Utah State: Game Predictions

This game will be tough.
How many times has UNLV been in this spot before and got blasted! I remember CSU was 0-7 or something like that and we got boat-raced. So many times UNLV has been set to turn the corner only to get smacked in the face back to another losing season. I was happy after last week because usually our humiliation would have been last week against North Texas but this week, I hope the light at the end of the tunnel is not a Utah State freight train!
UNLV at 2-1? They’ve probably been in that position 7 or 8 times in their D1 history.

I think UNLV also has an 0-9 record vs freshman QBs making their college debuts filling in for the 2 QBs on the depth chart ahead of them that got injured the week before, basically every time UNLV has been in a “no way they can lose” situation, they lose.

My niece's husband plays for USU, I spoke with him this evening. He said USU is really focused on UNLV and not even talking about the BYU game. He told me 100% guarantee USU wins this week. So of course I made him a bet and I really don't want to have to wear USU gear all next week so UNLV had better win.
But after speaking with him I think we are in for a tough game, we need to jump out early and get in their heads quick.
Let's go Rebels, 3-1 would be an awesome start to the season

the good news for you is this guy I’m sure 100% guaranteed a win vs Weber St too and they got their asses handed to them.

Homer writeup on USU practice for the past two weeks. Didn't know the last time they lost two in a row they came back to beat us and go on a 5 game win streak to win the conference.

I remember going up there with football with Hauck or it might have been Sanchez. It’s not an easy place to play. At least they’ll be able to fly right into Logan.

Suddenly the same USU that was blown out of the water by lower division Weber State is telling us they are focused and 100% guaranteeing they will beat UNLV? Weber State beat USU like they were a top 25 team playing a bottom 10 team! If UNLV plays like they have the first three games, I expect a 2TD or more margin of victory. Based on what I have seen so far USU is in the bottom third of the conference.

Objectively you look at this game and you have to give UNLV the edge.

UNLV crushed their lower division team, Utah State got crushed at home in theirs

UNLV beat their G5 team by over 20 points, Utah State won by 9. Safe to say that UNT is a much better team than UConn.

They got blanked by 'Bama, we had a close loss to Cal. Not much of a comparison there though.

We've had Offensive player of the week twice now.

etc, etc.

BUT.. it is only 3 games and it is hard to take too much away. Tradition does mean something in football. Ours has been bad, theirs is much better.

There is nothing from on field perfomance this season that would suggest that USU should win this game at all, even at home.

But I can't say that I think UNLV will win with any sort of certainty.

I'm wouldn't be terribly surprised to see anything from a 1 score UNLV loss to a 3 TD UNLV win.

Checked with our team. They’re focused on USU.

It will be a tough game. Any game on the road for us is, and most teams. Altitude will slow us down and tire us. I just like our running attack against their front 7. I think we go for over 200 on the ground this week and retain possession.

We need to cause turnovers on defense. Their QB is not really accurate. Especially under pressure.
I like our ability to stop the run. Just hope we have the depth to stop it throughout the game.

I remember going to a UNM game in Jason Thomas’s senior season and we were going up against a 4th string QB who I believe was their fullback. They ran the same wildcat-esque play 52 times and gashed us for like 400 yards on the ground. A win we needed to make a bowl game.

Similar situation the last time BYU came here. They had a RB at QB and looked like Tom Brady.

I do not have enough fingers and toes, to count the number of times the Rebs, have had an upcoming game early in the season where the board was a near consensus that 'we should be able to beat (insert opponent)...

And we get curb stomped.

Wyoming a few years ago comes to mind.

USU might be down but they aren't at UNM levels.

We haven't beat Utah State since 2008, when they were the doormats of the conference. They are not as good this year as last, but Blake Anderson is a tough coach who has as many bowl wins as our program history (if you count the forfeited California Bowl), and has been to more bowl games than this program has in it's history...and he's coming off a bye week. And despite where they're at now, they were picked ahead of us and rated higher than us preseason by every media outlet there is. We're playing on the road at a high altitude for the first time this season. And lets face it, UNLV traditionally will let you down at exactly this time historically because you were dumb enough to have hope.

Aggies 28
UNLV 24

Fingers crossed I'm wrong, this is a W you need if you're serious about bowl eligibility

Some good analysis by a USU writer. Certainly better than our journalists...I thought Brum, Bailey and Friel are all sophomores?

They are all sophomores.

“USU couldn’t break free from Weber’s press/man coverage….”

if we played a press man coverage, but we don’t for most of the game. My biggest concern is the deep ball (no surprise) and the TE up the seam. I am also concerned that USU is going to through the book at us play wise. They had a bye week and had plenty of time to work on “trick plays” and wrinkles that wouldn’t show up on film. I still feel like we should win this game, though.

I'd love to see Rebel defense to start up immediately how it did vs UNT. Rattle Bonner(?) and get him rushed and uncomfortable in the pocket.

I do think you nailed it... although I really dislike the term trick plays (I see you put it in quotes... so maybe you do too). Really discredits what a guy like Chris Petersen up at Boise State did. Creative guy.

But if I'm Blake Anderson, this is the time to bring that out. Home crowd when you're being doubted against a conference opponent you expect to be better than. But if those plays happen and fail, my will this year's nosedive for USU continue.

Is USU better than UNT? I don’t think they are

Last year yeah. This year not so sure. But they are at home and their season is absolutely on the line. Lose to Rebs, with BYU on tap Thursday. You're potentially staring at a 1-4 start...

I think the Rebs have a very good shot at winning this game. I'm just reluctant to say it should be easy or an automatic win..

Utah State always show up vs UNLV in Football.
I think we drop this one UNLV 21 Utah State 24

With UNLV, has that ever mattered?

If we had Brumfield last year against USU, I think we win that game. I like the group we have this year that we didn’t have last year when we played them. That’s the X factor for me.

For sure. Brumfield would likely have made a difference

I think a lot will depend on how the early portion of the game starts.

Rebs force an early turnover, or a few three and outs, that crowd will get restless. I really like our chances in that scenario.

Game stays close throughout, not so much.

Cannot let USU hang around or gain confidence..

I was wrong on the UNT prediction..

Although I think UtSt is much worse than last year, I just don’t see them staying in this funk all year long.. The Rebs definitely have a squad to compete and win, I just don’t see the Aggie’s dropping this at home.. Hope I’m wrong again..

USU 34

The UNLV football team we have this year is unlike any team we have had in the last decade. There have been a bunch of years where UNLV has started 2-1, but this is mostly due to the fact they played two really bad teams who they beat and one decent team that destroyed us. In fact in most of the season in the last 2-3 decades, UNLV struggled to win the two games in comparison to two blowout wins this season and a loss that came down to the last minute of the game to be decided. The last time, about a decade ago, where UNLV went 2-1, those two wins were against 1-11 Texas El-Paso and 5-6 (lower division) Prairie View A&M (both were easy wins).

According to ESPN matchup predictor UNLV is favored to go 6-3 in the final 9 games. UNLV is a 40.2% to 59.8% dog verse Air Force, a 44.4% to 55.6% dog to Fresno State, and a big dog to Notre Dames. Based on the statistics UNLV is either favored or only a small underdog in 8 of their final 9 games.

You would need to go back to 1984 to find a season UNLV started 3-0. UNLV has gone 2-1 12 times and 3-0 once since becoming a division I-A team.

When is the last time we had a great QB, a great RB, and great receivers in the same season? Normally we end up with one or two good players and a bunch of marginal players to make up the team. When is the last time UNLV has been able to consistently stop a team on 4th down? When is the last time UNLV played better in the second half than the other team? UNLV has outplayed all 3 opponents in the second half.

If UNLV loses to Utah State, this will be back to business as usual, and I am tired of business as usual for the last 35+ years!

Thank you for some historical data. Our coach is one of the highest if not the highest paying coach in the MWC. This is somewhat expected by how he is paid.

I believe he is the second highest paid coach by a small amount. A win against Utah State could be a huge kick start to get more fans to the games. If UNLV wants to be considered during the conference musical chair game, then the must not only win games, they must also show the ability to increase attendance. 30K plus would be a good start!

Game Day!!
Honestly I’m rather nervous about this game. Hoping the players don’t have ND in the back of their minds. Pivotal game for the program. A win sets them directly on a path to competing for the MWC championship. A loss and we’re questioning whether we’ll make a bowl. For USU it’s likely their entire season on the line after two bad losses. Hoping our boys are up to the challenge. With my Rebel red-colored glasses I’ll predict 27-24 UNLV. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

USU looks like a bad team this year but starting conference play off with a road win would be a huge W for this program. I want to believe the Rebels are turning the corner and we get it done today. I got UNLV 31-27.

I really think we will get a good indication early on. We should crush them with the offensive line. If the backs are averaging 2.5 yards per carry, it will be a long day. But I think it will be much higher than that.

Edit: I said I wouldnt predict a win, but forget that... prediction: Rebels win 34 - 24

I accidentally deleted my post whole post basically instead of hitting quote lol...but in my original prediction I did call the score to the point!

The 4th quarter was a little nerve racking sitting there in the stands but felt great to leave with the W.

There was even a small group of about 15 or so doing the rebel chant. Section 216 I think it was.

The second half didn't go as well as I expected, so they didn't reach the 2-3 TD win I expected. Either way, it is nice to be 3-1.
The only times UNLV has started 3-1 or better is 2008, 2003 started 4-1, 1992 3-1, 1986 3-1, 1984 (team went 11-2), 1981 3-1, 1980 5-1, 1979 (9-1-2) - only lost 1 game

It would be nice to win the next few games!

Ya, beat UNM/Hawaii back to back last year.. So when was the last time we won 3 straight? I’m not looking it up.. lol
To be honest, it might be Harvey Hyde. They haven't had enough 6 win teams to give me any confidence that they have won 3 consecutive games.

Actually, I'm gonna post this then look it up. Caleb may have won 4 straight as starter back in 2013.

Edit: he got brought in during the CMU game. Then beat WIU, UNM, and Hawaii.
