Rod has left the building

That’s what everyone said about UNLV 2-3 years ago when realignment was beginning. And now 2-3 years later UNLv is left is a worse conference situation than they were. So I’m not going to hold my breath thinking good things are coming.
Well, we're actually still in the same situation for the next 2 years. Maybe even better since I believe that the MWC5 teams that left forfeit any additional money they make from the NCAA tournament credits. I'm not sure on bowl money. However, yes, after 2 years, it's definitely a gamble.

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

In all seriousness though, who the f*** is the PAC adding that isn’t going to be a huge black eye to finish all this off?

Take UNLV and AFA off the board for now…

Any of the remaining MW teams would (imho) be an “ok” add and still within your footprint. I mean at this point they have to just hold their noses and do what needs to be done.

Who else? One of the previously mentioned Texas Schools, who are so popular I can’t remember any of their names?

Another run at the AAC schools? I mean maybe but…

I’m sure there are more dominoes to fall… just too much makes no sense.

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

They will not pay 17 mil, it will be much less.
What they will pay could be paid for with increased revenue in as many as 3 years. And that is just the profit over the contract that they are used to.
New conference will be G5 but much stronger top to bottom. Oh year and the old conference is going to drop significantly
Thats why.
Also the PAC has over 200 mil in the war chest, I'm guessing thiy can afford to help with some of these exit fees.
They are the MW now, and we are the WAC after the MW teams were created.
How do you know they will pay much less. SMU negotiated only a 10% reduction with the AAC from $27.5 mill to $25 mill. 10% appears to be the norm.

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

What is not being discussed is why any school would pay $17 mill to join a G5 conference? Didn’t the PAC2 pick up the exit fee for Boise and the 1st 4? Also, don’t expect much of a discount on the exit fees. SMU’s exit fee from the AAC was $27.5 mill and negotiated to $25 mill. But the was paid to join a P4 conference.

Yes. That's why they went to the Pac 2. They agreed to cover all fees. Then they tried to low ball everyone else instead offering estimated media payouts that exceeded current deals. Now they're trying to get out of half of those fees... it's dumb buisness

HUGE NEWS!

Might as well lock Kruger in and let him coach for the foreseeable future. There’s no need to throw any money at basketball now. Nobody is going to come out to watch these games. We’ll have 2 decent games worth seeing after Christmas now (UNR/UNM).

MWC 3.0 is likely a 1 bid league most years.
**** that. At least hire someone that has some emotion and personality that can actually recruit and coach and be dedicated to it. Hell put Lindy in the job.

HUGE NEWS!

I'd be shocked if that's true considering the markets we lost. How couldn't it go down?

I'm mean holy hell that's great if that's the case.

But I'm skeptical how 6 teams is equal to 12 for a media deal.

Hey maybe I'm selling Gloria short. Maybe all this time she's had two phones to her ear. One telling the PAC to show her the money and the other lining up schools I thought were out of reach.
It may not go down in the near term. What Rosegreen posted: “Mountain West schools currently make almost $6 million annually in overall payouts. League officials have informed UNLV that preliminary negotiations indicate that number should not decrease when a new media rights deal is signed despite the loss of several name-brand institutions.”

It may not go down short term but if the media rights stay at or near $4 million the overall school revenue will eventually go below $6 million because all the Tourney units earned by the departing schools will eventually dry up. With this conference we may be a one bid league into the Tourney from here on out. We may need to cheer for the traitors to earn more Tourney units over the next two years to stretch this out.

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

Debt: In September 2024, UNLV was reported to have a debt of $20.6 million in its athletic department.

So basically we are going to pay off our debt.

Which is good.

Not sure the remaining 5 million will be enough to lock up Odom long term, and position ourselves for the BIG12 and also improve our NIL packages..

Is there more money coming down the road?
Bull, I looked up the Athletics' Department debt load and I saw $10 million as of 2023 with no debt added in 2024. My information is from UNLV's athletic site. I've seen the $20 before in other posts. Do you know why there is such a large difference?

HUGE NEWS!

My gut tells me that since this is the case there's a couple things that were probably true. The PAC wasn't offering to pay our buyout to a level which we could afford it AND we were probably starting at 50-75% of the media deal for 2-3 years AND the PAC doesn't have a hard media deal in hand.

It's a conservative play, but if we're signing a rights deal for 5 years and getting 25-30 million to stay home then the math probably ends up working out in our favor over that 5 years. We can't be getting that much money AND be poaching from the AAC so we'll probably be looking to add NMSU, and Sam Houston or UTEP to get to 9 teams (I'd prefer Sam Houston of those two Texas schools).

The hard truth is the overall quality of the MWC is going down. I think our next media deal is going to be significantly less unless we take a ton of Friday and Thursday game options to give those networks something 'different'. We also, can't afford to be mediocre in the money sports in this conference. This conference is going to be a 2 bid league in hoops at best, and there won't be any 10-2 teams in football that are sniffing the playoffs.
