15 - no walk-on's

I'm not sure if this is common knowledge or not.

As part of the House vs. Ncaa lawsuit that started revenue sharing there is a change in roster size for Men's BB (already in place for women's) . Starting this season instead of a 13 man roster there will be a 15 man roster allowed with zero walk-ons ( non-scholarship players ) allowed.

The final decision to implement this was expected last Monday. Didn't happen, but it's expected very soon.

MWC & PAC Mediation Discussion for Poaching & Exit Fees

We've all heard that the Pac and MWC have discussed going into Mediation over the Poaching and Exit fees. There hasn't been much said since. However, it does appear that both the Pac and MWC as of yesterday March 14th, 2025 have both filed for a "motion to Stay Proceedings in California" regarding mediation. Looks like this will drag on for a while.

“Today, at the request of the Mountain West Conference, the Pac-12 has agreed to file a mutual 60-day order to stay in the case to discuss mediation options,” the Pac-12 said in a statement. “It is important to state that we are in the early stages; no mediation dates have been set, and mediation is still uncertain. The Pac-12 remains confident in our position that the Poaching Penalty will be declared invalid and is committed to defending our stance.”

So, it appears we now have to wait on the courts to approve this. Once approved they have 60 days to see if they can come to some mutual agreement. It doesn't mean they will and it could just go back to the court. From the Pac's stated position above they think the the poaching penalty is invalid. I'm not sure if they are serious with this mediation.

Hopefully the article isn't firewalled for you as it open for me without issues. Usually, the NYTimes will firewall their articles.

Pastner interview

Coach was interviewed this A.M. about the final four @ 9:30 A.M. The subject got around to his new gig with us. Briefly talked about the difficulty he is having dealing with not having a viable roster to start off. Talked abut how EVERY game is important and losing a game in NOV can be the game that kills your chances to get an at large bid. Talked about the stress of coaching in college vs. the pros ( in the pros a team can go 8 and 7 and still get in the playoffs but if you do that in college you are essentially out of the post season). Interestingly, at the end he seriously shouted out to all the NIL agents to give him a call as he needed players. He is a really smooth and knowledgeable interview. A quality CKK really didn't have.

Revenue sharing G5 implications.

There will be a shuffling of Basketball power rankings among G5 conferences and here's why.

Revenue sharing starts in 90 days. It allows teams to share up to $ 20 million in revenue with their players. P4 conference teams are almost unanimous in their declaration they will spend the entire $ 20 million from the get go. The teams have the $$ to do it. Rutgers has the lowest revenue of all the P4 teams and it is still $ 110 million. Most have committed to a 78% football, 18% men's basketball and 4% to the rest of the programs formula that will share $3.6 with their 13 basketball scholarship players.

So how does this affect Mid-Major basketball? Most mid major teams don't have near the revenue to share that a P4 team has. UNLV brings in between $ 48 Mill and $ 50 Mil. Wyoming brings in $ 43 Mil. Less than 1/2 the lowest revenue of the P4's.

To make things more interesting mid-majors are split into essentially two groups. Those with football and those without. THOSE WITHOUT FOOTBALL CAN GIVE NEARLY THEIR ENTIRE REVENUE SPLIT TO BASKETBALL.

Take USF as an example. Their entire '24 revenue was $ 28 million. Their men's and women's teams each generated nearly equal amounts. Let us say they share 1/4 of their revenue with players for a total of $ 7 million with each of their men's and women's BB teams getting $ 3.5 mil and $ 2.5 each with the rest going to their other sports. Magically, USF can now match P4 inputs and compete. If UNLV can also afford a 1/4 split then $ 9.5 mil goes to football, $ 1.5 men's BB, $ 500 to women's BB and $ 500 to all the rest on the sports. We will be woefully behind the P4 and NON football conferences.

America East, Atlantic Sun, Big East, Big West, Horizon, MAAC, MAC, Summit, WCC. These are the D1 conferences that don't have football. IMO, the Big East will be the winner with way more $$ per team available for BB. Seton Hall brings in the lowest amount of revenue for sports in the Big East at $ 34 million. Working the same % model as above they will have between $ 4 mil and $ 5 mil for men's BB. Villanova's revenue sits at $ 68 million. They are in a position to spend $ 9+ million on their men's players.

And all this is before NIL.
