We don't have a men's team. It's sad because every year 15 HS men go play volleyball at the D1 level.Hopefully that women volleyball. Men's can stay in the WAC
I always think it is funny how travel cost would be too high for Hawaii if all sports moved to the MWC, then how does the WAC afford to have those sports in their conference?
I don't think it's as much about afford as not wanting to reduce net income on travel expenses but at this point we don't have a lot of options it sounds like.I always think it is funny how travel cost would be too high for Hawaii if all sports moved to the MWC, then how does the WAC afford to have those sports in their conference?
I don't think they really could.I always think it is funny how travel cost would be too high for Hawaii if all sports moved to the MWC, then how does the WAC afford to have those sports in their conference?
And there you go. Honestly it makes things way more palatable public opinion wise. I know it’s a headache but it solidifies things and stops the carousel for a minute so everyone can stop panicking.
Hawaii has a corporate partnership with Hawaiian Airlines. The airline will pull charter planes for them if they ask.I don't think they really could.
They play in Big West now for basketball. All California teams.
It was the Wyoming, CSU, AFA, Boise games that created the problem I believe.
Now Alaska/Hawaiian. So I suppose you vampires are now going to steal my preferred conference corporate sponsor, Alaska/Hawaiian Air. A pox on you!!Hawaii has a corporate partnership with Hawaiian Airlines. The airline will pull charter planes for them if they ask.
You guys can hook up with that air ambulance company. Flight for Life I think it's called. Now Alaska/Hawaiian. So I suppose you vampires are now going to steal my preferred conference corporate sponsor, Alaska/Hawaiian Air. A pox on you!!
They are going to remain individual brands you should be alright. Now Alaska/Hawaiian. So I suppose you vampires are now going to steal my preferred conference corporate sponsor, Alaska/Hawaiian Air. A pox on you!!
I'm ok staying there with the conference. I think we should still reach out to a few schools that would increase the bottom line. But only invite teams at this point that would do this
There is only one correct answer and that answer is....
Obvious move, I think it also adds value to the next tv contract. I still think getting into Texas is a priority even after the addition of UTEP.
You think I’m joking? Las Vegas is a hotbed for men’s volleyball and if they want to continue playing they have to look elsewhere. We don't have a men's team. It's sad because every year 15 HS men go play volleyball at the D1 level.
The conference needs to do something about media rights in Hawaii so we can be assured that all football games from Hawaii are televised back to the mainland.I actually like this. Their volleyball and UTEP's volleyball are really good. I know, I know, but, I like volleyball.
This tells me that we will have a solid 8 full members and we can now lock down a media contract. From there we can then look to grow the conference slowly by bringing in a couple of FCS schools. We have to do that sooner or later because there isn't much else to choose from in the West. Hawaii's media contract with Spectrum may now disappear and hopefully that will add some value to our media contract.
Is that assuming hawaii joins in all sports? Cause formally we only have 7We got our minimum 8 now. There’s no need to rush out and make a bad add (at least from UNLV’s perspective).
Start working on getting that TV contact. A lean 8 team deal should provide UNLV maximum value.
Let’s see what the PAC12 does. They still believe they can land Memphis. If they do it could possibly shake some more options our way.
Just for a little of the old MBB days I’d love having UCSB (Thunderdome) or Long Beach State road trips! Finally some common sense. Now add some basketball schools: St. Marys, USF, Grand Canyon, Irvine, Wichita State, etc.
WKU football only helps the bottom line for this next contract, the other 2 definitely DO NOT.Sam Houston, Packaged with WKU and Middle Tennessee
Then Sam Houston would get you another Texas Market, Sac State a huge market in California.
I'm bullish on Western Kentucky..(See what I did there! Bullish! I'll see myself out).
WKU football only helps the bottom line for this next contract, the other 2 definitely DO NOT.
Selfishly I would love Sam, 90 min drive from my place. I even have close friends that I consider family that live in Huntsville, and a friend that goes to Sam right now, but this will reduce payouts for sure right now.
Sac State- there is potential, but it is not right now. Plus the 5 mil up front to upgrade them? Not helping our bottom line. Let the PAC take them if they really want to.
True, but we don't HAVE to expand now. That is the point. We can still have a championship game.Options are super slim out West.
They are going to have to look Eastward. I'm throwing out anybody with a pulse that seems feasible.
I would rather do this than add Tarleton or NMSU. Makes no sense to cut our own revenue just to add schools for the sake of it.True, but we don't HAVE to expand now. That is the point. We can still have a championship game.
I like adding basketball only teams like St. Marys and GCU. Wichita State? They are AAC now, and they may have tough fees to mess with. Plus being that far is tough for basketball, especially without a partner.
The idea of waiting to see if the AAC blows up is not a bad one. Grab Rice or UTSA, or N. Texas if the PAC gets their first choices. Leaving room for teams that will help is not terrible. No need to dilute with contract detractors now.
Football is already locked in for the next three years other than one more game so not much they can do there.I love this. I hope they cap the league at these 8 teams just like the OG MWC. It will open up more room in the non-conference schedule. If UNLV is truly trying to get to the B12 then a strong non-conference schedule in all sports is imperative.
True, but basketball ain't. If we can get that going it makes us that much more desirable. How times have changed that we need basketball to catch up with football? Bizarro world stuff.Football is already locked in for the next three years other than one more game so not much they can do there.
With the teams leaving the MWC, I am not sure what is or isn't locked down to replace any games verse the five teams leaving after next season.?Football is already locked in for the next three years other than one more game so not much they can do there.
I would imagine we play every team once so 7 conference games which is the same as we play now. The noncon games are already scheduled, if memory serves, we have one game open the next 3 years. With the teams leaving the MWC, I am not sure what is or isn't locked down to replace any games verse the five teams leaving after next season.?
We played 8 conference games. Out of conference was Houston, Utah Tech, Kansas, and Syracuse. Also on years that UNLV plays at Hawaii, they can add a thirteenth game to the schedule.I would imagine we play every team once so 7 conference games which is the same as we play now. I didn't count OSU as a conference game.We played 8 conference games. Out of conference was Houston, Utah Tech, Kansas, and Syracuse. Also on years that UNLV plays at Hawaii, they can add a thirteenth game to the schedule.
It has always been 8 in the past, they just adjusted the schedule to include OSU, so I didn't include them.I didn't count OSU as a conference game.
I could see cutting them SOME slack on the travel fees… maybe by half. Even if you cut them all out and the cost was double per team to travel now versus 2018 ( the year quoted in the article) you’re talking about $300,000 per team in additional travel expenses, which is definitely less than the cost in annual media revenue you’d give up by adding a team other than Hawaii.Still no word on whether Hawaii will come in with all sports. But, I found this good article which mentions the specific costs of Hawaii's travel and the subsidies it pays to both the MWC and the Big West based on time zones...

I just looked at a map of the United States and Hawaii is just southwest of Southern CA, what are you guys talking about?!?!?!?!?I could see cutting them SOME slack on the travel fees… maybe by half.
