People forget that Iowa State could barely afford TJOs buyout at UNLV. They did some money gymnastics with his contract at ISU.
It was a similar situation as we are in right now with giant contracts going out to Mullen, Kevin Kruger buyout etc.
Sometimes you got to go all in for the guy you want, if TJO didn’t pan out in Ames, the AD would be a sure fire goner. It worked out well for them, now we got to get the guy that fits Vegas. (Bucky or Wade).
