The UNLV football team we have this year is unlike any team we have had in the last decade. There have been a bunch of years where UNLV has started 2-1, but this is mostly due to the fact they played two really bad teams who they beat and one decent team that destroyed us. In fact in most of the season in the last 2-3 decades, UNLV struggled to win the two games in comparison to two blowout wins this season and a loss that came down to the last minute of the game to be decided. The last time, about a decade ago, where UNLV went 2-1, those two wins were against 1-11 Texas El-Paso and 5-6 (lower division) Prairie View A&M (both were easy wins).
According to ESPN matchup predictor UNLV is favored to go 6-3 in the final 9 games. UNLV is a 40.2% to 59.8% dog verse Air Force, a 44.4% to 55.6% dog to Fresno State, and a big dog to Notre Dames. Based on the statistics UNLV is either favored or only a small underdog in 8 of their final 9 games.
You would need to go back to 1984 to find a season UNLV started 3-0. UNLV has gone 2-1 12 times and 3-0 once since becoming a division I-A team.
When is the last time we had a great QB, a great RB, and great receivers in the same season? Normally we end up with one or two good players and a bunch of marginal players to make up the team. When is the last time UNLV has been able to consistently stop a team on 4th down? When is the last time UNLV played better in the second half than the other team? UNLV has outplayed all 3 opponents in the second half.
If UNLV loses to Utah State, this will be back to business as usual, and I am tired of business as usual for the last 35+ years!
