PAC HIRES OCTAGON

Are you sure on the part about no P4 exit clause for free? I thought I saw on X where people were saying that the PAC schools ARE able to exit if invited to an autonomous 4 conference. Maybe the key part is "free exit" though. I'll have to check into that.

I believe OSU/WSU have that clause. I'm not so sure about the other 5. If I'm wrong on that I'll correct it for sure.

Rebels Media Coverage

It is sad, but Vegas is not Vegas of 25, 10, or even 5 years ago. Too many other things going on. If the Runnin' Rebels want to be talked about they need to give them something to talk about. That is something that hasn't happened in 10+ years. Everyone, media and fans, are in a wait and see mode with this team. They'll get support if they win. Same as it has ever been in Vegas.

Rebels Media Coverage

It's the first game of a local team in a major college sport. I'd expect a discussion on the new players who are expect to make an impact. What the veterans will bring. Injury update. Talk about Alabama State ( where they are from in Alabama, bit about the coach, their star players, where they are picked in their conference etc ) Discussion on where we are picked in the preseason polls. Discussion on KK's prospects for the future.

To just ignore the team is unacceptable.
You and me and the very few other die hards would love that. Unfortunately there isnt enough interest in the program right now. These media guys have to get numbers and right now talking about Rebel basketball doesnt do that for them

Rebels Media Coverage

Kevin needs to give them something to talk about.
I guess they could say Rebels play Alabama St tonight. This is a Rebel team that has less talent than last years team. A team that lost to Southern and got blown out at Home to Air Force. More than likely a .500 team this year. How many people are going to care to read or listen to that discussion?
Want Rebel coverage in basketball then Kevin needs to put a product on the floor worth talking about.

PAC HIRES OCTAGON

I truly don't think that they ever truly believed that they were going to get Power conference status. Even if they landed all of their top selections, it wasn't going to happen. Maybe an argument, but it wasn't going to happen.

They did what they should have done, try to sell that promise to anyone who would listen. Their name is still associated with a power conference, even though it is not. Like I said, they have a better brand, that is for sure. But I strongly doubted that they would have expected to be given AQ status.

They are somewhat out of good options, which is why they hired Octagon. Their internal team can't find a suitable 8th. Hiring outsied help will guide them in the best possible choice at this point.

I agree they are going to like what they hear, because their options are slim. They will likely have to go with a very underwhelming pick like NMSU or a PCS team with some upside like Sac State or Texas State. They are probably trying to decide if it is worth going with a team that offers zero media value now, that has a higher ceiling, or a team that has a bit more value now, but a lower ceiling.

Like I have said before, they could bite the bullet and circle back to UTSA. Again not making 9 million now, less of a travel issue. They just have to help pay up front. That would probably maximize their annual payouts. They could try to get Rice too, for the same reasons. Also when multiple teams leave, the exit fees tend to reduce. Texas and OU had a nearly 40% reduction as just 2 teams last season.

I don't think UTSA has the money. But possible.

Rice. Great school overall. Have money. But likely does nothing to enhance brand or revenue...

I don't think they circle back to MWC.

Honestly believe Gloria is in FAFO mode.

Will PAC ultimately be better conference..Yeah but it's like turning 16. Dad tells you if you get all As you get a car. He hints at passing down his beautiful 67 candy apple red mustang.

The big day arrives. He hands you a set of keys you go outside and it's a 1997 Corrola. You're happy to have a car but it sure as shit not what you thought you were getting.

The funniest thing would be if PAC deal gets them 7 million per year. Or about what Boise makes now on the sweetheart deal they got from MWC...

UNLV (-13.5) @ Hawaii

I think this is way too many points. Travelling to Hawaii is already tough, and they have been playing pretty good ball recently, esepcially on defense. Beating Fresno in Fresno is something.

I think this is likely our toughest remaining regular season game this year. Being in Hawaii definitely contributes to this. But rivarly game, to a team that is playing as well as anyone not Boise or UNLV right now.

If they go from 5 million to say 8 millon. Is it an upgrade? Sure. No doubt.

It's also nearly half of what they thought they could get and at best makes them the top G6 conference, which oddly enough the MWC was already considered arguably the best G6.

'The return to a POWER conference is out the window'

The biggest loser could end up being OSU/WSU who could end up making a 3rd of what their previous contract had been. Sure better something than nothing but it will be tighten the belts for them now.

Great for USU/CSU/SDSU etc. They get a raise.

You do not hire Octagon this late in the process if things are going well. And I'd be willing to bet there are some rumblings now about direction. The only schools with a vote until 2026 are OSU and WSU.
None of the new PAC schools have a 'P4' clause to get out for free.

How stupid would you feel as the SDSU AD if Big12 came knocking again. And here you are signed up with a 30 million dollar exit fee after already paying 11 million dollar one.

Would not be shocked if Octagon is telling them a lot of things they don't want to hear.

Football talks

I stopped following bb about 15 years ago. What I've gathered from this FOOTBALL board is he hasn't done very well. I see he is just over .500 in wins. What's the problem? Is it his coaching? Recruiting talent? His intangibles and inability to get the most out of his players? Is it time to move on?
He cant coach, that's number 1, his recruiting is so-so, he got Thomas, that was huge, but overall he doesnt recruit to what type of offense they run, but then again, i really dont know what they run outside of the weave and let Thomas dribble and attack, so frustrating, but with that offense you need 3 guys who can handle the ball and attack and dish to open shooters, did i say shooters, does UNLV have shooters?

Attendance against Alabama State

I think the true attendance would be around 17,500 because interest is super high.

But all these other things that Vegas has going on … it’s just really bad timing. Because of those other things, our actual bodies in seats will probably be only 5K. But multiply what ever warm bodies are in there by 3.5 to get the TRUE attendance. DO NOT believe for one second that overall interest has dropped, it’s just temporarily displaced by unfriendly circumstances of the night.
While UNLV attendance is likely to struggle until they can show that this team will turn things around, I find it unlikely that a game between Ohio State and Texas would have any real impact on the attendance for UNLV. Either you are going to UNLV basketball or you are not, they do not tend to get many casual fans that go to their games when playing lower level opponents.

UNLV (-13.5) @ Hawaii

Hawaii is 4-5 now, just beat Fresno at Fresno with 2 TD's in the 4th, much better team.
But UNLV is the 2nd best team in MWC, there is no reason not to finish this out with 4 and row at 10-2 and get good bowl game if they dont get Boise rematch.

Tell me this, how many would have said 3 years ago, UNLV is going to win 19 games in 2 year stretch in Football, not one of us.

Rebels Media Coverage

UNLV is at war with our local media groups. The Rebels for the last few months are NEVER mentioned on Las Vegas’s main early morning talk show. It’s on purpose. A lot of friction going on. And today, November 5, our basketball home opener, got a blimp of an article in the morning sports section on page 9. Unheard of those many glorious years ago. So, what is the problem? Who owns the radio station that would allow its own show to not talk about the home town team? Something has got to give. Been going on for a while. On a lighter note, Kruger’s Rebels have a chance tonight to change course, come out RUNNIN… Come out fired up… Come out with the purpose of being Exciting… Or, we get the same vanilla product on the floor again. Your choice Rebels. Quit being mediocre. Run Rebels Run… Reinvent Runnin Rebel Fever.. win Las Vegas back again.
UNLV fans are not even interested, so why should the media make a big deal about UNLV?
