I'm loathe to give anything or anyone Reno any credit but.

I sorta don't understand the Reno hate. They are, after all, your mother school who gave birth to UN Southern.

Oops - will that get me banned? :)
Loyal Coug1: You should probably know the history of UNLV. UNLV was under the "thumb" of Reno when it first opened in 1957. At that time it was known as Nevada Southern University. We became an equal separate institution around 1970 under one Board of Regents. We rebelled against Reno, that's why we are called the Rebels because we didn't want to be under the auspices of a school "up North". The movement to form a new school here came from the local population in Southern Nevada, not Reno. That's why there is such a rivalry. Now we are a larger institution than Reno.

Assuming Hawaii gets done..Then what?

No matter what we do it's a downer. There inevitably will come a time when we aren't in contention for anything. A few years of a bad run, lose a coach etc. An 0-4 Rebels against a 1-3 Sam Houston State would generate around 10,000 fans in Allegiant. An awful experience. I think the only way to avoid a complete season of this would be to have 5 OOC games with two or three of them at Allegiant. And the games would need to be NAME P4 teams.

Assuming Hawaii gets done..Then what?

Without knowing enough about the impact of only having X number of conference games, I’d say stand pat for the time being. Establish your media rights deal to see where you’re at and then consider future adds and maybe add them at lower tiers depending on what they bring to the table.

I wonder if it would be possible to do a pseudo playoffs in conference. Seed the top 4 in one group and the bottom 4 in the other and have those groups play out a semifinal and “championship” game. I don’t know… just a thought.

Defense

why so much against a poor passing Utah St?!
You do know that Utah State is the 14th school in the nation in passing yardage and completions, 9th in attempts. Nationally. In the conference they're 2nd in YPG, 3rd in passing touchdowns. They turn the ball over a lot and are terrible in the red zone, but they're not a poor passing team.

Assuming Hawaii gets done..Then what?

Getting Hawaii done is paramount obviously but after that then what.

Saw adding Hawaii as full member could keep MWC media deal around 5-6 million. Amazing what the degenerate gambler demographic adds to your media market value.

CUSA teams seem the most likely potential additions but not sure how much any would add to a media package. There are some interesting Sun Belt teams but honestly unless you could add a minimum of at least 4 'Eastern' schools not sure it makes much sense for any to join financially without travel partners.

NMSU seems a natural fit but being only 100k population in Las Cruces and only 50 miles from El Paso they probably don't add much for a media deal. UTEP despite their struggles was the better choice based purely off their population vs NMSU.

Sam Houston State gets you a second team in Texas and they are playing decent football.

La Tech probably a no.

Western Kentucky would be a good get and increase conference footprint but would need travel partners.

There just aren't many West options really.

Not sure even as football only Toledo and NIU make a lot of sense. Feels like you would need a few more 'Eastern' teams as travel partners for it to make sense.

8 with Hawaii full member gets MWC to the magic number but means teams are going to need 5 OOC games which isn't ideal.

Because he's terrible...
Honestly, I want him to fail miserably for 3 years and them to fire him and hire some other mistake and keep the cycle of terrible Reno teams going

Terrible seems a bit harsh no? They played SMU tough. Got smoked by Minnesota but otherwise played everybody else pretty close. I think the Chode is a decent coach. Certainly an upgrade after last dude.

I'm not rooting for Reno to win but I'm not upset at anybody in the conference beating the new PAC schools.

“Did you guys win again?”

It is strange. Not nearly as intensified as basketball hey day where everyone was a fan or anyone local who wasn’t a fan knew …

Get it at work, get it at grocery stores and convenient stores … people I don’t know personally but have weekly interactions with … they all ask, they all said they read or saw … got a totally random picture yesterday in front of the Mack, guy is from Michigan, big MSU fan … selfie in front of the Mack, wanted to see the statue … “finally made it here, too bad basketball sucks but football is rolling” … hadn’t spoken to this guy in over 10 years …

It’s kinda cool.
I just hope that they can sell a bunch more tickets for the BSU game to counter the large expected contingent coming down from Boise State. Only around 1500 seats left in the lower section, it is time to get 35K plus to the Boise State game. A strong game against Oregon State is needed to get people motivated that this team is for real, and they should come out and see for themselves. As a side note, UNLV would be bowl eligible the earliest ever if/when they beat Oregon State

Line ‘em up: Predictions and Game Thread USU

Maybe if we are up 24-7 at the half, we roll to a 41-14 victory and don’t feel as badly. But the win did leave me with a bad feeling.

Being up 41-7 at the half, yeah, insurmountable, call of the dogs, I get it. But UNLV is not good enough and we just haven’t arrived to the point where we can lose complete focus for 30 minutes.

I’m sure the coaches envisioned foot off the gas pedal, win the game 55-17 or something, not give up 21 or 28 unanswered, or whatever it was.

Regardless of the strategic mindset, I have to believe the second half didn’t go as they anticipated.
Take a look at how much BSU struggled with Hawaii until the 4th quarter. UNLV had blown out Utah State and put the breaks on to early, and once you put on the breaks, it is hard to get the players motivated again. A lesson well learned is never take the foot off the gas pedal until the final whistle!

Did you know Jeff Choate coached at WSU one year (2012)? And grew up in St. Maries, Idaho - about an hour from Pullman if not pulling a boat.

You cannot escape the Cougs no matter where you roam. Just ask Fresno. Arguably their best coach ever was Jim Sweeney, former HC at WSU.

It's Jeff Chode. I'll ban you if you refer to him as Choate again. 😀
