It's all G5....

SOS is SOS.
Computers can tell the difference between Austin or Laramie either.

SDSU has been a top3 MW team historically. To think that they are going to be a perpetual bottom feeders given everything they have is pretty short sighted.

When it comes for that coveted playoff spot SOS will matter. We may have to play 6 90+ teams. Thr PAC may have 1 or 2. That makes a ridiculous difference.

The AAC was hurt by their SOS this year despite their records. UNLV this season looked better in comparison

Again it is G5. But there will be a difference. In both competition and payout.

Oh money does matter. Huge gap for everyone not in the P4. But there is a difference between maybe 5 a year vs 10+.

Oh yeah say goodbye to our NCAAT credits once the legacy payouts run out.
The only reason that the AAC wasn't in front of the MWC was due to BSU having a very high rating due to the one game played verse Oregon. Remove BSU and the rest of the MWC didn't do anything. When the MWC breaks to the PAC, they will have BSU and a bunch of SCRUBS (sorry, pun intended!). Depending on being able to get NIU and one other team from back east, I do not believe there will be that noticeable of a difference between the MWC and the PAC on a national level. The bottom line is that UNLV must be as good as they were this year or better. As for BSU, remove the wins over UNLV, and they didn't beat a single team ranked in the top 40.

way too early to press the panic button. Jet is staying and others will come back + Mullen will get his guys in eventually.

It’s also very early in the process, lots of teams still bowling and there’s the CFP. There’s a lot of moving parts here so it will be a process before Mullen gets his staff in place and players in.
Those ESPN highlights, and Pat McAfee praising the team help a lot too.

Wonder how many would be in the portal if Odom had stayed? I’m sure there wouldn’t be as many, but the reality is many still would have. That is, unfortunately, the nature of college football today.
Win win for them. Get to play for a coach they love, AND get paid a little bit more. Purdue also increased their NiL budget too.

If Purdue participates in revenue sharing, they'll hit the max allotment based on their school's athletic revenue. They'll have 105 eligible athletes that will receive $148,861 a year. That's completely separate from additional NiL.

It may up being a near complete rebuild from a personnel standpoint. But at least it wouldnt be from a perception standpoint.

It is easier to tunrover a roster these days but hard to be super successful right away that way. Look and Deion that first year. A lot of buzz, but they ended up being not very good that year. This year was much better.

Even before Odom left I thought we would likely take a step a back from graduation alone. A lot of things lined up to make this past season what it was.

I think we will be good next season, I think we will be a bowl team and still probably be in the mix for the MW championship game. I just don't think we will be winning double digit games

We do need to try to talk some players back and of course hit some doubles, triples, and least a solo home run or 2 in the portal.
Good next season? I think the expectations will be high as ever which I like but we are gonna be in serious revamp mode.

I actually disagree a bit with the O line.
Having 2 preseason all confernce tackles I expected more.
Our run game was heavily elevated by scrambles. We struggled to run between the tackles most of the time. The run game performance was a big part of our red zone struggles.
Pass pro wasn't great either as you mentioned.
That's why I wasn't terribly upset with the loss of Vice.
That's a great point. I went back and I compared 2023 to 2024 and removed all QB yards, even the designed run ones since I don't have a great way to separate the data. In 2023 that number totaled to 2236 yards while in 2024, it was 2403 yards. It was better, but 167 yards isn't a tremendous improvement.

Yeah the bedwetting over not being in the PAC is weird. It's like people don't realize that nobody in the midwest, south or east see a huge difference in playing Fresno or New Mexico. They don't. Like some east coast media pollster is going to dock UNLV massively for not playing in the PAC instead of the MWC. It's frankly, laughable.
I get it, but most, if not all of the argument for UNLV going to the PAC are centered around the “long term”. So now you have to define “long term”.

Let’s call the next 2.5 years as short term and everything after that as long term.

In the short term, UNLV will make more money than any of the other MW or PAC schools. How much remains to be seen, but even if it gets settled to half, it’s gonna be a large amount of new money. Add to that NOT losing money by leaving and it’s a HUGE difference. On the low side it’s a difference of at bare minimum $15-$18 million difference.

Is the PAC media contract going to be $5mil more per year? I doubt it, but if it is then you’ve cost yourself an extra $35 million minus $15-$18 mill over the course of 7 years… $17-$20 million, so $2.5-$3 mill per year.

So to me that’s the worst you could do over the course of the next 7 years. I don’t necessarily see that as a HUGE mistake but maybe some will, which is fair.

But that also assumes that everything else in the college football world stays static, and no one believes it will. That’s also only factoring dollars statically as well.

Cash NOW is way more important than longer term and it would take a full 4 years or more before the dollars catch up and start to cost.

Flexibility in the short term is also huge. Going to the PAC would have handcuffed UNLV to not just be able to leave, but to be able to continue to build a product worthy of being invited to leave.

Who knows what dominoes are going to fall, but they are sure as hell going to be falling in the next couple years. I’d rather be in position to be able to take advantage of those moves. Worst case is we’d end up in the PAC in 8 years.

That's very true as well. Our O line great this season at the run game, but towards the end the pass protection became a bit of an issue. I m not sure if that was a player type issue, or a scheme thing. Statistically, Williams got sacked way more this year than Maiava did last year. In 2023, we were sacked 26 times losing 161 yards. This year we got sacked 41 times losing 283 yards.

The G5 currently is considered.
  • American Athletic Conference (AAC)
  • Conference USA (CUSA)
  • Mid-American Conference (MAC)
  • Mountain West Conference (MW)
  • Sun Belt Conference (SBC)
I believe B 12 is a pipe dream. I meant the PAC will replace us and I was concerned we would drop below the Sun Belt or MAC. The MAC gets $ 2.5 mil per school and their deal gets re- negotiated in two years. I don't believe we will get more than $ 3 mil per school. G5 is probably a meaningless term, and getting more so each year as we fall further and further behind. But it's interesting to consider.

The PAC will just be G6. The powers that be aren't handing out anymore auto bids by recognizing them as a power conference.

They'll be battling the other 'Group of' conferences for the same bid.

The biggest area where rebuilds are difficult is on the O line. Its difficult to get 5 guys to gel and be a cohesive unit. But that was going to be the case no matter what with pretty much everyone being a senior. Hopefully some of those guys who got relief reps this season stick on. Keeping Jet is huge, hoping him and the transfer from Utah give our run game a chance.
I would add DL to this because we have a hard time getting decent DL even being in the MWC. I would like to see OL, DL, WR, QB, CB and Pass Rushers from decent conferences if possible. If he can find good guys in these spots, he should be able to fill the other positions from our holdovers and other decent G5 guys!

Very true.
But a spread option O line may require different type of players

Both Branch bros? Wow, that would be something. No idea as to the validity.

Also, with regards to that QB, I'm not saying he wouldn't start since I know nothing about him, but he hasn't done anything at the college level yet, so it might be risky for Mullen to put all of his trust in a QB that hasn't played much at the D1 level yet
A few of the UNLV "insiders" all thought it was a possibility when they announced they were portal bound. But they arent coming cheap.

Im not worried. there will be thousands of players in the transfer portal looking for new homes. We have a very attractive new home with a coach who has a history of being very successful and a schedule that screams "Come win and play for a National championship" which a lot of these guys in the portal will be looking at. Turnover is kind of the name of the game these days in the portal era, especially with a competitive team. Just look at even the bad teams in conference and see how many players they are losing... Itll be key to re-recruit some of the guys entering the portal, but also there alot of players out there needing places to play and time.
