Purdue wow. They may have money to pay the HC but they don't even have anywhere close near enough money to compete with NIL in that conference. I don't really get it. Best of luck with that Barry.
I definitely would have wished him luck at one time in a year or so but not the way this went down. Conducting job, interviews and salary negotiations during the week of our biggest game in school history? Sorry, I hope he fails.

Thats exactly why you be more aggressive the first time. The buyout is embarassing
Odom probably wouldn’t have agreed to a large buyout. He probably was planning an exit last year.

Purdue? His assistant at Mizzou was just canned there. He is going to bomb so bad there.

We have a little buyout money, not a ton.
My preference is to go out and get another Odom. Successful experience elsewhere at or above the MW level.
The second option would be retain an assistant for somewhat cheap, and use some of the extra money on a basketball coach.
Not terrible, but not bad if you really like an assistant.

Agreed. I think it cuts two ways. Option A which is hire someone with the same experience and skill from a P5 position, or you quickly hire in house like Brennan Marion.

I don’t believe Scherer is going to be coaching on his own here, Odom will want loyalty on his staff at Purdue because that’s a tough tough job. I can’t believe he is taking that job.

Except that they did eventually officially invite us and offered 6 mil in exit fees. We turned them down officially. We weren't part of their first choices, but the idea that Harper kept us in this conference is technically correct
Technically correct. Practically, the budget deficit kept us in the MWC.

Yeah I'd rank Purdue as one of the worst P4 jobs in the country. They got a shot at going 6-6 or 7-5 and that's about it. In fact, if/when the superconference breaks off, I doubt Purdue would be included.

What makes it a tough job is their NIL is almost nonexistent. I can’t believe he would take the money knowing he is going to be a loser there. They fired his assistant after going 3-9 and that’s a Coach Odom has a lot of respect for.

I can see his presser “we’re gonna compete for championships here” and then they go 4-8 or 5-7 at best. He’s just chasing the bag, and this certainly impacted the championship game vs Boise and our chances of making the CFP.

I doubt he would go there. But Indiana was also a middling team in the BIG10 and Cignetti got them into the playoffs year one. Purdue has money as an institution.
IU was not even "middling" before this past season. IU football is probably the worst in the Big Ten, historically, except for Northwestern. Purdue isn't much better but is typically, at least, pretty mediocre (Hazell and Walters years excepted, when Purdue was absolutely pitiful).

No, the second options should be to retain Marion for cheaper, and use some of extra money and spend it on high quality assistant coaches particularly on defense.
Maybe bring skipper back.

P4 jobs even the 'worst' ones, are viewed as better than G5 jobs.
Money.
Being stuck in a conference now on par with CUSA.
The P4 exemption verbiage and staying in the MWC was damage control. There's no Big12 invite incoming.

Take your pick...

My guess and purely a guess would be that Purdue's people (along with other schools) had people contact Odom's people to gage interest.

I'd be surprised if Odom interviewed for the job the week of the Conference title game and a potential playoff spot in play. Could he have? Sure it's possible but man...Id be shocked if he did. I mean if UNLV had won there's absolutely no way he he'd interview heading into a CFP game right?

Plus signing the contract (According to Twitter insiders) the day of the Title game? Sounds off no?
.
Same guy claiming it's Odom, also posted the two teams in this game are auditioning for the Purdue job. (It was a picture of Tulane and Army)

I looked on Purdue message boards and they seem to think it is likely Odom but their sources are the same twitter accounts being discussed here.

Plus you'd think if this was a done deal his brothers tweet today would have been worded much differently.

Why can't we just have nice things without the drama.
Guess you were REALLY surprised! 😁

Oh I agree. I've said all along every P4 job is a threat. 'Middling' was me not wanting to dump on IU or any other school by calling it a dump, considering how bad we've been..Glass houses and all that.

I don't buy that argument. Our budget is in better shape than many of those making the jump. They offered 6 mil in exit fees and those are likely getting talked down to 11 mil or less. Spreading 5 mil out over 3 years? Easy peasy

Yeah. I don't think out budget/debt was part of the reasoning. I think someone legitimately believes we needed that free P4 leave clause and that we needed the added money to invest into the program. If it's just to pay a minimal debt down then it would be very short sided long term. I'm fine with staying, but only if we act like we want to be a P4 program, not a cheap nickel and dime small market program

They have way more upside and NIL than Purdue.

I never said otherwise. But Purdue has had similar results to Indiana in the past. Neither was viewed as more than a mid tier Big10 program.

Purdue does have massive endowment money though.

Maybe they are finally going to invest.

Regardless they obviously have more assets at their disposal than we do.

Was thinking about it and thought of a few names that might be on Harper’s list if he follows the same formula he did with Odom (previous HC with some success) thought Tim Albin (Ohio) would have been a great hoice, but he was just hired at Charlotte. Obviously not saying all of these guys would be interested in us.

Rich Rodriguez (likely wouldn’t make a move like this)
Pat Fitzgerald
Nick Rolovich
Paul Chryst
Skip Holtz
Dan Mullen
Kliff Kingsbury
Charles Huff (Marshall)
Chuck Martin (Miami, OH)

I am sure there are plenty of others too. Just names that came to mind
