Mullen

I’ve mentioned this for a while. He’s earning a raise/promotion!
I said it another post but Harper is the guy I wanted in the AD chair to handle this type of “hectic” situation. Coach leaves suddenly and the AD pivots like a pro and has a good list of replacement names to go through. Now I don’t know if he gets it done with Mullen or not and even if he doesn’t get him, Harper is the guy you need in moments like these!

Someone realized that the only way to not lose your coach to 7 million dollar a year contract is to go all in now to not get left behind... now the time, because you've only got a few years
Now follow suit with a basketball coach that garners this type of reputation and instant support/credibility.

Go all out and bring coach Dean Smith back from Valhalla!

Allowed? Lol
He’s not on a leash!
While I would not celebrate Mullen until the ink is dry on the contract, I hope that you guys triple Harper's contract salary and contract length, regardless of who you hire for football. I agree that a leash is not a good solution. A cost effective alternative would be an ankle tracker and a a 24 team of chaperones, when he visits within 100 miles of a Big 10 or SEC school that needs to hire a new AD.

I remember after Utah beat BYU and was invited to that bowl game with Pittsburgh. We Utah fans were very disappointed that Urban Meyer left for Florida. However, over the years, he did many things to help the Kyle Whittingham, after Kyle became the Utah head coach. I don't have any insider information on college football. However, I believe that Odom told Mullen some good things about UNLV behind the scenes for Mullen to seriously consider the job. If you hit the grand slam home run and hire Mullen, I believe that Meyer would maintain contact. Who knows? Maybe Meyer even acts as a paid consultant for the UNLV program.

Mullen had a really bad time at Fla. Hope he's had time to recharge.

"Dan Mullen's tenure at Florida ultimately failed due to a combination of factors including declining recruiting, a perceived lack of accountability, excessive loyalty to underperforming assistant coaches, particularly defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, and a failure to adapt and address mounting issues as the team's performance significantly dropped, leading to a loss of confidence from both players and fans.

Key points about Mullen's downfall at Florida:
  • Poor Recruiting:
Critics pointed to Mullen not consistently securing top talent, which impacted the team's overall competitiveness on the field.

  • Defensive Struggles:
The Gators' defense, particularly under Todd Grantham, was consistently criticized for poor performance, yet Mullen was reluctant to make changes.

  • Lack of Accountability:
Mullen was perceived as not taking enough responsibility for the team's declining performance and failing to address key issues effectively.

  • Coaching Staff Loyalty:
Some saw Mullen's unwavering loyalty to certain assistants, even when they were not performing well, as a major contributing factor.

  • Negative Attitude:
Mullen's demeanor and perceived lack of adaptability to changing situations were seen as detrimental to team morale." AI search.

You should see some of the feelings about Bryan Harsin.

  • Supporters
Some players defended Harsin on social media, calling him a great coach who wanted to win.

  • Critics
Others criticized Harsin, describing him as someone who treated players poorly, lacked empathy, and ran off many of his best players. One former defensive lineman posted on Instagram that Harsin treated players "like dogs".

  • Overall
A source with direct knowledge of the program described Harsin's program as "toxic" and "dysfunctional".

You hope guys learn from past jobs. Odom obviously did.

Similiar things were written about him. His recruiting in particular was heavily criticized.

The Gator board's biggest complaints are not bringing in top recruits (SEC standards) and feeling like he "quit" on the team in the final year. Otherwise they like him, especially the offense. Compare to some other higher profile coaches we were looking at, that's a glowing statement about him.

Pretty much any former HC is going to have something negative on their resume. Was actually reading an article about the NC job and how he would be a perfect fit if he were “all in”. If this comes to fruition, hoping that he will have had plenty of time to recharge the batteries and be ready to go once again. If he has, the we may have, as crazy as it sounds, actually upgraded. Lots of “ifs” and “maybes” for that to be true though. Makes me a little nervous that nothing has been announced yet though. Needs to get done by tomorrow or we may be reliving the Pitino saga (with obvious differences of course).

Look at what people thought about Jesus.

He won 10, 11, 8 games, had 1 bad season where recruiting dropped off. He had incredible years at Miss St. He just came at a time where Saban and O and Kirby Smart were really hitting recruiting well.

The problem at Florida for Mullen are the insane expectations there. He did well by regular standards but they expected Urban Meyer 2.0 especially with his success at MSU.

At Florida they expect championships and winning almost all of your games. Once they experienced that pinnacle of CFB during the Tebow era, they were never going to be the same program. That’s why Sunbelt Billy gets roasted daily on the gator board.

Ladies and gents, this story might have some wings. Reached out to some of my former colleagues at a big national media firm (those who know, will know). They reached out to Mullen's people for a comment while building a story. They were told, "no comment." This leaves me to believe there is something there, other wise they would have said no. Hopefully they're in the middle of intense talks.
It is reported that Mullen and unlv are going over what the nil package looks like. This means Mullen is very serious and will get the best talent available.

Like I said, if this comes to fruition, we’re going to witness the Tark era version of football. I believe this type of move will signal to the Big12 that we mean business.

100% this.

I'm still in the camp that the Big12 is a pipe dream.

But you're correct, if nothing else this signals UNLV is serious about trying to build it's brand and remain competitive.

If new booster money doesn't start to trickle in after Odom's success and UNLV going all in on Mullen, I'm not sure it ever will.

It might very well be a pipe dream. But if what we needed was to show a commitment to football; well we’re doing it with this.

I don't know if Mullen has real interest if he believes that we are staying in the MW for the long term. Or maybe he thinks he can parlay this into a better contract in 1-2 years as well.

Either way, we need this buyout to be more substantial. Ideally the entire worth of the base contract like it tradition.

This sheds some light on the NIL so they are talking revenue sharing with players as well as doubling our current NIL budget. I assume some people must be stepping up behind the scenes? I can't imagine the school being able to offer a $4MM+ salary, double the NIL and offer revenue share?
