HUGE NEWS!

My perspective on possible Texas schools from living here 20 years.

Sam Houston/Texas State. Very similar. Tx State is about an hour outside of Austin which is blowing up these days. Sam is about 90 min from Houston. They both actually have a decent amount of alumni in big markets. Their biggest fans are in their respective towns which are small. These second and third tier TX schools and students typically are bigger fans of TX schools that they group up with. Like UT and A&M. So much that even current student may try to get into UT games or A&M games over their own school. I have seen this before.

So adjacent to big markets with a so-so share. Their fans are usually fans of other schools over their own. They are also relatively new to FBS. If they get big, they get some decent crowds. So some potential.

UTEP is different. It it is the best market in isolation by far. They are out on their own a bit more in terms of TX so they have fewer fans that are bigger fans of other schools. They obvisously have stunk it up the past few years. But they do have a cool stadium built into a mountain with decent capacity and have had a pretty good bowl attached to them ( The Sun Bowl), but honestly I don't know if that still exists TBH.

In terms of Market share UTEP is probably number 1, but the other 2 might have better potential? UTEP is close to New Mexico so they make more geographical sense.
The attendance for Texas State is by far better than the other two. UTEP is like our Silver Bowl days at its absolute lowest minus a thousand or two.

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

They may be already to plan D

Oh..

Was there another swing and a miss I didn't see?

I've been distracted.

I went down a hilarious rabbit hole of UTEP and NMSU twitter.

UTEP fans..I swear to God I'll cancel my season tix if we get left behind again.

My personal favorite was..

If we can't get invited to this 'jank ass' version of the MWC we should just shut the athletic department down..There was some other colorful language and tweet has since been deleted. But 'jank ass' caused me to chuckle..

NMSU fans are mostly blaming UNM..🤣

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

It is a combination.

Sure they cannot use the hisotrical data too much, but they have numbers from non conference games and against FCS schools etc. They have a good idea.

Potential is higher. UNLV has very high potential, but it isn't there yet. SJSU has very low potential, because people don't care when they are good.

So far not enough people care now that we are good, which also sucks. I hope it improves.

Utah state dropped the value, but again they are taking a middle tier MW school/media value. It won't drop that much.
I have no doubt they’ll be valued more than the MW. Unless Gloria is successful in adding all of NIU, Toledo, NMSU, Texas State, Gonzaga, St Mary’s and GCU.

But there isn’t a prayer for the Pac getting to the $12.5m potential that they’re trying to sell to other schools. Not in its current form. I would be surprised if they made it to 10m. I personally think 6m I think is too high, but that wouldn’t surprise if it ended up there. I have no inside knowledge, other than knowing CBS sports won’t take them.

***IN ADDITION***

I think we should be able to run all over these fools, but I imagine Skipper's defensive strategy this week will be "If Hajj can beat us through the air...God Bless Him." Expect 7-8 on every play to stop our running game. Hajj will need to do work.
Sacramento State put up 30 points and 470 yards of offense against them, so hopefully we can move the ball well too. They did give up 46 though. The key is going to be starting well. Can't have another 1st half like the Kansas game.

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

There's truth to this...

One advantage the PAC has is they have all of the audio visual productuon stuff left over from the original PAC. That cuts into costs of their media deal and any new partners they may have. THE CW or whatever streaming outlet they might get tied with won't need to buy new equipment etc for broadcasts.

I digress.😀

I'm sure they had contingency plans in place.

PLAN A, B, C, D etc.

Well plan A (Memphis and Co) fell through.

Plan B they got half of what they wanted (USU). I truly believe they thought UNLV would cave and take whatever. (We've got enough threads dedicated to what UNLV should or shouldn't have done so not opening that can of worms)

I'm pretty sure they never envisioned it getting to plan C..

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

It was reported by a few different outlets even from the Gonzaga insiders.

It makes sense, I don't think it is that far fetched. I think people in general underestimate how much some of our teams drag down our payouts. Also people underestimate the PAC-2's value.

It is not a fact. But while it is true the PAC does not have a contract, they have been very open that they are making these moves under the direction of their TV partners. I think they know exactly which each school brings to the table and probably have a real time number on what payouts will be. They aren't making up numbers and hope to get it, they are using numbers from the TV partners themselves.

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

I don’t think it’ll be easy. Osu and wsu numbers are over valued and are high because of who they played previously. Boise and Fresno have been good programs, but its not what it was. Same with Sdsu and Utah state. But any valuation would be based on how they’re doing now, and not potential.
It is a combination.

Potential is trickier. It plays a role, but I think they want to go with more vetted data over futures. UNLV has very high potential, but it isn't there yet. SJSU has very low potential, because people don't care when they are good.

Have to take care of a family situation in St. George, otherwise I would be there. FS1 on my DirecTV stream will do just fine. That's the last home game I'll miss this season.

Really wish I could be there to see the fans and players rally around each other. Would be a HUGE win for the program moving forward. As Dory would say, "just keep winning, just keep winning" or something like that.

Defense will need to come up huge to get this win. If it's a shootout I trust Keane more than Hajj or Cam to come away with the W. Need to get pressure with 4. Their passing attack is really good. If we're forced to bring 5-6 just to get pressure Keane will pick us apart. I love our LBs. Stout and smart. DBs and safeties are proving to be excellent.

They do like to get the ball out quick so tackling will have to be superb. If the first guy misses the play will go for 7-8 yards every time. Need to limit that and get them in 3rd and long situations. They use the play action a lot so our players just need to trust eachother and schemes. Play within the confines of your own duties.

Then Fresno safety went out last week and needed surgery (prayers for his recovery) so I think the deep ball will be there if Hajj wants to stretch the field. I know deJesus and White just want the ball. We can win by just getting them the ball and let them do work in man situations. Go 6 yards per play by just putting it in their hands and take the pressure off of Hajj. Then use post/wheel route combos for homerun balls if the secondary decides to press.

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

Is that 12 with the AAC teams a fact? Or just what the PAC was throwing around? I'd guess that's what they sold the MWC4 original group on. What does it do to the new PAC if they add a team like Sac State as their 8th member?

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

The PAC will easily get above the 6 mil. I think it will be 8. It was 12 with the AAC teams.

Again based off the current MW contract it will be better. Because that is what it is now. Cutting out the dead weight will raise the per team.

This is why they decided to break away and form their own thing. Becuase they can do much better on their own without the MW fluff.
I don’t think it’ll be easy. Osu and wsu numbers are over valued and are high because of who they played previously. Boise and Fresno have been good programs, Boise having a good following in their region. Sdsu and Utah state are not what they were before. But any valuation would be based on how they’re doing now, and not potential.

From what I can see on UNLV tickets, it looks like there may be less than 1000 seats available in the lower bowl, so the lower bowl should be pretty much full. Hopefully they open up some of the upper sections as well.
Just checked on the UNLVTickets site, and it looks like a bunch more seats just became available in some of the sections. Mostly sections 128-132. Not sure what that's about. Do they have them available on other sites or something, up until the day before the game?

ABOUT THAT MONEY...

Well not quite what the article says, but I get you. I had read that article previously. Hard to believe though, that the Pac would cover most or all of the Traitors exit fees then only offer Memphis, etc. $2.5M. But then our Commissioner is an idiot.

Per the article:

"At the time, the idea that in less than a year the Pac-12 would be willing to pay roughly $115 million for one-third of the Mountain West seemed unrealistic.

The Pac-12 would be willing to help fund the exit fees, the schools were told, which took away the primary risk factor"

Pretty sure when this whole plan was put in place Texas State, Utep, NMSU, SAC STATE weren't on anybody's bingo cards.

Imagine the PAC meetings might be getting a little snippy about now.

OK, things have settled. Now the first order of business...

He may want not to extend it, which I get.

But even still why not? If he keeps things up, he will have suitors. He seems to like it here, so I think he likes the idea if setting up UNLV if he were to move on.

But I think his number 1 would be to stay and be UNLV's coach in the Big 12 ( other than a big SEC school of course). Best case that happens in 2 years. The longer we get past the MW split the more difficult it will be. Unless somehow we become the new Boise. We get to the playoffs and we stay relevant based off of our name. But man, that is still tough.

But even then, he lived that life. And he was fired for being good not great at a job like that. His alma mater to boot. He may rather have very good money and security and autonomy vs ludicrous money with the threat of losing you job nearly every year.
Exactly. Gonna come down to what he wants. He could literally go down as a football icon and legend in Las Vegas if he sticks around. Not to mention that the path is much easier here for success than if he takes a job in the SEC again. I don't know what his priorities are, but money is always an important factor. No chance that we can compete with the money that most of the P4 conference teams have, but he can live quite well here and reap all the benefits of being an icon here the rest of his life.
