Selection Sunday

If it were held today SDSU, USU, NEV, and Boise all get in. The rest are on the outside. Interestingly, the win against NM raised our NET by 2 places and dropped them by 4 places. Too early for predictions or deciding must-win games except for the teams below us are pretty much must-win for us at home and away. ( this is because those losses would drop us more than a win gets us back) If we drop into the 60s (two losses without an intervening win) it would be really difficult to get back to the mid-forties where a team needs to be for selection.

Kruger

How come he gets a free pass on the weak schedule he put together? This board was all over Marvin Menzies for playing weak schedules. In my opinion Kruger so far has been the worst recruiting head coach in UNLV history. He brings in nothing but transfers and the majority of those are not that highly ranked, thought of, and one dimensional. Additionally, because of this philosophy we have a new team each year. His solution to lack of recruiting is to play a weak schedule and get 20 wins. Recruiting really needs to pick up.

RPI #22

Moving in the right direction.

CBS RPI 1/8

Four MWC in top 22.
UNM falls to #47.

Our losses are to #11, #67, and #144.

Sidebar: WTF is up with the Dons? Their December is a head-scratcher. On one hand they beat us, crushed #25 ASU by 37, and lost by 2 to #9 Zags. Also, they lost at home to UT Arlington, then got drubbed by both Santa Clara and USD.

Keshon Gilbert pulled off iconic Larry Johnson move

Did you all see the Keshon Gilbert move that was similar to Larry Johnson's iconic play in the 1990 national championship game? It gave me chills! The play began with about 17:40 left in the second half.

In this video it was about the 1:37 mark. Let me know what you think.

A little bit of a different vibe

This doesn’t mean it’ll translate to some outstanding success …

But this is the first time since Robinson that I’ve heard there is a pretty good consensus at UNLV about the football staff. Obviously, with the last few, they were all first time HC or not a ton of experience, UNLV was a step up for all of them (since Robinson).

I’m being told everyone is excited, there’s a professionalism and a certain way about his early construction and activity that has everyone excited.

Line ‘em up: Predictions and Game Thread At UNM

Not going to toss out a prediction just yet, I want the week to unfold. UNM COULD have one of those letdown games at Fresno. Fresno is awful, yes the game is there - the Lobos are ranked and undefeated (haven’t played anybody much either)… and the Lobos have to be looking forward to getting back to home, ranked, undefeated, in front of a sold out Pit crowd.

UNLV has a chance to lick some wounds, rest up a bit, try to sharpen their focus. Coaches will get a better look at the Lobos and have a chance to devise a good game plan (doesn’t always matter, players go off script early and often sometimes). I think the mental preparation in this one will be key. They won’t be afraid, they know the score. But they have not played before a raucous crowd as a team before. The part that worries me the most might be that Gilbert looks shaken and that’s been without pressure. Can’t have a primary ball handler rattled and expect to pull off an upset.

UNM has seen enough of UNLV to know that if they are aggressive, they can get to the O boards. Also, they get to the line quite a bit. UNLV’s best shot might be secure blocking out (can lead to fouls) and attacking the rim as much as they can, even if it’s without some early success. Would like to force their bigs to play with some caution.

But one thing I know, we’ve all seen it before with teams … if you can consistently pressure the perimeter, you can take out a crowd, you can stay in a game, not only can you steal the game but you can win it outright … if you maintain the 40 minutes.

I’m looking forward to it. It’s the first time this season everything is stacked against the Rebels. How do they respond?

Again, UNM is not a great team, they’ve fattened up on holiday creampuffs as well, but they’re a good team. I DO NOT want them dropping the game at Fresno. I don’t like playing teams coming off a loss, much less their first loss, especially when they’ll have strong support.

Review Journal headlines!

Last week, when the Rebs got beat by San Diego St we got FULL front page headlines. The brass at the RJ was delighted . Today , after a HUGE win against ranked New Mexico we get front page crickets . Amazing… a little blip of a statement saying our game was past press time. Game was over before nine o’clock. The RJ head honchos all need to move along. This subtle anti UNLV conspiracy has been going on way too long.

Recruiting

I know that we are bringing in some speed on offense even with getting a new OC. Also, sounds like our O-Line coach is a step up from where we’ve been. Hope he can make us more formidable.

Besides those announced on the first signing day, we have (for now) the QB announced. We also have a few commits who can’t officially sign yet (one of those is the speed I’m referring to).

I think we end up middle of the MWC this first season but better than that moving forward.
