Maiava in portal...

And last week they all said they were coming back so that must've been one interesting post game flight/end of year meeting... What P4 job is he going to go to? There's not a lot of immediate openings

This was my point when we had this discussion before.

He's good. I'm not sure he's a huge upgrade at a lot of P4 schools good. At least not yet.

I’d rather have him. Familiarity with the offense, his receivers.

Don’t like that he can’t run well. I thought his reads were spotty much of the year but he was a freshman and it’s a new system … but I know his IQ was questionable from the start, it wasn’t his arm keeping him from beating out Doug. It was lack of recognition/poor reads. And we saw that during the year. That said, he performed far better than I think everyone expected and it was the primary reason for UNLV as an overall surprise.

Just don’t fall in love with players. They’re year to year rentals.

He was loose with the ball all season. He just got away with it vs lesser competition.

No sour grapes. I think he was good enough to become the best QB in conference possibly.

I also think he may not ever evolve beyond what he is now, and always be a guy that puts the ball into some bad spots..Hr's also doesn't have the greatest feel for the pocket. Can't count the number of times he scrambled into pressure instead of away from it.

DCs start to pick up on tendencies. He's got some stuff he has to clean up. Somebody else's project now..

Those are his brothers though...

Well..

Until they aren't..
There was a story a week ago in the Sun, maybe before the bowl game. In the story, his teammates were blowing up his phone, JM is telling them it’s all bunk that he’s entering the portal.

Few days later, here we are. Between that and how Lobby was treated, Brian Odom posting a cringe photo tweet with JM.

I’ll say this, the whole thing was very weirdly handled for a month now.

Washington State and Oregon state are possibilities. Boise and maybe SDSU, but SDSU already got their FSU transfer. Oregon State has like 31 QBs coming in. Hawaii would be out of left field.

Anybody feel like he makes Boise that much better?

SDSU?.Yeah QB situation has been a mess. So maybe.

OSU and WSU? Sure I guess since the incumbents left. Wouldn't have gotten a sniff at starting either place otherwise.

Hawaii..Family. Otherwise why?

Of course. I know youre smarter than that. But question still stands lol how much would you pay for him?

So we all know the College football bag men have always existed. Not going away.

What I'm starting to wonder is how tangible is this NIL money.

Here's why.

Say rumors swirl thar player X was offered 300k in NIL money/endorsements.

Sure Caleb Williams got a Dr Pepper spot. Probably got a nice chunk for that. But who else?

Let's be honest. Dudes this age are prone to get involved in some dumbassery on occasion. Hand those same dudes 300k dollars, the potential for dumbassery probably increases quite a bit.

Yet we aren't seeing (at least I haven't) Tik Tok or Twitter videos of guys flashing cash or showing off new cars or jewelry or videos of them tossing money in the air at clubs.

There was the Colorado thing and stolen jewelry. And Sander's kid with his car, but his dad already had money..

I'm just starting to wonder how tangible this money really is?

A few Texas A&M guys came out and said they didn't see a dime and transferred..

We know guys are getting leases for cars and what not.

But actual hard cash?

So, in general, the way modern college football works I'm never surprised or hurt if a guy hits the portal, especially if I think they're at a talent level where they're not going to be playing on Sundays and the can make some coin while doing it. That's just capitalism But I don't like it when someone says something, and then was clearly using that statement just as a lever to get a better deal and changes their tune. I guess that's sort of capitalism, too but I value my word too strongly to say something publicly then change my position due to self-interest. But the kid didn't just lie to me, he lied to his teammates and the coaching staff. He gave his word, appeared in social media giving his word, etc, then reneged. Had he just said, "I'm still considering my options but I'm leaning towards staying," then I'd have no beef.

But I do kind of have beef now and I hope he's happy where he goes, but I'm glad it's not here anymore.

This is why I’m souring on college sports. Feel good story like JM, Liberty HS, leads UNLV to one of its best seasons, fans and the community are 100% behind him, and it just doesn’t f’n matter. Put yourself out there for a better offer. Zero loyalty, zero consideration for anyone but yourself. Yes I get it, it’s a business now, and that’s exactly why it’s gotten worse. Hell at least in the pros you can lock a player in by contract. Fans have more consistency in pro sports than college nowadays. Coaches are more long term than players. Horrible system.
I didn't watch either game last night since the only connection I have to college sports is UNLV.

Washington and Michigan were the only two futures bets I made during the season so it would have been stressful to watch if both lost. Now, I don't need to watch the title game since I don't need to hedge.

I bet Michigan/WA to play in the title game so that was my only reason for watching. That said, I am glad I did as both games were entertaining for a change.

I agree with that with one exception. For me the best part of CFB is what happens before and after kickoff. The game is secondary. I traveled to 6 Oregon games this year and one random Iowa vs Northwestern game. Last year I went to a lot of Oregon games and Alabama vs Auburn, it’s what I do every year.

Regardless of who is playing in these games and how much they are getting paid, there is nothing like arriving to Eugene or some other college town on Friday, walking around the campus, bar hopping with fans of both schools, tailgating before the game. Or taking a boat to Husky stadium as I did for the 6 seasons that I had season tickets when I lived there and still do at least every other year. That is what separates college football from the NFL.

The JM/Marion relationship always seemed forced to me. It’s been noted on this board that JM was not BM’s QB. If true I suspect once BM was returning JM was no longer interested in staying. If that’s the case then BM needs to live up to his word and not bolt to another school in Feb and take his replacement for JM with him. Worst case scenario imo so a lot rides on BM not doing what he’s done at every other school. He needs to live up to his second year commitment AND bring “his” QB to run his offense. I’d rather not have a QB that doesn’t want to be here but I also have eyes wide open to the fact that it’s not easy to simply plug in a new QB with “potential” and expect him to perform same or better than JM. I would have preferred stability and consistency with upgrades on defense and a portal QB to compete and push JM, but here we are (thank you NIL). Lot rides on Marion now to produce his QB and exceed what JM was able to accomplish.
BTW, could this at all effect White’s commitment to stay?

Agreed. The college game experience exceeds the NFL. To me the difference is the loyalty fans have to their alma mater. That loyalty extended to the players and their commitment to the institution. I wonder whether the complete destruction of player loyalty will erode the college experience over time. Players are purely rentals now. It used to be we could watch the players grow in the program over 4 years. Now we’re rooting for the school knowing the players are 100% replaceable. Just seems a bit more shallow, a bit more empty. Perhaps it would be better if NIL evolved into more of a pro-like contract? Minimum two year required commitment for any freshman with years 3 & 4 negotiable based upon NIL amount. Give the schools a bit more leverage in the negotiation and would provide more stability to the game and college experience.

I was told I was dumb and didn't know anything for saying I wanted a portal QB lmao
I’ve learned that no matter what side of an issue you take, you‘ll be called dumb by someone out there. No matter how logical it may seem….on the topic at hand, just goes to show how much of a mess CFB is currently. There really is no logical reason for him to hit the portal, especially at this point, other than the fact that he can and maybe offered some more money. This is free agency without contracts. Just wild.

Your first point is spot on.

He was offered money and him and Marion dont get along as much as an OC and QB should. The latter is probably the easiest thing to see on tv. BUT, I believe the main issue is that Maiva was just not his pick. Marion didnt recruit him. Cant fault either of them.

He was going to transfer, it leaked, and it was an easy cover up and damage control because the other Maiava also entered the portal. Now here we are.

Ding ding ding. I say we make a run at JDL too. Those are my top 2.
Any word on what Arch Manning is going to do? Not that UNLV has a shot, but just wondering what his thought process is if Ewers returns. I would think that those NIL dollars would drop significantly for him if he's going to be the back up at UT again next year. Though I have not idea what the terms of his agreement were.

If Ewers returns Arch isn't staying at Texas. I'm surprised he actually stayed as the 3rd string.
