The soccer World Cup was awarded to a combined USA, Canada, and Mexico bid for 2026. They haven't picked the cities yet. I would love to see Las Vegas host a couple of games.

Well that's lame. Looks like the cities in the west that are still in the running are Seattle, LA, San Fran, Denver. Hopefully some of us get to go to a game or two

Why is it a once in a lifetime opportunity? What games do you think they would play in Las Vegas? If they felt like it was worth the output of cash to get games in Las Vegas, they would have put they would have pushed for the games. With all of the requirements of the World Cup, Brazil tossed billions into the toilet. The World Cup has become a big time money loser like the Olympics! http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/07/09/brazil-loses-big-at-world-cup-and-not-just-on-field.html

It’s a once in a lifetime opp cause World Cup isn’t coming back to the US in my lifetime. What games? I dunno..North Korea vs Philippines.

I’m sure the people who went to Brazil didn’t care about Billions lost.

I for one would have loved to see an influx of Brazilian soccer fans and Brazilian hookers into Vegas

Nations loose money because they have to build the stadiums and infrastructure. The US has all of this already. At least most of it. Vegas will have a shiny new stadium (well, 5-6 years old by then) and plenty of places for people to stay. Sure they have reasons though for backing out.

Looking forward to a couple weeks of road tripping to catch some World Cup action! Try and get to Toronto or Mexico City as well for a match. Hopefully I'll be able to go to Dubai as well. All the games are within a short driving distance. Great chance to catch a game everyday!

From RJ:

The requirements included providing two outdoor venues — each capable of seating 20,000 people to watch every tournament game on a big screen at no cost, Hill said. The city also would have had to provide secure world-class practice facilities shielded from the public to teams that would be competing in games played in Las Vegas.

He also noted that the six-week tournament occurs at a time of year when Las Vegas resorts already are at high occupancy with summer vacationers.

Perhaps those "world-class" practice facilities was the kicker? Who knows. Raiders won't be building an indoor practice facility? And the 20k venue, in summer, well, to hot in Vegas! Freemont Street though for something like that? Would think the Casinos down there would foot that for the increased traffic.

I also wonder about the field. Artificial might not be an option.
