Odom and Purdue

Who cares?

They are full of shit. Chase the bag, be a loser in the BigTen. Odom was crying about being fired by Mizzou last week and then does this. He’s chasing the bag. Not a legacy. That’s fine, but you look at Mizzou, they have done A LOT better since they fired Odom and he’s been crying about it ever since.
Yeah, all that was just talk. Same goes for paycheck chasing and "I wanted this job before they knew they wanted me" BS...

It’s all BS and coach speak. Odom is just another coach to me, never understood why Mizzou and Arkansas always shit on him but now I do.

What a dumb decision to go to Purdue. That school has a bad NIL system in place and impossible to win at. You could say it’s a worse situation than unlv. He’ll be crying next year about how great it was at unlv and how he got the ball rolling here.

I get it but…This isn’t like Penn State or Michigan or Ohio State. They are a bottom tier Big 10 school, and if he ever sniffs the CFP with them, I would be just as shocked as what he did here at UNLV.
Small schools are barely hanging on. The larger conferences have resources that far exceed anything we can dream up. Our admin has no idea how to bring us to the next level and it showed when they decided to stay in the garbage mountain west and take a short term pay day ahead of the future. We all have to hope Odom showed other coaches the blue print to winning here and hopefully we can attract better coaches because of that. The transfer portal has been game changing so I won’t put it past any new HC from doing good year one.

Well, Purdue fired their last coach after 2 seasons, so I’d say the window for Barry to turn the program around has a very small window.
I'm a Purdue fan and just came here to read about Odom the last few days. I hate that you guys lost your coach. It's happened to Purdue before and it isn't any fun.

This last season was eye-opening and very bad. Purdue was the worst football team I've ever seen this past season. There was no way Purdue could *not* fire Ryan Walters after this season. As another Purdue fan said "we look like a 5-year-old soccer team with half the players running the wrong direction." Purdue had it's worst loss ever in September (66-7 to Notre Dame), only to surpass that against the hated rivals, IU, 66-0 last weekend. Purdue would have finished near the bottom (if not at the bottom) in the Mountain West this year. Odom got fire after going 6-6 at Mizzou, which would not happen at Purdue. If Walters had won 3 or 4 games this year (or, really, if we'd just been competitive against middle of the pack and bottom tier Big 10 teams), he would not have been fired.

At any rate, I hope you guys can get a great coach and continue the success you've had the last couple of years.

He's taking the money! Purdue bottom feeder job in big 10. He live or die on transfers. I wish him luck. I guess Harper had no cash.

Forget big 12 everything. Being big dog of dirt crap mwc in two years means nothing. At least kk can get extension, crap.

A little surprised since I thought he could be more selective. Purdue is a tough job, especially now. Sucks for us, but he made our job a MUCH more desirable. As long as we don’t make the wrong hire, we should be fine. Will be a different looking team though. Going to be a lot of movement within the portal (unless they promote from within)

He will bomb at Purdue. Collect the cash and be a loser. I can’t root for the guy anymore. Don’t care what he does.
I don't think this is a guarantee at all. He's a really good coach who has a method of running an entire program and doesn't seem to have any identifiable vices. If a coach could bring UNLV to relevance then his method should work at most places. He'll get Purdue to the mid of the Big 10 within three years. ( Two years ago they had 7 wins with 5 of those big 10) Purdue had zero Big 10 wins this year and were totally blown out several times. ( Notre Dame 66-7, Wisconsin 52-6, Ohio State 45-0, Illinois 66-0) He'll get 1-2 wins next year but more importantly, his teams won't quit and have no more 50 point losses. After that, it will depend on how much NIL they can generate.

That’s their problem, they had Walters who was on the Mizzou staff under Odom. Walters had no NIL at Purdue.

Not much. Couple mill, maybe.
Couple million is better than nothing and add BO’s existing salary it gets into the convo with top G5 coaches. As others have said here key is not to rush into a decision. From an AD perspective we’re light years ahead of the game compared to this same situation with previous ADs.

This job was a stunt to rehab his head coaching career. Had he not lost the last 3 games last year he would have been gone a season ago.

There is an element of fools gold here. Yes, the wins and success have been nice…BUT…We never beat a top 50 team the last 2 years. We have a big advantage in the conference with a world class city, stadium, football only facility. I feel like relative to our conference we’ve done what we are supposed to. If a competent hire is put in place, the bowl games should continue if we just golf at par.

Charlie did it as a retirement extension, so did Rollie … LK did it to revitalize his career. Odom, same thing as Lon.

F me. I had planned to catch up on work today… Wife going with her friends to see Wicked. Kids got plans. Now I can’t stop scrolling for info. Meanwhile I haven’t felt this depressed about UNLV athletics since I woke up after the 1991 Final Four.

Knowing this was agreed upon before the MWCC, what was Odom going to do had we won and were going to the CFP? Hate to even ask the next question, but was it in his best interest to lose? Not assuming anything. It just raises some what ifs.

A team that didn’t look focused coached by a coach who clearly wasn’t focused…

It’s funny, I saw Odom walk off the bus in Boise for the presser wearing suit & tie. I had never seen him in suit & tie.
My first thought… That’d doesn’t fit with the “stick to your habits” mentality.
My second thought… Something had changed with Odom.

Odom didn’t thank unlv on his way out. First statement was how excited he was to be in a football rich culture or some shit. Slinging the same garbage over there.

If I’m offered 2-3x as much pay, I’m gone. And I’m a loyal type of guy (but work burned out that loyalty years ago).

I think we’d all take the upgrade in pay and leave our coworkers, etc, behind …
I get it but his words ring hallow now and his crying over being fired at Mizzou really hits different. The fact they are doing better without him really bothers him. They don’t miss him at Arkansas either.

Chase the bag, become a footnote at a program will bring lots of regret in the future. He’s not going to do well at Purdue.

He’s gone. We all accept it now.

That being said, Odom has been a > $1M earner for several years now. He had to set up investment accounts, buy assets, etc. throughout his life. He should be set for life and I would have said that before he came here.

How much does one need before using happiness and stability as their gauge?

I have left higher paying roles because I couldn’t stand the place, or because I didn’t get support. I don’t know if he liked LV or not but he seemed to have a lot of support.

Except he was offered $4M here so not exactly pennies. Sometimes the grass isn’t always greener. I made good money with GE in the early 2K’s and was offered options during the dot com boom that could potentially be worth 7 figures. I didn’t take it because I didn’t like that they forced you to put all your retirement in their stock (among other lesser reasons). A year later Enron went out of business. Odom just took the Enron job. If you are making good money chasing the latest $ can be short sighted.

He may not do well but to be fair people probably thought going to UNLV was career suicide.

Consider yourself lucky that your wife didn't make you go to see Wicked. That's a win right there.

Like I said, I think he’ll end up regretting it. We’re all hurt he left because we bought in to his garbage about building something special.

If the next coach has any success, Odom will be crying about how if he had this or that, he would be better off. Mizzou and Arkansas fans don’t miss Odom, don’t you find that odd?

Harper didn’t look like a happy camper today, but I think he’s moved on and will stick with his criteria of a proven HC because we still need to win conference titles and bowl games. Say whatever you want about Odom but he’s brought zero hardware to unlv, and we need a HC that will win those games that do matter.
