I've largely been ignoring reno this year, since all of my hate has gone towards sdsu and Boise. You should be on the same boat as us. They tried to leave you behind. You're welcome we said no and decided to stick with the MW, otherwise they might be dead on arrival for 2026. With that said, lets talk about carrying weight and budgets.

I don't know how much reno spent for football this year, but last year it was $13.2m for a 2-10 season. So if we're going off of last year's numbers, your institution spent at least $13.2m to have a losing record of 3-10, and a 0-7 conference record. I guess that extra win counts as an improvement. On top of that, you're still on the hook for 3 years at $1m for Ken Wilson's buy out. I know he joined TCU and his salary is going to offset, but that goes out the window if he gets fired again.

This is per your Chris Murray and your RGJ:

"(UNR) outspent UNLV in eight of (sports), including the more high-profile sports of men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball, although Rebels football jumped ahead of Wolf Pack football in budget in FY23. Despite this increased per-sport investment, if only moderate in some cases, UNLV has won nine of the 12 Silver State Series all-sport competitions against (UNR), including this year's trophy (2023)."

For the Nevada series trophy:

UNLV wins (21 points)

Football
(45-27);women's soccer (1-0 win); women's swim and dive (won regular-season and conference); women's basketball (wins of 92-47 and 98-67); women's indoor track and field (UNLV sixth, (UNR) seventh); women's tennis (won regular-season and conference); women's golf (UNLV second, (UNR) fifth)

(UNR) wins (15 points)

Women's cross country
((UNR) eighth, UNLV 10th); men's basketball (wins of 69-66 and 75-65); men's tennis (4-3); men's golf ((UNR)fifth, UNLV seventh); women's outdoor track and field ((UNR)fourth; UNLV seventh)

You have no argument from me on the state of our men's basketball team.
Reno got us in Men's Golf? This an atrocity. Whoever replaced Knight should be ashamed.

Keeping Odom.

IMO if Odom was staying he already would of said so. Obviously things are not set in stone. Maybe waiting to see how much of a pay raise he gets and his staff that does not get poached. How much NIL money is committed to the program? Im sure there are a few factors. Odom wins vs Boise St and he can pick a ton of places with more $ and closer to Arkansas if not Arkansas. Maybe not even with a win. Odom is on a lot of teams radar.

Keeping Odom.

Agree… hard to look too deeply into what someone says in those situations you mention. Having said that, a person of high integrity (which I believe Odom to be), never ever wants to have that integrity questioned, and will be very careful that what they say aligns with their beliefs, even if things change.

He WILL have to get PAID though. How much will it take though?

I was under the assumption that UNLV wasn’t going to be able to compete with “the big boys” if someone came calling, but looking at a list of coaches salaries I’m not so sure anymore.

To get into the top 50 for coaches salaries it looks like it’s around $4.0-$4.5 million. That would put him on par with the bottom of the B10 and SEC, and middle of the pack in the ACC and B12.

So, is that number “doable” is the first question. It’s a big jump for UNLV of course, but I’d think in light of recent developments it is “doable”.

The second question would be, does it HAVE to be that much or is there ANY value staying at UNLV vs another location.

Having already built “a program”? No state taxes? You like it here? Kids?

I don’t know, just thinking out loud.
I agree on what you're saying, and the only one that really knows the answer is Coach Odom.

My understanding is the conference gets the money and then much like the NCAA distributes as payout credits. Its why the new Pac 12 agreement allows teams to keep 50% of their playoff money or tournament credits. What the school does get is 3 million dollars to cover expenses for the CFP, and any bowl payouts if they advance past the first round of games. Some of the NY6 bowls have nice paydays attached to them

@wolfgang jayn Reno. That is all.

Anyone who comes on a football message board and brings up basketball is out of ammo.

Anyone who comes on a message board when their college team of choice is Reno compared to Las Vegas, already has 1 foot in the grave.

Tell me what’s great about Reno without bringing up Tahoe and something Vegas doesn’t do better.

Your city sucks; your university agrees which is why they have abandoned it for Nevada. We have a better school. I mean….

From that I see that each of the 12 teams gets $4 million. That doubles for those teams that don't have a bye since they get $4 million for the quarterfinals. That would be $8 million for our first game plus an additional $3 million for expenses. From that article that is a lot different from what I thought I knew. This changes every years. This article states it a little different so try this:

Yeah, had read both of those before, which is sort of why it’s confusing. Both state that the money goes to the conference, so… I’m sure there has to be some of the revenue going to the actual school that makes it, just haven’t read anything that explains that portion.

Keeping Odom.

People say "the right things/what you want to hear" all the time. Especially at the beginning and wanting to make a good impression. He seems like a stand up guy though so hopefully he meant what he said. But on the other hand, he could have meant it "at the time." Regardless, hope we can keep him for years. It would be nice if he could put the fans minds at ease by saying that he loves it here and isn't going anywhere for years to come.

What I’m not clear about, and not sure if someone else on here knows, is if the CFP money goes to the school or the conference?

I’ve read conflicting things on this and just curious if anyone else has a clue.
My search engine found this..

Attendance revenue

The CFP Committee sees it is in their best interest to give the SEC & B10 something like $20 million, the B12 and ACC will get about $12 million, and any G5 school that gets in will make about $6 million. These are for the schools that get into the 12 team playoff.

The CFP also gives all G5 schools an extra $1.85 million. WSU and OSU were going to get less but kicked up a storm of whining and will get more than the other G5 schools. I believe I had seen the dollar figure somewhere around $3 million for them but, maybe @Loyal Coug1
would know.

I'm working off of memory here so the actual dollar figures need to be looked up for verification. I think I'm close though.

So we get $6MM just for making the CFP? That alone will take care of assistant staff salary increases over 5 years plus contribute a little to Odom's bump you just need to get Odom's money some of which should come from higher attendance this year and the conference title game. That is before we talk about the MWC bonuses we arranged.

The MWC Championship game on Friday will also bring in some cash. Ticket revenue is split between the two schools but, the home school will get a larger share. I haven't read how much larger. All the expenses are paid by the MWC.

After that we want the CFP +$6 million but, if we don't get there then we go to another bowl game where we will make some extra cash.

Winning has its perks.

What gives me hope that Odom is invested in UNLV and will be here for a while, is the story he told when he was first hired as HC. He was still with Arkansas and was in Vegas on a recruiting trip to Bishop Gorman. He said he had some time to kill so he drove down to UNLV because he had heard about the new Fertitta Football Complex and wanted to see it for himself. He said he just walked into the complex without being invited or anybody knowing who he was and was absolutely overwhelmed by what he had saw. Then when he heard the UNLV HC position had come available, he immediately called the UNLV AD and told him he wanted the job. UNLV didn’t call him, he called UNLV! I think when he saw the Fertitta Complex and Allegiant Stadium, he knew the potential UNLV had and knew automatically that UNLV is where he is supposed to be. He’s been in the SEC and knows the challenges of coaching in the SEC or any other P4 conference and knows the boosters and fan base are fickle and impatient and he would have to win immediately. At some point it’s no longer about the money, it’s about quality of life and putting roots down and leaving a legacy where he can say, I did that. JMO though.
