT, instead of disappointed to get the consolidation prize. We have had years in recent memory, say even last season, where it felt that we didn't have anything close to a tournament team, where the NIT would have felt like more of an achievement. This year our ability to compete against top teams definitely felt like we let the real tourney slip away.

Nobody cares about the NIT. I don't. Well it was an OK season but only in the context if we build on it. Which I'm not sure Kruger can do. I mean if he plans on keeping this roster together and only has 2-3 open spots, I see us right back in the same place next year. We gotta dump some of these guys and replace with better talent.

Exactly!

The pressure he will be under to pick 2-3 guys who are sure fire players will be too much. He has not put a solid roster together yet, and he is starting this off season off incorrectly if he keeps some of these same “dead” weight guys and just adds a few players. Kevin needs to go and I hope Harper sees this!

Back at that time the NIT was a much bigger deal than it is now.

Princeton runs similar to my AF team but with more size. Good luck.

Mind if I ask, is Ka. Boone full up for this game? Saw only 9 min and 1 min in last two games. I noticed this when at the tournament. Hope he ok. Rick

Alright, Lurod left and Kalib is also gone....what next? Time to play what is best: DJ, Hicks, Whaley together..can win the Nit. Let's do this boys!

That was the first monumentally tiny crowd I’ve ever seen at the Mack. Vs USC. And Burt Harris, a tiny bowling ball freshman PG, killed us. Either that or he didn’t kill us and I was just amazed that somebody so tiny and bulky could play …

Why did we actually qualify? So it’s less of “earned an NIT bid” and more of “we need somebody to fill spots, will you take one?”

So let’s keep it a little more real.

17 teams said no.

Again, it’s like paying for a boulder highway hooker and bragging to your friends about bagging a hottie over the weekend.

Yes and no, the NIT needed to meet its p6 requirements to fill the tournament so they had to run down the list of teams in the p6 until someone said yes. If we were in a p6 conference, I’d agree with your point but the NIT really boxed itself in with the new selection criteria.

Ultimately, we really need to get out of this WACesque conference. There’s going to be new tournaments where players are paid winnings etc. and we’re going to be kept out of that no matter what. NIT is soon to be a relic and fading into the background in terms of tournament prestige.

I am hoping we win because I work in Providence so I will go to that game for sure.
Well that’s out, but Chestnut Hill is only an hour from Providence so if the Rebs can pull it off you can see them play at BC.

I would even consider taking the train up there for the game, and of course then looms the possibility of Seton Hall at the Rock which is also within a reasonable distance for me. But one step at a time.

Yeah I didn’t even realize they were playing BC that works well too Chestnut Hill is about 45 minutes from my house. UNLV just needs to take care of business.

We deserved to be in over a few of the teams on that list.

As referenced above. Only St. Bonny and Memphis on this list was an at large bid. All of the other were autobids that were turned down. The p5 and the Big East all get 2 autobids and home court advantage. The first 4 out also get home court advantage. The last 4 teams in are playing the 1 seeds. We are part of the last 8 in though.

Does it really matter? The only people who care about the NIT are coaches who get post season bonuses and fans of teams involved. Celebrating making the NIT is like losing money at the Casino but being excited for the comped meal..It's a disappointment and while winning it would be accomplishment, does losing 3 straight vs good teams highlight progress or show the smoke and mirror show we have been on this season

No one is celebrating the NIT as if we have made it. It is an object proof that we have improved though.

We haven't lost to Princeton just yet. And we did take SDSU the arguably best team in the league without Kalib to OT. Did much better than Utah State did. Both teams were at full strength for those keeping track. Not trying to celebrate close losses. I was pissed and I still am. But some context there should be fair.

The smoke and mirror that is actually happening is trying to shit on the good things that have happened, pretending like they don't exist. There has been bad, awful things this year which is totally fair. There have also been good things, really better than we have had in years. This conference may be over rated, but it doesn't suck. CSU stomping ACC's 3rd place team is something.

We aren't good enough yet. I think we all agree. We can debate how close we are. That's fair.

Still rooting for us tonight. Playing a guard heavy team without our best guard/wing defender. Hopefully we show out.

SDSU was not the best team in the league. They are incredibly flawed and run as Ledee does. They dont have an offense and are worse shooters than we are, thats why we were able to stay with them despite not having Boone.

You've been arguing that the conference was better than it was all season. Obviously the committee agreed that it wasn't. Yes, they took 6 teams, but 2 play-ins and the discussion of UNM only getting a bid because they won the tournament.
Utah St. has a whole lot of other reasons contributing to their play in the tournament. Their coach is shopping for homes in Seattle and calling around for assistants to join him. they knew they were in and it showed in their play in both games.
The bottom 4 of the conference were just bad and we got lucky that we played each one twice. Im not saying Im not rooting for them tonight, I hope we win the whole thing since we are in it. Im just not certain its changed anything in my mind that the program has turned any corner and that making the NIT is a sign that we will defiantly make the biggest step next season.

Im looking at Princeton wins they squeaked out some wins against some really bad teams. We should be able to win going away. Just as long as they are focused. We are missing possibly 2 starters. Boone and for sure Rod. Fouls might get us into trouble.

I think it gets a lot harder if Boone isnt able to go. Thats 2 starters we would be without. Im just not sure thinking DTJ will go for 30 points and Webster will score 13 again will create a winning formula. The one plus side is they arent particularly large inside and maybe Jones will be able to provide rebounds and Whaley will be able to push them around. But they are incredibly experienced at their starting 5 and its not like we didnt squeak out our fair share of close wins vs bad teams...

If you call out that we played the bottom four twice each, don't forget to give credit for where it is due since UNLV also played and beat the MWC champion New Mexico twice.

Ledee isn't gonna get the whistle in the NCAAs like he did in the MWC. He can literally maul someone. No foul. But if you so much as breathe on him. Also a foul.
Which has always been a problem for MWC teams in the tournament. But its especially a problem for them as he averages almost 1/3 of their points per game and gets to the foul line at almost 9 attempts per game.

He initiates a lot of contact which is bs

“Can’t wait” as in you’ll likely be dead before that happens?
I was thinking of being frozen, and they can thaw me out when UNLV gets there just like on Futurama!

This game feels like a joke to me without Rodriguez and Boone and the changes with the different rules/court. UNLV shouldn't have accepted the invite.

At least they are coming out with some energy and urgency like they want to be playing the game.
