Maiava in the portal

Sound like Maiava staying and Marion is whoring around.
LOL but it rings with some truth. I get the CFB world is dog eat dog and everyone is out for themselves in the end, but it sure feels like post-games Marion has been walking the Strip in heels looking for his next suitor. I’m sure he’s better than that but he hasn’t handled things very well. There is something to be said for staying the course in one place, building deep relationships, living up to commitments, etc., which also helps elevate a career. He’s traveled a bunch. Perhaps it would do him well to plant some roots for a few years, whether here or at another school.

I dont know if Marion is welcome back after the UTEP sleep over? I have nothing concrete but my feeling is that Coach O already called someone.

No.

More likely Odom understands how things work. He's not going to tell any assistant not to take an interview.

I'm sure he has a contingency plan if Mariin got that job or any other job that may pop up.

Why? Odom openly discussed his assistants getting HC jobs and what that means. He understands the buisness behind it.
I dont have any knowledge as to how Coach O feels about it one or another, I am just saying that someone may have been contacted during his sleep over.

Glad to see it but Marion’s post comes across a bit scripted and forced. Wonder if he was behind a potential transfer for JM and was volun-told to clear it up publicly?

Probably reading too much into it. More like a lot of confusion the last 24 hours with the Marion/Utep deal falling apart and JM not sure what his future holds, maybe he (JM) was in the dark about the UTEP deal and was pissed off.

We’ll probably never know what went down in El Paso.

That contingency plan may have been put into play once Marion had a sleep over. Who knows? Maybe AA can help fill us in.

How is simply saying "retention" scripted?
Reports that he is transferring, then reports that he is not. So much that the original report deleted his tweet.
I think he was simply confirming that he is NOT transferring. At least not yet.
Which brings up an interesting talking point. Which is better for Maiava?
Staying and starting for a better G5 or sitting the bench at a P4? Better development? Probably. But game reps are different. Hard to poo poo that.
I think we have good coaches and he can develop here and get experience.
Down the road I think he could warrant a bigger bag and a better p4 school, if he continues to develop and improve. Which I think he will. If he wants to go that route later.
But right now his stock is pretty good but not great. He could probably get better NIL to sit next season, I wouldn't fault him for that.
But he will likely get one of the better NIL deals here as the starting QB this next season. It seems like Doug got a decent bag for us at least. Was featured in some commercials.

JM faltered against better competition (SJSU, BSU). He has a chance to redeem himself against KU. Doesn’t have to win the game but play consistent, hit his receivers, not throw really bad pics, etc. If he can’t do that he should stay put and work on his game another year before thinking about a jump to the P4.

Good call, you find that yourself? That’s some excellent sleuthing.
I overlooked it earlier in the day because I went to 247 and On3 and searched Maiava. I found him but looked at it quickly and didnt look at the first name. Then my boy sent it to me an hour ago and I looked over it again. I was like no way....

Oh boy.... so did they hear Jay Maiava and just assume Jayden because man, that's bad
If that is the case, thats really bad. However, this mistake doesnt really resolve the fact that there murmurs about bringing in another QB. I'd feel bad for Maiava if another QB is brought in because it'll be another storm.

We’re not a P4 and need to be careful over recruiting a very solid freshman QB with a very high ceiling. That’s said, we also need capable back-ups and ones that can push JM for a starting position.

No, it doesn't but considering the depth at QB he should know and understand that there will be a player or 2 brought in to at minimum push him

Agreed 100%. Recruiting over Maiava at this point makes no sense at all, especially if he's staying.

If you think you can get a guy that is better than Maiava you do it. With some caveats.

If it's a one year guy I'm a little less interested because Maiava probably leaves and you are in the same boat the next year. If it's a guy wth 2 years eligibility I think you do it as you have the time to recruit/or get his replacement in the portal.

Active competition is a good thing. Depth is a good thing. I'm not sure I want to go into next year with Maiava and only Friel and Edmundson behind him.

I mean, the national press voted him the best freshman QB in the country. Think about how many freshman QB there are in the last two years which includes true freshman and RS freshman like Maiava is. You got this golden clay to play with and mold. Smoothest release I have ever witness and his heart and soul into it....kid put his soul into the game. If UNLV cannot teach a kid like that, then we are not a good educational institution.

You can’t go into next season with Friel and Edmundson, that’d be a nightmare. We’d undo any good we had done.

QBs must be incoming.

Simple question.

Are you more worried about hurt feelings or winning games.

Maiava is good. Not questioning that at all. But if you can get a better Qb why would you not?

Coaches are more intune than we are. If they feel they can upgrade the QB position they absolutely should and will.

Said in another post I would be less excited about a one year plug in. But if it's a guy with 2 or more years of eligibility absolutely.

Is that guy out there and is UNLV a potential landing spot? Don't know.

Agreed. There's enough guys who will be searching for new homes to get some depth. Given the fact we haven't finished a season with same QB for a few years, you have to add competition..

Bull, you talked like Maiava is a professional. He is a kid. Freshman on a national stage. The lights are on him since becoming or acquiring all of these accolades. He is in a slump. Just give him a break.

I can almost guaranteed you that Maiava will kicks the shit out of SJSU and BSU if we play them again next year. I saw the it in his eyes.

We as fans dont need to beat him up anymore. He beat up on himself enough. If anything, we need to encourage our players. Yes, they makes mistakes. That is college. Learn how to learn and then learn how to succeed. Then Success!

What are you talking about?

I said I think he is very good.

I said if you can get better at the most important position on the field you do it.

I think he can potentially lead UNLV to a MWC title.

There are also QBs that may be available in the portal that are better than he is and if they are available you take them and let them compete.

If you have to coddle a guy's ego, he's not the guy.

As for them being professional, the moment they accept money/NIL they are professionals in my opinion.

Can't have it both ways.

The whole kid thing. While I understand that … it’s past that. They are getting money now, free school … it takes away from the kiddism a little bit, at least for me.

The definite point you made about NIL money, is that a fact? In today's football standard, how much was the difference in yesteryear's standard by schools like Ohio State, Michigan, Memphis state etc pays their players? I have mentioned a few times how schools like Memphis paid their players through casino's chips and such (first hand encounter). Now that the NIL is in the open, how is that different? Hush hush money vs openly transparent payment are different in denominations?

Man, you and myself are all involves in recruiting since our days at cnnsi we saw every weird things from from that kid that went to Baylor and Caron Butler. Money always flows with recruiting, it always has. Why do we treat players differently then vs now?

Probably because the power balance flipped completely.

No doubt this is right…I agree. ..but what’s to be said about the psychology a still-developing mind goes through when stuff of this magnitude is being added? It makes you a professional athlete on paper and in the media, and we expect them to act as such. But…..it’s still someone often one year removed from high school. There is a lot of stuff going on in a person that age

I agree with that.

But when they ask to be treated like an adult … treat them like an adult.

Listen, I hate the entire thing. They all “grew up” by seeking out best NILs. It flies in the face of “team” to me. It’s about you now. I can’t stand it, I really can’t. And coaches are doing the same thing. Me me me me. Ugh.

It has not completely flipped, brother. UNLV still have a very chance. This school and its fans need to understand some compassion toward. it players and staff when it warrant. I am about to unleash on that male whore, Marion though.
