Gabe McCoy becomes 3rd commit of the weekend

The Yahoo link still lists him as 200 lbs. He is supposedly now over 220 - still small for DL, so I would expect a redshirt year to bulk up and develop. Could he end up as a linebacker?

This from a California newspaper article:
"An offseason spent in the weight room translated to a monster senior season for the defensive end, who had 17.5 sacks, 25 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles."

I think this kids future is at outside linebacker. He is shredded, but lacks the type of mass needed to play defensive end at the FBS level. He seems plenty athletic enough to be able to move around in space or drop in coverage. One thing is for sure, he can flat out get after the passer something we have lacked for a number of years.

Just watching his film, if McCoy weighed 240 lbs he would have been on the radar of a lot more schools. Which is fine by me since I think we got a kid with a ton of upside.

This class has a few spots left still and I am excited to see who is brought in the last weekend to finalize the class. This staff has shown they can close the deal. Really interested to see if we grab any of the Colorado de-commits that Baer and Larussa were recruiting. Most notably TJ Fehoko. Not sure we have a shot but there is a connection and relationship already established.

Who cares the damn kid has TCU speed and we need athletes that can move to compete I'll take undersized players all day that have speed and the drive to succeed. Search the kid he is chiseled beyond belief. TCU recruits the best athletes regardless of position and put them on Defense seems to work well with them. Gabe McCoy is a hell of an athlete and can fly. 17.5 sacks and I don't care what your league is like that's Bad A$$. Combine measurements are what's wrong they don't measure desire and drive, also if the kid was from LV you'd love the signing FYI.

X, I agree, the staff is targeting kids in a "TCU" like manner. Get the athletes here , then figure out the best position for them and build a scheme around what you have. I think Coach Baer will use some odd fronts and multiple sets to get a swarming defense on the field that is aggressive.

Whatever his weight is/was it is impossible to argue his production his senior year. 17.5 sacks doesn't happen by accident. I can see where some bigger schools may not have been as high on this kid based on his measurements, their loss our gain.

Gary Patterson of TCU (as mentioned above) has built his career on developing 'tweener' guys like this.

He's an athletic clone of Sierra Vista's Chris Goree running a 4.88 but 15lbs lighter. He has slim hips and skinny legs so is abilty to gain bulk may be limited. Goree rated #39 for me locally and top pass rusher Justin Hatfield (6'1 230) came in at 47.
He can be a linebacker in the future but I personally would have pursued a more traditional styled end like Jamell Garcia-Williams. A 6'6 215 kid that's wiry right now but should easily add another 30 to 45 pounds in the future. Dad was a 6'5 245 linebacker for the Steelers and brother is a starting sophomore linebacker that missed the season with injury for Hawaii.

Thanks for posting those buck. McCoy is clear cut better than either. Much more explosion and a lot more polish. The only thing that flashes about Garcia was his frame but very skinny. I noticed multiple times him getting handled by a lineman on his own highlight tape but just ended up making an effort play. Vic Beasely of Clemson is widely regarded as a top 15 pick at 6'2 235 and playing in mostly with his hand in the dirt. Instead of critiquing every pick Will, try to see the vision the staff has for some of these guys, which I think are solid pickups. No need to throw shade at Sanchez for not recruiting guys who may or may not cut it. Who else is recruiting them is the question? He's obviously been around long enough to identify which locals he thinks can make an impact so I'll trust his judegement instead.

Comparing apples and oranges.
McCoy's clips had entirely four plays versus the run. The entire rest of the video was pass rushing versus poor pass blocking with many featuring plays he doesn't have to clear one block. Highlight video is just that, you really can't project anything because the limited play selection.

First impressions after watching that film.

Goree and McCoy look nearly the same size. There is little to choose between the two of them. And while they both might run the same 40 yard dash time, McCoy seems to get off the ball a little better. I do not see any indication that Goree is a superior athlete in any way. To be honest I think there is little to choose between the two. Again based totally on those highlight films McCoy appears to be a little quicker off the ball and seems to have a little more burst and instinct.

As for Garcia-Williams. I don't see how you can make a knock on McCoy saying he has slim hips and skinny legs and not use those same exact comparisons when describing Garcia Williams, instead using a more favorable term like wiry. Again no knock on Garcia Williams, looks to be a real interesting prospect, but I would again say McCoy's tape was slightly more impressive. McCoy also looked more fluid than Williams as well and looks more able to transfer to an outside linebacker position, while Garcia-Williams looks more likely to add some weight and remain on the defensive line.

Gorman didn't play many local team when he was there and many coaches didn't respect the unfair advantages they used. There was even a near brawl in the box at a game I attended.
Overall, Garcia-Williams is raw and skinny but has the better frame and physical upside.
I accept its Sanchez vision but nearly every player they have brought in lack offers as well in a more exposed area for recruiting. I didn't critique Hauck's recruiting because often times it made sense. To me, this class has a ton of long shots with little positional versatility. Recruiting a bunch of guys that won't be around in a couple of years can kill the APR and leave us with no UNLV football. That's a scary thought to me.
I really want to see this team become competitive.
These decisions are done deals, I just hope he does a good job of pursuing walkons. There are major depth issues going into next season.
Spring ball will answer a lot of questions in another month or so.

"The entire rest of the video was pass rushing versus poor
pass blocking with many featuring plays he doesn't have to clear one
block."

I didn't see any difference in any of their videos that would lead me to believe that the pass blocking that Goree and Garcia Williams faced was any better than what McCoy faced. I also did not see where there were so many more plays vs the run in Goree and Garcia Williams either.

I am all for pumping up local talent. I want nothing more than to see kids from Las Vegas succeed. I would love to see UNLV be able to keep as many of the top notch kids at home as well. That said, I think it a bit disingenuous to knock a kids highlight film that is not from Vegas and not bring up the fact that the kids from Vegas' videos show some of the same flaws as well. I think it wrong to say one guy is skinny and another guy is 'wiry'. None of these three players are prototype defensive ends at this point. Garcia Williams has the frame to add 35-40 lbs easily and is the most likely to remain at defensive end. McCoy and Goree are more likely to be moved to outside linebacker based on their builds. I do think however McCoy has a little more burst and might be more likely to be able to be a hand in the dirt pass rush specialist type on 3rd down.

I find it easier it to be overlooked in California, where there are 22 universities to play football so him not racking up a lot of offers doesn't scare me. Nevada has TWO universities in which to further your football career so if you're deemed good enough in Vegas more often than not you'll get a look from at least one of the two. So talk about comparing apples to oranges. There just seems to be some hidden agenda on your end to the point where starving fans of football in Las Vegas can't even be excited about all the positives that are happening without you coming to shoot it down or discredit it if it's not one of you're guys or doesn't seem good enough for you. I'm not blindly following Sanchez and I'm taking a wait and see approach but I'm as excited as I've ever been about the program and don't need anyone tempering my expectations or enthusiasm. He'll either fail or succeed but don't judge the guy and kill him off before he even takes his first spring practice. He can't hide so let's just let his work speak for itself. #GoRebs

"Recruiting a bunch of guys that won't be around in a couple of years can kill the APR and leave us with no UNLV football. That's a scary thought to me"

Again a completely unfair statement unless you have personal knowledge of these kids not from Vegas and their academic histories. Are kids from Vegas better students? My guess would be no considering how low we rank in graduation rate here in Las Vegas.

McCoy weighed 220 on his visit. Plan is rush LB who can drop back in coverage time to time.

LVGAB, do you know the full list of visitors, I knew of Parker Baldwin, Gabe McCoy, Dalton Sneed, Salanoa Wily, Javin White, Jordan Reed. Tyler Whisenhunt, Thaddeus Philyaw.

Did I miss anyone? Thanks.

No one on this football site I trust more than you, you've been here a long time and I enjoy your take on the football side of UNLV football recruiting. That being said I think we need to cut this staff a little room for who and why they are recruiting the kids that they are at this point. First off they haven't been together long enough to really build the type of relationships they will be able to in the years to come. What they have done in the short they've been recruiting is imo amazing to this date. I understand that they may or may not be recruiting to needs but what a breath of fresh air that aren't afraid to tell the rest of us who they have commitef and who is coming in for visits. Not afraid to be second guessed when one or two of these kids gets better offers for other schools and decide to take it! Sure is different from the staff that just left jmo

Lol, east bay is legit when it comes to football talent.
