Offensive style under Mullen

depends on his QB. He changes style to fit the quarterback. You’ll see different sets with a pocket passer vs a qb with good legs.

He will adjust.

He’s his own OC, as well …

A coach that can adapt instead of a one trick pony that fits squares into round pegs. I like it.
That is what made Bellichick so successful fit the scheme to the talent not force the talent into the scheme.

Does he call his own plays?

A couple of things real help us with this transition.

Marion had an offense that didn't rely too much on personnel. QB being mobile certainly helped as we saw this year.

The other is more money for NIL, we can turnover a chunk of players in the transfer portal to better fit what Mullen wants to do.

Also Mullen was immediately successful at Miss St. and Florida.

But Mullen has a system, a system that requires certain types of players. We lost a lot this year anyway, but he is likely not as adaptive as Marion, because 90% of coaches want their guys and certain archetypes.

At least with QB, Mullen likes a mobile QB so that helps with a guy like Ochoa. Though Muleen's offense will be more intricate in terms of reads for the QB so there is that.

Defensively Odom was also very open, our new DC may need a certain type of player as well.

There could be some growing pains.

We are losing a ton of talent anyway. Odom helped our depth a ton so there are potentially some really promising players that can step in. We just can't let too many get away in the portal.

I wouldn't count on Ochoa sticking around. Mullen is going to be sought out by QBs in the portal. We might not afford some of them, but there will be plenty of interest for 2 reasons...
Immediate playing time
History of turning QBs into professional prospects.
I imagine the offense will be high scoring as well, but capable of running balanced sets and running clock. Jets going to have a lot of fun with this system.

I’m not worried, but concerned about defense …

I think this years team was “better” than the previous year because the defense was better. Much better. And so was special teams. I feel like offensively we weren’t quite as good as last season.

I do think the offense under Mullen will be better. You don’t put up those kinds of numbers in the SEC without being pretty damn good offensively … and that’s against much better competition.

But we may slide a bit defensively. This year, the Rebs were a bit feast or famine, even half to half … there were times it was very good, times when the flaws showed too much. But I thought it was enough overall. Our defense “lost” a game vs Syracuse but it was really strong in the second half of Kansas (allowed us a win) and vs Boise (gave us opportunity to win), other games really strong first halves … a couple pretty complete. I do think we will slide a bit defensively. We lose some really good players and it just doesn’t seem to be the prevailing focus.

Defense will be portal heavy again this year. It will have to be.

I think every effort should be made to get Tony Grimes to stay. Camac started to flash the second half of the season, I think he plays a bigger role next season.

Camac may have been the most improved player. Mcduffie should return, right? Heard good things about Laster, did he RS? Correa has a good shot.

I’ve gotta go over the roster but will probably wait for the dust to settle with the portal.

Those three should be back.

Pre portal with this many graduations I would have had some concerns.

Now with the portal, not so much. This is becoming the new norm.

Based on Gael's hudl, and watching a couple of his games we know he can run. His passing though is a little bit suspect. Lets compare him to Jayden Maiava. They both put up similar passing yards as high school seniors. Maiava threw for 2027 yards on 201 attempts. Gael threw for 2107 yards on 219 attempts. Both had similar completion percentages (.62 for Gael and .60 for Maiava). The big difference is when it comes to TD/int rate. Maiava threw for 24 touch downs, and was only intercepted 4 times. Gael threw for 15, but was intercepted 7 times.

Now, with that interception ratio, you could explain some of it in the difference of O lines. Liberty had one of the best O lines in the city when Maiava was there. Gael's looked like a standard high school one.

They both have similar play abilities where they like the deep pass. Gael is much better at running, but similar to Maiava, he will try to force a play to happen and put the ball in danger. Who knows how much Gael has developed during his red shirt year, but I think we have to look at the portal for a least three Qbs.

He usually runs some variant of the spread option or regular spread. His teams do a great job at attacking the field and finding weak points. It depends on his personnel, but expect a lot of up-tempo offense similar to the Go-Go.

For me it's 70% portal, 30% hs. You REALLY want high schoolers that COULD be first or second team on depth chart. Not of the mind to recruit just to have them sit, learn, then leave when we've spent the time training them up for someone else. Recruit kids who can play now.

Yeah. Even if it's portal guys that haven't seen significant action they're already acclimated to college life, they've been through spring and fall camps.

My only issue with consistently going portal heavy is it can get a little tricky layering your classes. Similiar to what we see this year now with a ton of seniors. You still need some HS guys to develop for a year or two plus some portal guys with multiple years of eligibility remaining.
