Look honestly at our wins and losses over the last two years. Our losses have mostly been against elevated competition (except for Fresno last year). Not a knock at all on Odom but if you’re a P4 AD UNLV’s inability to play better against strong competition has got to be worrisome. If UNLV beat Boise and played competitively against a CFP opponent then I could see a P4 program take a serious look at Odom, but wins against mostly low-middle MWC teams isn’t going to cut it. Again, not an anti-Odom post. He’s building something special here, but I’d be surprised a P4 rolls the dice with Odom without having any big-game wins.

Agreed!

I too like Odom and would like to see him here for the duration but I got a feeling he might be leaving soon!

If UNLV can get close to competitive pay (remember, money goes further here because of no state tax) …

Getting a P4 on the brink of a CFP would be huge … some say easier … I don’t think so, unless you are a perennial top 3 in P4 conference type of team … I think it’s actually harder. We have to beat out Boise and even though we are not there yet, it’s not a substantial gap and unfortunately, they are leaving soon anyway …. So if UNLV can be the power, the “hoops SDSU” of the conference - and I do believe we can under Odom … they’ll have a decent shot at CFP a few times per decade ….

Now if somebody is going to offer 6M per year, it’s not worth the battle.

Odom has done a great job here. But he hasn't won a single big game and hasn't beat a ranked team. I think it's a bit of a stretch that a Power program who is worth anything is going to write a check for that. But you never know. ADs get desperate, but if I am a big power school AD I am looking at it as if he still has some work to do here.

I think if UNLV had beat Boise last night and made the CFP’s, it would have been really hard for UNLV to keep him around. I think he’s back next year, but UNLV is definitely gonna have to open the purse strings to keep him around if he continues to win the way he has.

It's a catch 22.

Rebs win, that's another few weeks schools have to wait. A lot of them want to fill jobs sooner than later.

When was the last time this program overacheived? No one had this team winning 10 games and getting into the Top 20. As bad as QB play was last night, it’s been equally impressive most of the season.

If we can’t lock up CBO at a competitive figure we’re not going to be a happy bunch. The TV exposure, rankings, recruiting improvements and attendance have all been huge bonuses under this coach.

I’m as disappointed as everyone here but we’re light years ahead of anywhere we’ve ever been.

Harper and Whitfield kept us in this crap conference. They are on the hook to make sure we are the most competitive team if not the best team in the MWC. Barry Odom is important to keeping us going. If they can't get the money to pay him then we are ****ed. If they fail at this then they need to get the hell out of the city.

I think this playoff situation isn’t going to last… already a ton of pissed off people from the ACC and the BIG12 crying about the BIG10 and SEC bias along with the lone G5 entry. It’s hilarious to me how we finally have a somewhat fair playoff system and some people want the BCS back!

Just watched the former Bucks owner say universities will “sell” a percentage of their teams to billionaires and this thing will be set up like the NFL basically 30-40 teams and everyone else will be left out.

I'd be done with college football at that point.

"Harper and Whitfield kept us in this crap conference."

I don't believe this. Until proven otherwise I believe SDSU blackballed us as undeserving.

Well, if that happens, yes, it’s over and done and you’ll essentially have an ABA/NBA thing with no potential merger. And the ABA had some terrific players, really good players. But nobody watched them or cared about them.

WVU isn't interested in Odom and it's mutual, lol...
I don't think there's any opening right now that is screaming his name. I doubt the UCF stuff was a true candidacy, more of leverage against Frost whose probably getting a nice payday

May not be but there is a connection between Odom and the AD there so it was worth monitoring.

I think he's here at least through next season.

Connection in named university only.... based on what I've read, the WVU AD was in charge of the basketball program while at Mizzou. He was briefly the Interim AD before taking another job 2 weeks later so I'm sure they crossed paths but he was only at Missouri for a year.

We've already tried the "hiring assistants as a favor to a program legend" route with basketball and it didn't work out too well

Not in anyway suggesting it should be done.

Saying if Odom told Harper Scherer was ready to take over the program I think Harper would at minimum trust Odom's opinion.

I'd rather (if need arises) kick the tirescon Jim Mora Jr.

Recruits well. Was solid if underwhelming at UCLA. Is doing pretty well at UConn considering they play an independent schedule.

Why would Odom say that... it's not his job to hire his assistant to replace him... yes publicly he will say he should get a shot somewhere, but if he goes somewhere for $$, it would benefit him taking his staff with him in tack, with paydays for all of them.

Because I think Harper and Odom have a good relationship. I think Odom is a stand up guy. Odom and Michael Scherer are close and if he felt Scherer were capable or ready for a HC gig he'd be honest about it if asked. Or if Scherer expressed interest.

Scherer actually makes a lot of sense, it would follow the Utah model from Urban to Whittingham.

I’m a hard no on Mora Jr.

Ultimately, I’d like Odom to stick around for 10 years and at minimum would be bowling every season.

Yeah I don't think it's some crazy idea that if Scherer wanted the job Odom would be honest if he felt he was ready/prepared to do so.

I think if asked by Harper he would give an honest assessment.

As for Mora...

He can be an abrasive dude. But his run at UCLA was better than Odom at Mizzou. He's done pretty well at UConn all things considered.

I wouldn't love it..But I wouldn't hate it either.

Im of the opinion it's not a decision that will need to be made this year barring some unforseen job opening or a school comes with a Brinks truck.

Mora really wore out his welcome at Westwood. He was run out of town because he sucked as a recruiter and game day coach. He only did well with Neweasel’s recruits.

Fans and donors were boycotting the program until he was canned. Attendance dropped significantly and the monies dried up. They were flying banners to get rid of Mora, and UCLA isn’t any sort of hardcore fanbase. Tells you a lot.

We'll get another year. Year after? I'm not sure depends on

I thought he had good classes but the results weren't matching. Coupled with him being not the easiest dude to deal with was what upset the base?

I could be totally wrong I just thought that's how it went down.
