I'm hearing

we are likely to get Jefferson from St Mary's.... and I do think it's a worthwhile pick up on it's face. I don't think he's a world crusher but I think he's talented and can make a difference. Am concerned about a bit of duplication. He's not as soft as Cottrell, but he's not a bruiser either. It's that Matt Shaw mold a little bit. Doesn't mean they have value, but they are bigs that aren't exactly forces against size.

Next Year Thoughts

I think KK is back but there are other threads to talk about that, assuming he is back what needs to happen for next season.

Players:
Obviously who comes back, I think Dedan is back, Whaley is next most important returner. The other bigs. Does Hill get a redshirt, does he use it, does it matter? Does Cottrell have something to contribute? He had a few better stints at the end of the year but I don’t see him as a major contributor on a tournament team. Best case is a year removed he is way better and can give solid minutes off the bench. Does Jones get a Covid year, he is better than some other foul coverage we have had in the past.
The guards, Hicks, Nowell, and Johnson all are the same to me. All need to become better shooters, but if they left I think I would be fine and you could (not sure on will) be able to find replacement level players.

Signed players:
Cherry is a straight up replacement for Kalib Boone.
I would expect Evans to be similar to Hicks.
N’Diaye is a project and anything next year is a plus, imo.

Need:
Regardless of transfers outs, we need at least two solid shooters, preferably one that can play some point.
a wing to replace Rodriguez.

Offense:
We more off ball movement. We didn’t have shooters but played like drive kick, or post double kick was the best options. Rodriguez was pretty much worthless this year in this scheme. With the passing of Whaley and Thomas we should be looking to get people open off the ball moving to the basket.

Defense:
I really liked what they did during conference, some was personnel and some were changes in scheme. Biggest changes we need to be more physical on cuts, we need to teach/figure out how to bump the cutters like our players get bumped.

Assists to turnovers

After BC game 17-1 assists to turnovers was like wow, but tonight back to normal 2 assists to 8 turnovers.

No matter what, talent up grade at SG/SF with ball handling, moving without the ball and creating has to improve by 100%

407-344 assists to turnovers for the yr
Comes to 12.3 to 10 a game, that's indictment of KK offense and lack of ball handlers!
Whaley 26-51 ratio.

This has to be worst passing team at UNLV, granted the offense they run doesn't help.

Year 3: 21-13

So 18-14, 19,13, 21-13 for 58-40, so big yr 4 coming up. I give a C for the season.
I would say some stability to program since KK is going into year 4.
With portal and NIL in play, Thomas is key, he says he's coming back, you build around him from backcourt to front court.
Right now:
PG: Thomas,
SG: Norwell
SF: Hill/Evans?
PF: Whaley/Hill
C: James/Cottrell
so JJ/Hicks both can return? Both should be over recruited and tell JJ you can stay but not play.
What's needed backup PG at 6'3 and play along with Thomas.
SG/SF need 2 of them, starters athletic, can shoot but create off dribble, good passers
2 PF/C: 6'9 athletic, can face basket and hit from 15 feet and play down low.
Cottrell can shoot, can never have enough shooters to open court up.

So staff to me needs 3 new starters for sure, it's NCAA or bust for KK.

Kev tied with Billy Bayno

With the win tonight against Boston College. Coach Kev has tied Bayno for most post season wins in the post Tarkanian era.

1995- 96 - failed to make post season
1996 - 97 - TWO post season wins in NIT
1997 - 98 - made post season, no post season wins in NCAA
1998 - 99 - made post season, no post season wins in NIT
1999- 00 - made post season, no post season wins in NCAA
2000 - 01 - Fired after seven games.
