Odom was a great hire here!
None of us even mentioned him as a candidate before he was picked. He put us on the map right away and his body of work here showed the world that UNLV was not a “coaching graveyard” but a sleeping giant that needed a shot in the arm. He did that and now after disappointment a week ago has now turned into Dan Mullen! UNLV Football has arrived nationally now and I know the guy has just been named the HC.

My question is…

Is Dan Mullen an even better hire than Odom could’ve been?

Thoughts…

Coached the #1 team in the country and a couple of the best programs, at the time, in the SEC. Odom couldn’t even beat BSU in 3 attempts. Objectively better hire IMO.

If you side by side their incoming resumes, it’s not close.

If 3 years ago, the finalists were Mullen and Odom, it would be a landslide choice.

Now Odom got the job done in a huge way on the field, we have to see what Mullen does. But there’s no reason for anything but jubilation at this point, imo.

But I’ve said this before … fit is absolutely important … good coaches can lose when there’s a bad fit, mediocre coaches can win when there’s a good fit … it comes down to unity, a oneness, a same page ….. I really do think that part of it is critical.

Yes. Dan Mullen is a better coaching hire.

I just posted this on another thread:

What I like about this hire, even more than him being a good coach, is it seems like Mullen has a vision for what UNLV could become in college football and what it needs to do to get there and the process has already started with the agreement for revenue sharing with players, increased NIL commitment, etc.

As good as Odom was, and the potential he saw in UNLV, I don't think he would have had enough pull to make big changes like that.

What I like about this hire ….

Is that UNLV FINALLY proved to me that they are actually serious!

They weren’t serious, I knew it, you knew it, we all knew it … and as a fan that sucks …. Because all you want is all out effort to be the best, whether you make it or not ….

He recently hired an NIL agent. It might not be his "choice."
That was going to happen regardless on who our HC was. Hopefully the NIL money will compete with the other suitors. Being a local d and having a Bigger name HC (sorry Odom)maybe he stays. Unless we can upgrade from him. I think he has a chance to be special.

UNLV was an impossible job to have before 2020. Not sure if "coaching graveyard" is the right term more than it's just a function of having nothing desirable to offer recruits (world-class stadium, complex) and as a result were stuck hiring from a pool of candidates that had no better coaching options themselves. I mean, many have gone on to be head coaches again (Sanford, Hauck, Sanchez) after UNLV just to do what they did again before here (Hauck, FCS) or go to other programs and still achieve limited success (Sanford-Indiana St, Sanchez-New Mex St). This is more telling of their head coaching ability than anything UNLV ever did to them. UNLV didn't put them in a graveyard. Their talent and ability charted their course. If Odom was hired a decade ago, he likely fails. He knows this. That's why his caliber never applied prior. Odom is no dummy. He knew the program (post 2020) was an easy sell (relative to the MWC) and that if he can just beat who he's supposed to, he will be exalted back up to the P4 and get paid. He entered here thanking his lucky stars that Arroyo screwed it up and didn't claim the easy glory. There are dozens out there that could have achieved what Odom did here when you think about it.

Coaching graveyard in the sense that can’t name many that left here like Odom did, leave for a better job at a major program. The losing here was real for decades. So in that sense I said coaching graveyard. Now not so much is the new public perception.

And it was!

Makes you think, with football and basketball …. Look at how many hires were ridiculously small time thinking … at the time, it doesn’t fully hit you. When you make back to back (apparent) big time hires, it really shines a light on how fd up this administration has been and for how long.

Make similar moves in the 90’s, we are laughing at TCU and/or Utah for wanting to step into our conference.

Just saying, negligence and laziness can have a hefty price tag.

Remember Hamdick and Harter? Clowns after clowns

I’m elated over this hire. It shows a commitment to our future. I think fan support this year at some of the bigger games showed what our potential could be with a winning program.

I’m just curious, what would be a comparable basketball coach hire to Dan Mullen? Just for comparison purposes.

Hopefully in 5 years we all look back and say this is the HIRE that changed us forever!! Way too much to work with after the Stadium and Fertitta complex were completed not to compete at a BIGGER much BIGGER level. i hear everyone talking about the 2. With no UNLV affiliation .

Probably more akin to hiring McDermott. Winning resume, if they weren't in same conference as Marquette and UCONN he might get more attention, gets you pretty decent results and has had some good players around him. Doesn't necessarily meet the criteria of media guy, That might be like hiring a Jay Wright.

Mullen looks like a better hire but it’s really hard to say that with all Odom was able to do here. I believe Barry had us on track for long term success but It’s possible UNLV’s ceiling is even higher under Mullen now.

Would you rather have Mullen now or a year 3 of Odom? It’s risky and there’s a lot of unknowns but I’m leaning towards Mullen being able to take the program to new heights.

If Mullen plans to stay longer and see it through then Mullen everyday all day long. But if he is just a 2 year and gone then probably rather have Odom because of the team that was slated to come in. Although that could change depending on what Mullen can keep/bring in.
