Odom and Purdue

This was going to be inevitable, IMO. Also a smart move by him to strike while the irons hot.

I’m grateful for the two years he gave us, and the success he had. Wish him the best of luck.

Weill, if true and I have no reason to doubt it isn’t. It was fun while it lasted.

Unfortunately for us, this is the perfect situation for coach. It will be a huge pay jump. It's BIG 10. Purdue currently sucks so there is room to grow without needing immediate huge success. Their current recruiting class is awful so he won't lose out on recruits who leave when he comes in and he has a good chance to improve through the Portal. He's 4.5 hour drive from Missouri.

Now the question becomes who is our next coach? I think Odom's success should give us access to coaches who want to come in and repeat his success. At least they know it can be done. They know this can be a path to future glory. Let's see harper work his magic. No Coordinators.

So all of his #OurTownOurTeam bullshit goes out the window, hmm? Maybe I’m old but there’s something to be said for loyalty. He ain’t no Tark, that’s for sure.
You can't blame a G5 coach for taking a Big 10 job. If he is really good he can get to a National Championship. He would have a chance to be one of the best coaches in history.

He can love us and at the same time know his future is somewhere else.

There’s no loyalty anymore. Hasn’t been in awhile.

Very tough to find. Players or coaches.

It’s one reason why I advocate former players from glory years. The potential for them to stay, build, and maintain is higher - plus they have elements from the glory years, what it takes, what it means …. UNLV cannot compete with the money of others, so if we want to hold somebody, chances are much better if they have a strong pride/connection.

I get it but…This isn’t like Penn State or Michigan or Ohio State. They are a bottom tier Big 10 school, and if he ever sniffs the CFP with them, I would be just as shocked as what he did here at UNLV.

Well, Purdue fired their last coach after 2 seasons, so I’d say the window for Barry to turn the program around has a very small window.

Glory years. Those guys would be pushing 70 years old.

It's better for him that Purdue is down. Less pressure. More satisfaction when they go up.

Yep you’re talking to the guy who wanted to give CDR a longer leash for just that particular aspect.

This is a ridiculous take.

The scale of the job, the notoriety, the upgrade it brings from a presence, and the likely financials.... I mean, why wouldn't he just stay an assistant coach at Ada HS in Oklahoma forever, that would be loyalty...

Yes, for me that absolutely came into play. 100%.

He could recruit very well, get the level of talented needed here.

He won big games.

Had us nationally recognized and discussed.

And he would have been a lifer, he bled UNLV through and through and would have never considered leaving for a much bigger job … the school, the past, the town meant way too much to him and he wasn’t a money driven, need the limelight type of guy.

That’s a big part of why I had more rope. He had loyalty and showed potential.

Don’t get me wrong, the bad losses were really bad, but not nearly as bad as what we see now … and he should have been with a hot seat … and there were other flaws … recruiting was good in terms of talent, but there’s also effective recruiting … chemistry … attitudes … motivations … you can’t disregard those things because talent is there … and effective recruiting, you need a strong point guard and we never got that.

But those things can be fixed, imo.

But maybe what was worst … he’s a genuinely good guy, good human being … and he was crapped on by boosters and UNLV, sabotaged (recruiting) by our own flesh and blood (boosters) … and that’s just jacked up.

I understand the money, the better conference, the notoriety, all of that.

I’m just disappointed that the guy’s posting #OurTownOurTeam two weeks ago, and taking Purdue’s money like our money isn’t green too. Just not enough of it apparently.

A guy like Tark sure was special. That’s all I’m saying.

That's not how big P4 jobs work. It's why there's a lot of turnover at the mid-level P4 programs. They hire coaches with unrealistic expectations for winning. There's a lot of pressure to win, especially when your hire comes with big promises to boosters and NIL donors

Yeah Tark was special … but there were other special coaches at the time, too. Agree Tark was more special because he was at the very top … but loyalty was an actual practiced virtue decades back …. By many … it’s just not present anymore. So I’m more inclined to “blame” the times, not the person.

Indiana's success this year actually made the Purdue job look a lot better.
I mean Barry took out job a place where. Oone could win. So taking over a long down program doesn't deter him obviously

Indiana’s turnaround is a mirage. They will not be too 4 in Big10 next year.

Seems to me its either Vegas life style or the $ was nowhere near the Purdue level or both. That played in Otz factor on top of other things.

Purdue’s schedule next season is a lot harder than Indiana’s was this season. He’s not winning at Notre Dame, at Michigan, or at home against Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, and USC (ok, maybe USC).

lol don’t hate the player, hate the game. College sports have changed drastically since 1992 and so has UNLV as far as falling behind and being in a shit conference not being able to compete dollar wise against the P4. It’s not even in the same realm as when Tark was coaching. Just be grateful for what he’s done and what the foundation he’s laid. This was almost a guarantee that he was going to be poached, the only question was going to be when not if.

This occured over past weeks. More money was offered. This isnt something that just happened. Contact from Purdue has been there. He knew about this pre Boise game, and even more enlightening, pre his son commiting to UNLV. Which was purely an optics move.
Does his son stay here and try to compete or leave, does he really have the ability to play in the big ten?

Who cares?

They are full of shit. Chase the bag, be a loser in the BigTen. Odom was crying about being fired by Mizzou last week and then does this. He’s chasing the bag. Not a legacy. That’s fine, but you look at Mizzou, they have done A LOT better since they fired Odom and he’s been crying about it ever since.
