Keeping Odom.

We are underestimating what a shit show the PAC raid had on our league.

Once the traitors leave for the 2026 season ( after next year ) I think it will be much more difficult for us to get a bid. We'll be like Conference USA or the SUN belt. We will have to compete with the PAC/AAC/and more winner for the bid. We'll be like Army. (Win out and need to play ND to get in) Even if we win out in our league it will be so weak that we'll have to schedule 3 or 4 OOC games against P4 opponents just to differentiate ourselves. And how many of those will come to allegiant? It's not as though we will pay them to come. What will be in it for them? For them to lose to us would be a disaster.

And aren't the attendance numbers we need to pay coach way too much of a dream? IMO, our normal attendance will be much closer to our Fresno State number (24,000) than out Reno number ( 40,000 ) Our home schedule will come from NMSU, SJSU, Wyoming, Reno, El Paso, Air Force and Hawaii. Some of those games will get up in the 30's but others will be in the 20's. Especially in the inevitable year we aren't competing for first place.

It could be there is some back door, highly secret, pinky swear agreement for us to get to the Big 12. But if not, and I were coach Odom, I'd leave based on the arguments above. Unless there is something not written, our league is going down. If I were Odom I wouldn't captain the sinking ship.

I agree for the most part but I think with the success of the last two years, the 'floor' for attendance will go up a few thousand despite the less appealing conference schedule.

I mean aside from Boise I don't think people get anymore excited about playing USU vs UNM. Heck we can probably get more for a Hawaii game than SDSU.

Hey Coug, what's the status of the Pac media contract these days? I know they brought in that consultant a couple months ago, but I haven't heard anything since. Has there been any news from your end?
Seems like they might want to work faster on adding teams... You know they're a few months away from just inviting NMST to avoid the conference dissolving on them... When's that 2nd league year begin/end?

The question for me is whether or not unlv can pony up almost 3 million for Odom. If we can afford it, I don’t think there’s any question.

Just my opinion and reading the tea leaves, I think if Odom is serious about setting roots and AD Harper enjoys being an administrator at UNLV. Those two will make it work.

I would guesstimate Odom will get around 2.5 million/year, for 6-7 years, heavy incentives to make the playoffs/ league championships etc. and an additional million to add to the salary for his staff.

This COULD be a similar situation as Utah, where they invested in their own coaches and made it to the Pac12. Invest in Odom, show the Big12 we’re a serious school. Again, just my thoughts and zero inside info.

Well, there was an initial maintenance of what he had been doing, except recruiting and fan interest went up … and expectations. Then it dropped a bit. Not to today’s levels, but it did drop.

But if the school is luke warm, boosters are luke warm … whether it’s right or wrong they felt that way … makes no sense to get into a bidding war you can’t win, unless you wanted to do the guy a favor, which they didn’t.
I know we could not outbid for CLK ,but how they handled it afterwards is what gets me. So inept.

Keeping Odom.

This is how I view the next few months will go regardless of how UNLV finishes the season.

1- Odom's name is going to be mentioned in every article written by every outlet about every coaching vacancy.

2- 'Insiders' are going to post on social media they are hearing (Insert school) has been in contact with Barry Odom and 'could be' finalizing a deal soon.

And one of three things will actually happen

1-Odom will leave because an opportunity presented itself he can't pass up.

2- Odom isn't contacted because schools decide to go a different direction or it isn't a job he has interest in for whatever reason.

3- Odom stays despite being linked (reliably) to P4 openings which he turns down. If Odom turns down a job making more money at a place where he could have success, it would tell me a move to the BIG12 for UNLV is actually in play.
You forgot #4. WSU and UNLV trade head coaches. Ours makes - I believe - about $2.7M after taking a budget-prompted 10% pay cut. He was at $3M. And the COL in Pullman, WA is less than Vegas I am certain. :)

The CFP Committee sees it is in their best interest to give the SEC & B10 something like $20 million, the B12 and ACC will get about $12 million, and any G5 school that gets in will make about $6 million. These are for the schools that get into the 12 team playoff.

The CFP also gives all G5 schools an extra $1.85 million. WSU and OSU were going to get less but kicked up a storm of whining and will get more than the other G5 schools. I believe I had seen the dollar figure somewhere around $3 million for them but, maybe @Loyal Coug1
would know.

I'm working off of memory here so the actual dollar figures need to be looked up for verification. I think I'm close though.
Your recollection of the Pac-2's whining and subsequent 2-year $3M allocation sounds correct.

The CFP format is proving itself well structured with the MWC helping to create a true win-and-your-in championship game. It’s really tough to beat a team twice in the same season and three times over two seasons. I also like how UNLV plays on the road, they just seem to be more focused. Add in DeJesus and a more seasoned HMW and we have a fair shot. Hopefully we’re fully healthy and we can leave it all on the field.
McDuffie as well. He was just coming back off the injury and wasnt fully healthy and integrated into the defense. Huge lift to the linebacker group being able to float with the TEs and get pressure on Madsen which we didnt do. Woodard will be on Jeanty spy duty, but theyll be much more ready for the Madsen scrambles out of pressure as well..

Perhaps, but there wasn’t a strong consensus at UNLV or among the boosters either in fighting to keep him. With Odom, I think 100% of fans and admin want him at UNLV. It was way more lukewarm with Lon K, especially within tight of the university. Some were not pleased with many things.
I was not on board with getting into a bidding war with Oklahoma over LK. I was pretty vocal about it on the conference board and I was in the minority.

He embarrassed the fans with his last game vs Illinois and Chuck calling us the walking rebels. I didn’t want LK back because he recruited so lazy, hence the nickname golf course Lon. Then when we hired Dave Rice, he did better job coaching the same team than Kruger. Took the team that got blown out by Illinois and defeated a #1 ranked blue blood on neutral court.

No I didn’t want to pay even more money for a guy that was barely doing enough. LK has stated he was surprised that unlv didn’t make a competitive offer, and I think that motivated LK to do better at Oklahoma.

this will be the case.. UNLV insiders will want to claim they know something others dont, throw mud at the big openings and hope it sticks so they can sell clicks to their articles.
Again, I dont think that he leaves anymore. I think hes got a great opportunity here, hes playing for a conference title and a CFP birth in 2 years. Hopefully the message is clear early that he isnt interested in leaving and the calls dont come. I think its interesting that last year at this time we had rumors of Marion interviewing all over the place and this year we arent hearing those. We know his name is brought up, but there seems to be a different focus heading into the championship game this year.

The big thing that UNLV needs to address based on that last Boise game is the pass protection. They were rushing with 4 and getting a lot of pressure on HMW. I'm not sure what the best thing to do is, but change some schemes or play calls, maybe use more screen plays, etc. I'm not an OC, so I'm not sure the best way to address it, but they were in our back field a lot it seemed.

I just checked the box score and they had 6 sacks against UNLV and a huge interception at the end of the 1st half that led to an easy TD. If we can improve on the sacks allowed and not turn the ball over, we should be in pretty good shape.
