Rebels and Raiders

The Raiders have enough talent to be winning games. There can only be one reason they are not succeeding. It looks like the Rebel football stink has spread to the Raiders. No team can even be near the Rebels without getting smelly.

Mark Davis should pay the Rebels $20 Mil a year to go back to the Silver Bowl. Then he should build the Rebels their own Stadium on campus. When the season is over he should completely disinfect Allegiant and bring in Shamans and Voodoos Priests to eliminate all the bad Rebel JUJU.

Only then do the Raiders have a chance.

Sneaking suspicion

That if UNLV isn’t bowl eligible and they DON’T beat Reno, there will be a change.

It’s at that point of the contract. You have to extend or cut ties. If there’s any reason to cut ties, that’s the way it will go.

I don’t think that scenario will unfold but it certainly is possible and I hope not.

He hasn’t built up a ton of goodwill on campus so it makes it even easier.

Aloha

It must have been the second slice of upside down pineapple cake that led to your demise. Not only were you eliminated from bowl game consideration, yesterday day was also National Toilet Day and you being the aptly named runnin rebels, stole the show. Today is Sunday, it's your fun day, you don't have to run day. Runnin Rebels is so yesterday. Boreal Arroyo and the Light Brigade is kind of catchy. Bring your own bottle.

UNLV Grinder’s

As this season progresses CKK’s coaching philosophy is becoming apparent based on some key defensive statistics. When it comes to forcing turnovers UNLV is leading the nation and statistically no. 1 in forcing 24.25 to’s per game. UNLV is 6th in the nation in steals at 12.5 steals per game and 7th in the nation in turnover margin at a 8.5 ratio. There is nothing pretty about this style of play. But UNLV will win a lot of games if the trend continues with 8.5 more possessions per game than it‘s opponents.

Rap music

I totally loved the Dayton game but am already tired of the constant loud music , before, during and after the game. In my opinion most people go to a basketball game to hear college bands. Just the sound of a great band , which our Rebel band is… is soo energizing. I do not want to hear concert music when our whole band is sitting on their hands most of the game.

Main Event at T-Moblie

4 rank teams, if Tark was alive and at UNLV, Rebels would be playing tonight, at least I was alive when UNLV was top 5 team and UCLA was so scared of us, lol

Memories Memories, just maybe before I leave this earth, both basketball and football can schedule big time teams again to visit Vegas and beat them, you can have NHL, NFL all the pro sports and high ticket prices, but if UNLV ever becomes a top 15 program, hoops will average 16K a game and sell out all top weekend games and football might draw 40K and get P5 school for Labor Day every year, I can dream, then again were talking about making a commitment from UNLV administration, shaking my head in disgust.

Goals

Probably too early to talk about requirements for an NCAA bit but we did just beat a ranked team at the Mack for the first time since 2014.

I've always believed in realistic quantitative goals. With that in mind, what do the Rebels most likely need to do ( how many wins) to get to the dance?

It's almost a crap shoot to try to get a read this early on the number of spots we will get. But based on the last few years, I'm going with three - just for this post.

So, how do we get there?

1. Win the Tourney. This is where we have put our hopes almost yearly.
2. Lose in the finals and be in the conference's top three. ( with an acceptable NET ranking)
3. Lose in the semi's to the Tourney winner or the Conference winner and be in the conference's top three. (with an acceptable NET rating.)

So, how do we get in a position to not need to win the MWC Tourney ( i.e get a high enough Net)

A. Take care of business OOC. We already have a quality win. Beating Southern Ill, Washington State and USF would help as they are all ranked above us. Beating all three convincingly would really help. Also, we need to beat down the rest. Failing to cover when we are favorites counts against us in NET. With this schedule, losing two or three would most likely doom us to winning the Tourney.

B. Lose no more than 5 games in Conference. In the past 10 years, 5 losses guaranteed at least a third-place finish - and second-place half the time. Entering the Tourney fourth or lower would almost guarantee us having to win the Tourney.

If we go into the MWC tourney with @ 5 losses and win the Semi the NCAA selection committee would have a hard time turning us down. But drop more than one OOC game or lose six or more Conference games and we'd most likely need to win the Tourney.

UNLV picked 6th

UNLV fifth-year guard EJ Harkless thinks he might have the path to the NCAA Tournament figured out. A new arrival in Las Vegas this season, he spent the previous two seasons at Oklahoma.

During his first year as a Sooner, Harkless played for Lon Kruger, the former UNLV coach and father of current Rebel coach Kevin Kruger, during the coach’s final season. Oklahoma made the NCAA Tournament, and Harkless is looking to maintain that streak.

“I’m 100 percent with Coach Krugers and the tournament,” he said. “If it worked one time, it’s going to work again.”

Harkless, senior Luis Rodriguez — another UNLV newcomer — and Kevin Kruger all spoke at Mountain West men’s basketball media day Wednesday. The Rebels were picked to finish sixth in the conference’s preseason poll and didn’t have any players picked for the preseason all-conference team or the individual awards, but Kruger is happy with the state of his program.

“I do feel good about where we’re at,” Kruger said. “At this point in October, I think the guys are working hard. I think they’ve gotten better.”

The Rebels have lots of new faces, but have several questions surrounding the team — particularly on offense. UNLV’s 2021-22 leading scorer Bryce Hamilton departed, along with offensive contributors like Donovan Williams and Royce Hamm Jr. The Rebels also have several new faces on the team’s coaching staff, as each of Kruger’s top three assistants from last season were poached by Power Five schools.

Kruger and his new staff have already had a chance to preview this year’s team. The Rebels took a three-game preseason tour to Canada. The trip included a surprise loss to the University of British Columbia, but Kruger believes the team has made major improvements during training camp.

“Taking that information that we got (in Canada), blending it into the fall workouts and now the official practices … This is a group that’s gotten a lot better, consistently, since they’ve been together,” Kruger said.

Harkless, for example, wasn’t available in Canada as he was recovering from knee surgery. Kruger also mentioned late additions Shane Nowell, a guard,, and Karl Jones, a forward, hadn’t been fully incorporated and were still finding their roles in the system during the preseason tour.

The tour also gave the Rebels a chance to spend time together and continue building their chemistry. Besides the new staff, UNLV added seven scholarship players this season. It’s not quite the massive turnover from Kruger’s first year with the Rebels, but has still created a steep learning curve for this team both on and off the court.

Rodriguez said the team tries to spend as much time together as possible. The Rebels bond over extra shots after practice. They hang out at each other’s apartments and go to the movies. The former Ole Miss wing said even getting lunch with a teammate can go a long way toward building camaraderie.

“I think our bonding is going pretty well,” he said. “I think we mesh together.”

Must win

Not to bring the schedule up again, but UNLV is 2-0 and yet the game against Dayton is pretty much a must win. Probably our one chance at a good OOC win. I don’t really think we have a chance at an at-large even with a win but for sure have no chance without one. The losses by Boise St and Fresno so far really hurt.

Offer Dedan Thomas Jr - Visit

Seems like his visit went well. Made a UNLV video (we've seen this before from recruits that didn't commit), but some sites are starting to lean UNLV. A commit from Dean Thomas would be HUGE. Anybody also know if he might move into the 2023 class?

Upcoming games

Looking at the schedule, which we know is really weak, it looks like S. Illinois is a pretty decent team, and will give us a game. They knocked off Oklahoma State on the road, so they should be pretty respectable. I don't know how Ok. St. is this year, but they're usually pretty decent.

Aside from that game, we won't have much until mid December in terms of competition. What do you hope we see in the next month from the team?

I'm looking forward to the Rebs getting Cottrell healthy and back with the team, and the offense getting more efficient.
